Chapter 386 Awakening
After conducting the Glasgow Coma Scale evaluation, the doctor frequently mentioned that it was exceedingly rare for someone in a vegetative state to regain consciousness. Thus, Charles's sudden awakening was nothing short of a miracle.
Inside the ambulance, the doctor, initially excited, soon showed signs of shock. He whispered to the nurse beside him, "This is impossible! His EEG showed long-term suppression of cortical activity. How could he suddenly wake up?"
Charles weakly moved his lips, "Water."
Emma carefully used a cotton swab to moisten his lips. "Grandpa, we're in the ambulance. We'll be home soon."
Charles blinked with difficulty, his eyes dazed as if he had just awoken from a long darkness.
The doctor interrupted, "No, in his current condition, you can't go home. Mr. Russell needs to go back to the hospital for a full examination!"
With Emma's agreement, the ambulance turned around and headed back to the hospital.
After a thorough examination, the doctor concluded, "Although he's regained consciousness, the MRI shows extensive brain damage. This kind of partial recovery is extremely rare in medical literature."
Less than thirty minutes later, George arrived. By then, Charles had finished his examination and was moved to a regular monitoring ward.
Exhausted from the ordeal, Charles fell asleep again.
George and Emma stayed by his side, unsure if he would wake up again.
In the softly lit hospital room, they sat across from each other. The faint smell of disinfectant lingered in the air. George gently took Emma's hand, his eyes filled with a complex mix of emotions.
"Emma," he hesitated for a moment, his voice barely more than a sigh, "do you remember our past?"
Emma was slightly taken aback, a hint of confusion in her eyes. "Why are you asking this all of a sudden? Are you worried about something again?"
George took a deep breath. "Do you know you've lost some of your memories?"
"Yes. Mia always mentioned you had killed me once, but I have no recollection of it. You love me so much; how could you possibly harm me?"
Emma was stunned.
She felt George's hand tremble slightly. George gently caressed her face, his touch tender and cautious. "There are things I don't want you to know. I'm afraid that if you regain those memories, it will change how you feel about me. Those memories might make you reevaluate our relationship."
"George," Emma looked at him seriously, her gaze steady, "no matter what memories I've lost, my love for you will never change. Our bond is etched into my very being. Even if my memories are erased, my heart still belongs to you."
A complex emotion flickered in George's eyes, a mix of helplessness and heartache. He gently pulled her into his arms, his movements tender and careful, as if afraid of hurting her. He couldn't bring himself to tell her how terrifying those forgotten memories were. They were the dark times she had endured, the moments he least wanted her to remember.
Outside the room, Michael stood silently at the end of the hallway. Shadows cloaked his figure, making him look like a statue hidden in the dark. His gaze was as deep as a dark pool, his fists clenched tightly, veins bulging. Jealousy twisted inside him and gnawed at his sanity as he watched the two embrace.
"Emma, you will be mine eventually. George, I will make you pay!"
Inside the room, Emma nestled in George's arms, oblivious to the surrounding gloom. George kissed her forehead gently, his eyes filled with both deep affection and a hint of guilt.
The enormous secret he kept could destroy their relationship at any moment.
They stayed by Charles's side all night.
As the first rays of morning sunlight touched Charles's face, he opened his eyes.
George's eyes reddened instantly when he saw him awake. "Grandpa, you're finally awake!"
Charles suddenly grabbed George's hand, his voice extremely weak. "Be careful..." Before he could finish, he started coughing violently.
At that moment, the door to the room opened softly.
Scarlett stood at the entrance, a strange smile on her face. "Dad, you're finally awake."
George looked at Scarlett warily. "Mom, what are you doing here?"
Scarlett walked in slowly, her gaze fixed on Charles. "I heard your grandpa woke up, so I came to see him." Her fingers lightly brushed the medicine bottle on the bedside table, her eyes flickering.
Charles began to struggle violently, pointing at Scarlett, but could only make incoherent sounds.
The room's atmosphere grew tense instantly. George and Emma looked at Scarlett in shock, but she just smiled eerily. "Dad, are you talking nonsense again?"
Charles struggled to breathe, his face growing paler, and soon he slipped back into unconsciousness.
"Grandpa!" Emma cried out.
George immediately pressed the emergency call button, his eyes fixed on Scarlett. "Mom, what is going on?"
Scarlett sneered. "Your grandpa just woke up. His brain function is still unstable, so hallucinations are normal." With that, she turned and left, leaving behind a room full of confusion and unease.
Doctors rushed in to save Charles, but his condition deteriorated rapidly. The doctor looked grave. "It's strange. His brain waves suddenly showed abnormal discharges, as if he's back in a vegetative state."
Emma suddenly remembered something and looked sharply at the medicine bottle on the bedside table.
George took the bottle to a professional for laboratory analysis. The report revealed an almost imperceptible needle hole at the bottom, with traces of benzodiazepine inside. His face turned livid as he said, "Looks like we need to investigate my mother thoroughly."
Meanwhile, Phoenix returned home and took out an old photo frame. In the picture, a woman who looked strikingly similar to her was smiling smugly. Phoenix whispered, "Aunt Scarlett, don't worry. I will fulfill your wish. I will get Charles's inheritance. And Emma, that bitch, I will personally take her down. As for you, stay alive in that basement. I might need you someday."
She then looked out the window, gazing towards Sunterra, as if talking to herself or someone else.
"George, you don't like me and don't want to be near me? Well, soon, I'll be your mother. Let's see how you avoid me then!"
