Chapter 328 True Love
George couldn't find Emma.
He stood by the window, staring out at the steady rain, his phone screen long since gone dark. He had lost count of how many times he had dialed Emma's number, only to be met with silence. Her WhatsApp profile picture remained gray, and every message he sent was marked with a small red exclamation point, as if she had vanished from the world entirely.
"Emma, where are you?" he murmured, his voice heavy with exhaustion and pain.
Since Emma left, George's life had become colorless and dull.
He searched mechanically, trying to numb himself with busyness, but every quiet night, her image would invade his mind. Her every smile and frown were like needles, piercing deep into his heart.
Emma had become an inseparable part of his life. Her departure felt like she had taken a piece of his soul, leaving him incomplete.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed, snapping him back to reality. He glanced down to see a text from an unknown number. His heart raced as he opened the message with trembling fingers.
Emma: [George, I'm waiting for you on Crystal Street.]
Those few words nearly stopped his breath. A flood of thoughts rushed through his mind. She finally wanted to see him? His fingers flew over the screen as he replied: [I'm on my way.]
He grabbed his coat and dashed out the door, forgetting his umbrella. The rain soaked his hair and clothes, but he didn't care. All he could think about was seeing Emma.
George ran through the rain, his heart pounding, every second of waiting an agony. Finally, he reached the shop at 1 Crystal Street, scanning every corner desperately.
But Emma was nowhere to be seen. Instead, he saw a familiar yet unexpected face—Phoenix.
"Phoenix?" George was stunned, his brow furrowing. "What are you doing here? Where's Emma?"
Phoenix looked up, a complicated smile on her face. She stood and walked over to George, speaking softly, "George, I'm sorry. I sent the message."
George's face darkened instantly, a mix of anger and disappointment flashing in his eyes. "Why would you do that? Do you know how worried I was?"
Phoenix lowered her head, her voice choked with emotion. "I just couldn't stand seeing you in so much pain anymore. George, you've been looking for Emma for so long, but she hasn't shown up. She doesn't care about you. Why are you still holding on to her?"
George's fists clenched, his knuckles white. His voice was low and cold. "That's my business, not yours."
"But I love you!" Phoenix suddenly looked up, tears streaming down her face. "George, we've grown up together as childhood friends, always by each other's side. Why can't you see me? Emma's left. She's not coming back!"
A flicker of pain crossed George's eyes, but it was quickly replaced by determination. "Emma is my only one. No matter where she is, I'll find her. Phoenix, I hope you understand, my feelings for you will always be just familial."
Phoenix exclaimed, "George, you'll regret this!"
Phoenix's tears fell as she turned and ran out of the shop. George stood there, watching her leave, feeling nothing. His heart was already full of Emma, leaving no room for anyone else.
George slowly walked to the window, looking out at the still-falling rain, and whispered, "Emma, where are you? No matter where you are, I'll find you."
The sound of the rain gradually drowned out his voice, as if the whole world was sighing at his persistence. George knew his wait might be endless, but he was willing to spend his life searching for the woman who haunted his dreams.
Because Emma was his one true love.
George no longer asked the shop staff, because every time he did, the answer was always the same—Emma was on a business trip and wouldn't be back anytime soon. Where she had gone was a business secret they couldn't disclose.
George returned home, still restless. He picked up his phone and tried calling Emma's number again, only to hear the cold message: "The number you have dialed is currently unavailable."
He decided he couldn't wait any longer. He called Emma's lawyer, Valentin. "This is George. I want to see Emma."
On the other end, Valentin's voice was calm and distant. "Mr. Russell, Ms. Jones has authorized me to handle your divorce proceedings. She doesn't want to see you or have any further contact."
George's heart sank. He tightened his grip on the phone until his knuckles turned white.
"If she doesn't see me, I won't sign."
Valentin was silent for a moment. "Mr. Russell, why drag this out? Ms. Jones wants to end this relationship quickly so you can both move on with your lives."
George's fist slammed into the wall with a dull thud, his voice filled with anger and despair. "I won't give up! No matter where she hides, I'll find her and get answers!"
Valentin said nothing more, only responding coolly, "Mr. Russell, if you have any questions about the divorce agreement, feel free to contact me. As for anything else, I'm afraid I can't help."
After the call ended, George leaned weakly against the wall, his eyes filled with pain and confusion. He couldn't accept that Emma had left so decisively, without even giving him a chance to explain.
He slowly walked to the window, looking out at the still-falling rain, and whispered, "Emma, what are you running from? Why don't you have the courage to face me?"
George immediately reached Joshua on the phone.
"Joshua, I need you to do something for me."
"Yes, sir."
The sound of the rain gradually drowned out George's voice.
George stood on the corner across from the shop at 1 Crystal Street, his eyes fixed on the glass door. He had been there for three days, but still hadn't seen Emma. Joshua reported on the shop's status daily, but the results were always disappointing.
"Mr. Russell, there's still no sign of Ms. Jones today," Joshua whispered.
George's brow furrowed, his fingers tapping the car window unconsciously. "Keep watching. Notify me immediately if there's any movement."
"Yes, sir." Joshua nodded and left.
George's gaze remained on the glass door. He knew Emma would show up eventually. She couldn't hide forever, especially with Lucas in his care.
Since he had taken Lucas from Sophia's house, he personally took Lucas to and from school every day, hoping to draw Emma out. He knew Emma cared most about Lucas and wouldn't let him stay with George for too long.
