Chapter 323 No Divorce
George's hand clenched, his knuckles turning white, but he still didn't defend himself.
"Listen to me, George!" Charles stood up, his cane hitting the floor with a thud, his voice full of anger. "I picked Emma to be your wife. She joined the Russell family, not to be mistreated by you! Even though you divorced three years ago, if you ever make her suffer again, I'll be the first to come after you!"
George looked up, his gaze conflicted as he faced Charles. "Grandpa, I know I messed up."
"Messed up?" Charles sneered, his cane suddenly striking George's leg. "You realize it now? When you married Emma, what did you promise me? You said you'd treat her well, make her happy! Did you do that?"
George didn't dodge, taking the hit head-on. Pain shot through his leg, but he stood straight, a hint of guilt and regret in his eyes.
"Grandpa, I really know I was wrong," George's voice was low but firm. "I'll spend my life making it up to her."
"Make it up?" Charles scoffed. "You think it's that simple? Emma doesn't even want to see you now. How do you plan to make it up to her?"
George was silent for a moment, then looked up, his gaze resolute. "Grandpa, I'll make her believe in me again. I'll prove with my actions that my love for her is genuine."
Charles stared at him for a long time, a complex emotion flashing in his eyes. He sighed, his tone softening slightly. "George, I know you're a smart kid, but feelings can't be handled with intelligence. Emma is a good girl, she's been through too much. If you truly want to make it up to her, show your sincerity."
George nodded, his voice carrying a note of determination. "Grandpa, I will."
Charles looked at him, still angry but more disappointed and helpless. He waved his hand, his tone weary. "Get out of here, and don't let me see you acting like a jerk again! If I find out you've made Emma suffer, the Russell family will disown you!"
George bowed deeply and left the hall. His figure seemed heavy, but his eyes were more determined than ever.
"George!" Charles's voice was old and tired.
George stopped but didn't speak or turn around, just waited quietly.
Charles said, "Sometimes, letting go is the best choice."
"No, I will never let go."
With that, George strode away.
Charles watched his resolute back and sighed heavily.
George's high-profile pursuit had completely disrupted Emma's life. At work and at home, his presence loomed over her constantly. Even the staff started advising her not to refuse him.
"Ms. Taylor, Mr. Russell is so good to you. You could consider giving him a chance." a colleague tentatively asked.
"Yeah, a man like Mr. Russell, rich and devoted, is really rare," another colleague chimed in.
"You don't understand," Emma said impatiently, frowning. "It's over between us."
"But didn't you just have a wedding not long ago? How can it be over? And even if it is, he clearly still loves you," the staff member sighed. "Ms. Taylor, some feelings are gone forever once missed. Are you really not going to give him another chance?"
Emma didn't answer, just lowered her head in silence.
She knew George's persistence and dedication weren't fake, but she could not forget the pain he had caused her before.
Days of entanglement and persuasion had pushed Emma's emotions to the brink of collapse, even affecting her daily life.
That night, she returned home, sat on the couch, and stared at her phone screen. George's number was still in her contacts, but she hadn't called him in a long time.
She took a deep breath and dialed that familiar number.
The call was quickly answered, George's voice on the other end filled with surprise and anticipation.
"Emma?"
"Let's meet tomorrow," Emma's voice was cold and calm. "I have something to say to you."
George was stunned for a moment, then smiled. "Okay, I'll be waiting."
After hanging up, Emma closed her eyes and sighed deeply. She knew this meeting could completely change her relationship with George. Whether starting over or ending it for good, she had to face it.
In a quiet café, the atmosphere was as cold as ice. Emma sat by the window, a sharply dressed lawyer beside her. Her expression was indifferent and distant, her gaze never landing on George across from her.
George sat opposite, his expression dark, his eyes fixed on Emma. His fingers tapped lightly on the table, as if suppressing his emotions.
"George," Emma finally spoke, her voice devoid of warmth. "I asked you here to make things clear. From now on, I won't see you again. If there's anything, contact my lawyer."
A flicker of pain crossed George's eyes as he furrowed his brow slightly. "Emma, do you really have to go this far?"
Emma didn't answer, turning to the lawyer instead. The lawyer immediately took a document from his briefcase and pushed it towards George.
"Mr. Russell, this is a document Ms. Taylor asked me to draft. She wishes to pursue custody of Lucas through legal means."
George's face turned pale instantly. He grabbed the document, reading it from start to finish in disbelief. "Custody? Emma, you won't even let me keep Lucas?"
Emma finally looked up, her gaze cold. "George, Lucas is my son. I have the right to fight for his custody. You can't give him a warm home. I don't want him growing up in coldness and conflict."
George's fingers tightened around the document, his knuckles white. "Emma, you can hate me, but Lucas is my son. I won't let you take him."
"George, I don't want to argue with you anymore. The lawyer will handle everything. If you have any objections, resolve them through legal channels."
She turned to leave, but George's voice came from behind, filled with a desperate determination. "Emma, you'll always be my wife! No matter where you go, that won’t change!"
Emma paused slightly but didn't turn back, her voice cold. "George, I haven't been your wife for a long time. Your so-called marriage is just a one-sided shackle."
George said firmly, "No, we've always been married."
Emma paused and said, "Three years ago, we signed divorce papers. Did you forget?"
"I didn't forget. But I also remember that those papers have always been with me. I never filed them with the court. So, we've never been divorced!" George replied.
