Chapter 314 Birthday

"I know who he is; you don't need to tell me," Emma snapped, cutting off Sophia mid-sentence. She was really irritated.

Even though Sophia had once saved her, even though Sophia had now turned over a new leaf, Emma could never forget the wrongs Sophia had done to her.

She despised Sophia, but what she despised even more was her own weakness and helplessness.

Sophia just had to cry a little, say a few words of apology, and she actually softened! She actually wanted to forgive Sophia!

No way!

She could never forgive her, she couldn't betray the version of herself that had suffered.

Sophia looked at Emma in shock. "You already know?"

Did she that Lucas was her biological child?

Emma had no idea what Sophia was so shocked about; she just thought Sophia's words were strange. "I've known for a long time."

She knew Lucas was the child of George's once-beloved Anna, the heir to the Russell family! Although Emma had always liked Lucas, at this moment, her longing for her own child overshadowed her affection for Lucas. Intense jealousy consumed her every emotion.

She had lived a life of goodness, but her child's fate was uncertain.

Anna had done so many wrong things, yet her child was loved by everyone. Even Emma, Anna's enemy, couldn't help but like Lucas.

Why did her child deserve to suffer because of her?

She wouldn't allow it!

Emma closed her eyes, overwhelmed by her emotions, and didn't want to see Lucas for the time being. She felt that her affection for Lucas was a betrayal of her own child, whom she had never met.

Lucas didn't know what Emma was thinking, but children were incredibly sensitive. Because of his past experiences, Lucas was even more sensitive.

Almost at the same time, he sensed Emma's coldness towards him and confused.

Did Isabella, like Anna, not like him anymore?

It must be because he did something wrong, made Isabella unhappy, so she didn't want to see him. He had heard from his classmates that gifts played a big role in making a girl happy.

So he carefully took out a delicate little box from his pocket, nervously saying, "Mom, I made this self-defense tool especially for you! Your safety is the most important thing when you go to and from work alone, so you have to take this!"

Emma was a bit surprised as she took the box and opened it. Inside was a small, beautifully designed pepper spray, both aesthetically pleasing and practical. It didn't have any obvious branding, looking like it was handmade.

She looked up at Lucas, incredulous. "Lucas, did you make this yourself?"

Lucas nodded, his face full of pride. "Yeah! I researched for a long time to make it, and it's perfect for women to use. Mom, you have to carry it with you, so I can be at ease."

Emma gently stroked the pepper spray in her hand, a wave of warmth rising in her heart. She examined the small device closely, realizing it wasn't just an ordinary spray but was filled with high-tech elements.

Lucas truly was a little genius, able to create something like this at such a young age.

Anna was really lucky to have such a wonderful child, how could she not be jealous?

She asked for nothing more than that her child was still alive.

Lucas saw Emma looking at the spray without saying anything, thinking she was curious, so he eagerly explained, "Mom, this pepper spray isn't just any old spray! I made it using 3D printing technology. The shell is made of lightweight and durable titanium alloy, and the surface is coated with a non-slip material, making it super comfortable to hold."

"Also, this spray has built-in micro sensors and a smart chip that can automatically detect the surrounding environment. If there's danger, it will emit a high-frequency alarm sound and release a strong pepper spray to incapacitate the bad guy instantly."

"Mom, let me show you how to activate it." Lucas pointed to a small button on top of the spray. "It has a fingerprint recognition system, only your fingerprint can activate it. This way, you don't have to worry about it being misused by others. And it also has a hidden GPS tracking feature. If you're in danger, press the button, and it will automatically send your location to Dad's phone, so he can come to your rescue immediately!"

Emma felt a surge of emotion as she listened. This gift must have taken Lucas a lot of effort; he genuinely cared for her. She couldn't let Lucas's kindness go unappreciated. Emma gently stroked the spray, her voice soft. "Lucas, you put so much thought into this."

But since she was leaving, she didn't want to owe Lucas anything.

"I really like this gift, so Lucas, if there's anything you want, I can give you a gift in return, to repay you for this one." Emma was already trying to distance herself from Lucas.

Lucas, still immersed in the joy of giving a gift, didn't catch the meaning behind her words.

Sophia, however, heard it clearly. Her eyes filled with tears, but she didn't cry out loud, letting the tears silently fall. The large teardrops landed on Lucas's chubby little hand.

Lucas initially thought it was raining and didn't pay much attention. When he looked up, he saw Sophia's tear-streaked face.

"Grandma, why are you crying?" he stood on tiptoe, trying to wipe Sophia's tears.

"I'm fine, just got something in my eye." Sophia made up an excuse.

Lucas, though smart, was still young. He looked at the motionless tree branches by the roadside and scratched his head. "Was there wind just now?"

Lucas didn't dwell on the question. He earnestly advised Sophia, "Grandma, when it's windy, you have to squint your eyes so the dust won't get in. And don't rub your eyes with your hands, there are germs!"

"Okay, I won't move; I'll listen to you." Sophia squatted down, hugging Lucas tightly. This intimate interaction once again pained Emma.

Even though Anna wasn't her biological daughter, Sophia couldn't bear to be separated from Anna's child.

Anna's charm was truly immense!

Emma felt completely out of place. Sensing this, Mia, who didn't want Emma to be hurt by these family scenes, gently guided her away. Mia had no love for Lucas and despised anything connected to Anna.

Lucas, having just comforted Sophia, saw Emma's departing figure and anxiously shouted, "Mom, tomorrow is my birthday..."

Lucas said more, but Emma, already inside the bar, didn't hear it all.

But she had made up her mind to give Lucas a birthday gift, as a return for his.
