Chapter 399 Contradiction

Phoenix was relentless, her smile unwavering but her tone growing firmer. "You worried about me? I'm Charles's daughter-in-law; it's my job to take care of him. Besides, you've been busting your butt, isn't it only fair I pitch in?" As she spoke, she reached out to grab the bowl.

Emma's heart tightened, but she kept her face calm. "Mom, really, there's no need. Grandpa's diet needs special attention, and I can handle it. If you want to help, maybe you could check the kitchen to see if anything else needs prepping?"

She deftly sidestepped, avoiding Phoenix's hand.

Phoenix's smile vanished instantly, her tone turning sharp. "Emma, are you disrespecting me? I'm your elder, why shouldn't I take care of Charles? You think I'd harm him?"

Emma understood her intentions but didn't want to confront her now.

Taking a deep breath, she tried to keep her voice steady. "Mom, you've got it wrong. I just think it's safer if I handle Grandpa's meals. I appreciate your willingness to help, but let me do the feeding."

Phoenix continued, "Emma, how dare you! I'm feeding Charles today, and if you try to stop me, don't blame me for being rude!"

Her rough movements nearly spilled the soup.

Seeing this, Emma knew that insisting further would only make things worse.

She bit her lip and finally let go, her tone tinged with resignation. "Alright, Mom, if you insist, you can feed him."

Phoenix took it triumphantly, her smile returning with a hint of victory. "That's better. Don't worry, I'll take good care of him." She turned to Charles, a cold glint in her eyes.

Emma stood still, watching Phoenix's back, feeling a growing unease.

Phoenix, with a fake smile plastered on her face, slowly approached Charles with the bowl of soup. Her eyes held a trace of contempt, but her voice was overly sweet. "Dad, have some soup; don't stay thirsty."

She roughly pushed the bowl towards Charles's mouth, causing the soup to spill onto her clothes.

Phoenix's anger flared instantly, her voice piercing, her eyes blazing with fury. "You useless old man, can't even drink soup properly? You've ruined my limited edition dress! Can you afford to replace it?"

She raised her hand, ready to strike Charles in a fit of rage, her expression twisted with anger.

Emma rushed forward, standing between Charles and Phoenix, her voice trembling with desperation. "Mom, please, don't hit Grandpa! He didn't mean to, and he's old and slow, please don't be angry with him."

Phoenix sneered, her eyes filled with disdain. "Emma, you think your pleading will work? I'm going to teach this old man a lesson today! But..."

Her tone suddenly changed as she smirked, her eyes glinting with malice. "If you beg me, humbly and until I'm satisfied, I'll spare him. How about it? This is your only chance."

Emma bit her lip, tears welling up in her eyes, looking pitiful and on the verge of breaking down. Her voice was barely audible, trembling. "Mom, please, don't do this, Grandpa really didn't mean it."

Phoenix watched her with satisfaction, confident that Emma would yield. She could already imagine Emma groveling before her, the smile on her face growing deeper.

Afraid that Emma might not submit, Phoenix slammed the bowl onto the table, breaking it in half. She grabbed one piece and slashed Charles's cheek.

Just as she thought Emma would give in.

Emma glanced at the blood on Charles's face, and her expression changed.

The previous weakness vanished without a trace. Her eyes became sharp as knives, fixed on Phoenix. She stood up abruptly, grabbing Phoenix's wrist and twisting it forcefully.

Phoenix screamed in pain, dropping the broken piece, which shattered on the floor.

Her wrist was held in a vice-like grip, her face pale, sweat forming on her forehead. Emma didn't give her a chance to react, pushing her hard, causing Phoenix to stumble and fall heavily to the ground, looking utterly defeated.

"How dare you?" Phoenix's voice was tinged with panic. She hadn't expected Emma to fight back, let alone with such strength. Her wrist burned with pain, her mind a mix of shock and anger, her eyes filled with disbelief.

Emma looked down at her, her tone indifferent. "You want me to grovel before you? Who do you think you are?"

Phoenix was intimidated by her aura, feeling a wave of panic, but she still tried to retaliate, her voice trembling. "Emma, you've finally shown your true colors! I knew you were pretending all along! I'm going to tell George you've been deceiving him! I'll make sure he kicks you out!"

Her voice was sharp, but her confidence was clearly shaken, her eyes betraying her guilt.

At that moment, George's voice came from the doorway. "Emma, what's going on?" His voice carried a hint of confusion and concern, his footsteps approaching.

Phoenix immediately put on a pitiful expression, her voice filled with tears, as if she had suffered a great injustice. "George, thank goodness you're back! Look at this bitch, how dare she hit me! I'm your mother! How can you let her treat me like this?" Her tears flowed freely, her voice full of accusation, making herself seem like the victim.

George entered the room, seeing Emma standing aside and Phoenix on the floor, her face streaked with tears, her clothes stained. His brow furrowed slightly, his voice tinged with worry. "Emma, did she bully you again?"

"No, Mom didn't bully me." Emma lowered her head, her voice carrying a hint of grievance. "I just saw Mom hit Grandpa, and in a moment of panic, I pushed her. I didn't expect her to react like this, I really don't know what to do."

Her voice was barely audible, filled with helplessness.

Phoenix immediately interrupted, her voice sharp, her eyes blazing with anger. "George, don't listen to her lies! How could I harm your grandpa? She's framing me! She's been lying to you all along; she never lost her memory! Don't let her fool you!"

George looked at the broken pieces on the floor, then at Phoenix, his gaze icy. "Why did you hurt Grandpa? Once wasn't enough, now a second time! Mom, this family can no longer tolerate you!"
