Chapter 207 Cannot Save

"Why are you being so stupid?" Emma's tears streamed down her face. Despite the anger she felt towards George, he was her only support right now. "Why did you do this?"

"Because I can't let you get hurt," George's voice was steady, even though he was in excruciating pain. He refused to back down. His hand gripped Emma's tightly, shielding her.

"Get down, quick!" he suddenly whispered, realizing the frequency of falling rocks above was increasing. They needed to find cover fast.

Without hesitation, Emma immediately lay down next to George, her body pressed against his.

With a loud crash, more debris fell around them, making a dull thud. George used all his strength to shield Emma, his body slightly bent, taking the brunt of the impact.

Emma said with concern, "George, you're hurt!"

"It's nothing; I'll be fine." George managed a faint smile, wiping the tears from Emma's face.

Outside the pit, Olivia paced anxiously at the edge, turning to Jerry beside her. "We have to get George out of there! Why did he have to jump in to save Isabella?"

"We can't save him!" Jerry sneered coldly. "You're so naive, Olivia. If George survives, he'll come after us. He knows what we've done and won't let us off the hook!"

"But he's part of the Russell family!" Olivia retorted angrily. "We can't just let him die! If he dies, Anna will be implicated too!"

"No, she won't." Jerry's voice dripped with disdain. "In fact, his death would be better for Anna. Think about it, Anna is Lucas's mother, and Lucas is the sole heir of the Russell family. If George is alive, there will be countless illegitimate children in the future. But if he dies, all the inheritance goes to Lucas. And what's Lucas's is Anna's. Then we can arrange for Lucas to die, and the entire Russell family fortune will be ours!"

"I don't care! I just know he's in there, and we have to save him!" Olivia's voice grew more agitated.

"Save him? Have you thought about the consequences?" Jerry's tone turned icy. "If he lives, Anna will always be at risk of being exposed. Can you guarantee George will be fooled forever? Besides, his attitude towards Anna is getting worse. Who knows what will happen in the future? Instead of gambling on an uncertain future, it's better to kill him now! Only then will we be safe."

Olivia hesitated, Jerry's words stirring turmoil in her heart.

She paused, if George lived, he would indeed be a threat to them.

But, this was George, the highest-ranking person in Lakeside Haven!

They were going to kill George!

How could they dare!

"If you insist on saving him, don't blame me for being ruthless!" Jerry's voice carried a threat.

Olivia's resolve wavered. Though she didn't want to admit it, she knew Jerry made sense.

If George lived, their situation would become more dangerous, and their plot to kill Isabella would be exposed, implicating Anna.

"I just want Anna to be okay," Olivia's voice softened, filled with inner conflict.

"If you want Anna to be okay, then George must die! Only his death can ensure Anna's lifelong wealth and prosperity." Jerry's voice was as cold as a blade, merciless.

Fear gripped Olivia's heart. Ultimately, her reason overcame her emotions.

She nodded slowly. "Alright, I understand. We'll make sure he dies."

A cold smile curled Jerry's lips. "That's more like it."

"So, what do we do?" Olivia asked anxiously.

Jerry remained calm and sinister. "We need to make him believe we're rescuing him."

"But what if he doesn't die?" Olivia felt uneasy, despite her decision to side with Jerry, her inner struggle persisted.

"Don't worry." Jerry's smile was chilling. "As long as we render him completely helpless, we can climb down and finish him off ourselves, then bury him. Isn't he fond of Emma now? Let them be buried together."

Olivia's heart tightened. Though she didn't want to admit it, she knew Jerry's plan was the only way out. She took a deep breath and nodded. "Alright, let's start."

They began to feign activity, with Olivia shouting loudly at the pit's edge. "Mr. Russell! We're here to save you! Hold on!"

Meanwhile, Jerry quietly picked up a large rock, preparing to throw it down. Olivia's heart was filled with conflict, but she knew there was no turning back.

"Mr. Russell! We're here!" Olivia continued to shout, trying to mask her fear.

"Ready!" Jerry whispered, hurling the rock down with force, aiming for the pit.

George heard the commotion above and tensed, realizing the danger. He quickly turned, trying to shield Emma with his body.

"Get out of the way!" he shouted, but it was too late. The rock struck his head with a heavy thud.

"George!" Emma cried out, watching he get hit. She couldn't help but admire Olivia and Jerry's ruthlessness.

"It's okay; I'm fine." George forced a reassuring smile, but blood was already seeping from his head, his face growing pale.

"Does it hurt?" Emma's tears welled up, though she didn't truly feel much sympathy.

Emma thought to herself, 'I hurt more than you ever did. Enjoy the pain.'

Blood trickled down George's forehead, his consciousness fading. He finally collapsed. The surrounding darkness seemed to swallow his awareness, leaving only the sound of his heavy heartbeat.

"Sorry, Isabella, I broke my promise. I can't protect you anymore." These were George's last words before losing consciousness.

Emma smirked where he couldn't see and thought, 'George, how many promises have you broken? I'm used to it by now.'

With George unconscious, what would Olivia and Jerry do next?

Emma couldn't wait to find out.
