Chapter 279 Rendezvous
The night was cool and serene, with two figures huddled together, making the evening feel tender. But someone had to ruin the moment.
George's phone rang again.
He was about to hang up, but then he saw it was Joshua calling, so he quickly answered. His expression became increasingly somber, eventually turning into a serious frown.
"Alright, I'll be there right away."
"What's wrong?" Emma asked, concern etched on her face.
"There's an issue at the company," George replied, his voice tense.
"Is it serious? Should I come with you?"
George was about to refuse, but then he remembered how Isabella had been bullied earlier because he hadn't kept her by his side. This time, he wasn't going to let her out of his sight.
"Okay, you can come with me."
When they arrived at the Russell Group, Joshua immediately pulled George aside.
In three days, the Russell Group would set to participate in a crucial bid, competing against an influential family from Aetheris.
Among the companies competing in Lakeside Haven, the Russell Group was the strongest, with a local advantage over the Aetheris enterprises.
Originally, the Russell Group had the upper hand, but in recent days, the company had been facing frequent issues. Joshua suspected there was a spy within the company, so he called a meeting with all the top executives to catch the mole.
Emma couldn't attend the meeting, so she was placed in a high-end café on the 18th floor.
The café was softly lit, with the aroma of coffee filling the air. A few customers were quietly chatting, and the occasional hum of the coffee machine could be heard. Emma found a spot in a corner by the window.
She looked around to make sure no one was paying attention to her. The café staff were busy and focused, seemingly oblivious to everything around them. Emma's gaze fell on a young female employee, who was busy preparing drinks for customers, occasionally glancing around the shop.
Emma noticed the crystal hairpin in the girl's hair, recognizing her as the contact for today. She decided to approach her at the right moment.
Time ticked by, and Emma took out her phone, pretending to check messages while actually observing the young employee.
Finally, the employee found a moment to walk over to Emma's table, smiling slightly. "Can I get you anything?"
"I'd like a latte," Emma replied with a smile.
"Sure, just a moment." The employee nodded and turned to prepare the drink.
A few minutes later, the employee returned with the coffee, speaking softly, "Here's your latte." She placed the coffee on the table, along with a small note. "This is the detailed plan for tonight, including the time and place."
Emma took the note and quickly scanned it.
"I'll keep George occupied to ensure you can act smoothly." Emma slipped a $100 tip into the waitress's apron.
"Thank you, ma'am. Enjoy your coffee." The waitress walked away with the tray, and no one knew what had just transpired between them.
It was now 11:50 PM.
The operation was about to begin.
At that moment, the office lights flickered and then the entire building plunged into darkness. The alarm blared loudly in the quiet night, making Emma's heart race. She realized the spy had started their move.
It was time for her to act as well.
As the building lost power, the spy swiftly moved from a hidden corner into George's office. In the darkness, he navigated the space with ease, avoiding the security cameras and quickly heading to the desk with the computer.
'Time is running out,' he thought, quickly turning on the computer and inserting a chip. With the power out, all security systems were down, giving him the perfect opportunity.
His fingers flew over the keyboard, icons flashing on the screen. He knew tonight's goal was to obtain confidential files about the Russell Group's future investments, which would expose the company's shady secrets.
Just as he was about to download the files, he heard hurried footsteps outside.
The spy's heart pounded as he quickly shut down the computer and looked for a place to hide. The office door swung open, and several security guards and employees rushed in, flashlights sweeping the room.
"Check the area for any suspicious individuals," one guard whispered.
The spy held his breath, hiding under the desk, praying they wouldn't find him. In the darkness, he could hear the low murmurs of the people outside, his heartbeat loud in the silence.
Emma was on the other side of the office; it was her turn to step in.
Emma walked to the door, meeting the security guards.
"What happened?" Emma feigned alarm, her voice tinged with unease.
"The alarm went off. We're checking the area," a guard replied, his eyes scanning Emma, noticing her slightly disheveled hair as if she had just woken up.
"Sorry to disturb you, Mrs. Russell."
"Never mind. I've been resting and haven't seen anyone." Emma explained calmly, but the guard remained suspicious.
"An unknown person broke in. For your safety, we need to check the office. Is that okay?" The guard's sharp eyes bore into Emma, ready to suspect her if she refused.
Emma wouldn't refuse. She immediately stepped aside, opening the door wider, pretending to be flustered. "Oh my, that's dangerous. Please, go ahead and check. Thank you for your hard work."
After a thorough search, the guards confirmed there was no one else in the office. They exchanged puzzled looks and decided to leave.
"Looks like a false alarm," one guard said, turning to leave.
"You guys go check other areas," another employee added, following the guards out of the office.
The guards, of course, found no suspicious individuals. As they approached, Emma had opened the door, allowing the spy to quietly slip out the window.
After the guards left, Emma retrieved the chip from the computer. Now, she just needed to get the chip out of the Russell Group building, and the mission would be a success!
As Emma was about to leave the building, she was suddenly enveloped in a warm embrace.
"Where are you going?" George's voice was soft but firm.
"I was about to head home since you hadn't come yet," Emma blinked her tired eyes. George's embrace tightened.
He added, "I'll take you."
Emma asked, "Are you done with work?"
"Nothing is more important than you." George replied.
George drove Emma home, the atmosphere in the car heavy. Emma silently contemplated the next steps of her plan to get the chip out, while George watched her quietly, his heart filled with complex emotions.
