Chapter 177 Kidnapping Isabella

Emma turned her head and, by the faint light of the fire, saw the name "Michael" before hearing hurried footsteps outside. They quickly closed the notebook, flicked off the lighter, and hid quietly, holding their breath.

For a moment, the entire underground office fell into an eerie silence.

The footsteps were initially almost imperceptible, like the whispers of a ghost, softly and slowly echoing in the air. Gradually, the footsteps became clearer and more forceful, indicating that someone was stealthily approaching.

Each step sounded like a heavy hammer striking Emma's heart, making her involuntarily tense up. The surrounding air seemed to grow heavier with the footsteps, making it difficult to breathe.

Finally, the footsteps reached the door, followed by a moment of silence, as if the unknown person was observing and listening.

Emma felt her heart pounding too fast. She feared the person outside would hear it, but she couldn't control it and could only hope the person outside wouldn't hear or see them.

Unfortunately, reality was destined to disappoint her.

The old door was suddenly pushed open, and a pale hand and a strong flashlight beam entered first.

The light swept across the room, making everything appear stark under its illumination. The person holding the flashlight slowly walked into the room, and by the light, Emma saw his face.

She didn't recognize this person; he wasn't one of the two kidnappers who had abducted her.

She had another thought and looked at Elizabeth. Sure enough, Elizabeth's face was full of fear, and her body was trembling slightly as she looked at the man.

Emma quickly hugged Elizabeth to prevent her from making any noise.

Emma had a sense that Elizabeth's situation was more dangerous than hers. Her danger came from Anna's jealousy. At most, Anna would have someone rape her, and then show the video to George to make him hate her.

To be honest, she certainly wanted to maintain her purity and avoid being raped, but such things were insignificant compared to life. Moreover, George was also one of her targets for revenge.

She could totally tell George was catching feelings for her. So, if she ran into trouble, he'd regret not having her back, but he wouldn't hate her. That was just his way of loving someone.

When George fell for someone, he'd forgive all their mistakes. Even if she went against the whole world, he'd be right there with her.

Even if George ended up hating her for this, Emma wouldn't care. She'd just keep going with her plans, finding another way to get back at him. So, Emma wasn't too worried about getting kidnapped this time.

But Elizabeth? That was a whole different story. Her kidnapping made no sense, and whoever took her clearly wanted her dead. Emma stepping in had changed Elizabeth's fate.

If Emma got stuck in this abandoned building by accident, Elizabeth's kidnapping was on purpose. The person who locked her here seemed to know the secrets of this place, and Elizabeth seemed to know something too.

What was this place hiding?

Why did Michael's name pop up?

Why did the person in the photo look just like him?

Emma had a million questions swirling in her head, but she couldn't think straight. Right now, she just had one wish: not to get caught.

Emma and Elizabeth covered each other's mouths, pressing against the wall, not daring to move. They watched as the flashlight beam swept through the room like a searchlight. They curled up as much as possible.

At the last second, they spotted a panel above the door. They climbed up there with difficulty. It was a blind spot, but also super risky. If the person had looked up, he would've seen them.

The person checked the office for a long time before finally leaving.

As the footsteps faded away, they finally breathed a sigh of relief and crawled out of their hiding spot.

Thank goodness he didn't look up.

Cold sweat broke out on Emma's forehead. They were scared. Elizabeth mustered the courage to ask, "Is he gone?"

Elizabeth's voice was so hoarse, it was almost unrecognizable. Emma was startled by it and listened carefully for a while.

"He should be gone. We're safe."

Only then did Emma realize her own voice was also really hoarse, especially in this dark basement, which was super creepy.

"Let's find a way out and see if we can leave!"

"Okay." Emma lit the lighter to check out their surroundings, but just then, the lighter ran out of fuel and went out, plunging the windowless basement into complete darkness.

"Elizabeth, you still there?"

"I'm here." Elizabeth's voice was trembling. Emma tried to reignite the lighter, but no matter how hard she tried, it only produced a few weak sparks without a flame.

'We're screwed,' Emma thought.

She couldn't even tell which way was which now. Even if she wanted to go back the way they came, she couldn't. The scariest part was that there might be a dangerous person hiding in this unknown place.

Footsteps echoed again; the guy was back. Emma was trying to figure out what to do when she thought she heard a man's laughter right in her ear.

Even though she couldn't see a thing, Emma turned her head, hoping to catch a glimpse of who was laughing. But no matter which way she turned, it was all pitch black.

Then, she felt something wet and warm on her neck, like someone was breathing on it. Emma's whole body went rigid, and she instinctively moved a few steps to the side.

A loud crash echoed as she bumped into a desk.

The violent collision made the wooden desk scrape against the floor with a harsh sound, followed by Elizabeth's scream.
