Chapter 17 Prenatal Checkup

Emma hopped out of the car and took a moment. She glanced back, and the moonlight hit Ethan's face just right, making his eyes look all soft and tender.

"Yeah, George knows I'm pregnant," Emma forced a smile as she got out. "Thanks, Ethan. I'll treat you to a meal next time."

Ethan grinned and nodded, "I'll be waiting for that invite, Emma."

"Cool," Emma waved with a smile. She watched Ethan drive off before turning around.

But as soon as she stepped into the villa, a cold hand grabbed her arm and yanked her hard.

Caught off guard, Emma's nose smacked into George's broad chest. His icy voice came from above, "Emma, can't you live without a guy? You're really something else."

Ethan and George were old classmates, two years ahead of Emma.

When Ethan confessed to Emma at graduation, everyone thought they were a thing.

In reality, it wasn't the case, but George was convinced Ethan was Emma's ex.

"Are you that desperate to get back with your ex? Let me tell you, Emma, even if we break up, you won't be with another guy. No one dares to be with a woman I've been with!"

George's words were harsh.

He was really stomping all over her feelings!

"George, just because you're unfaithful doesn't mean I'll cheat like you! You've been the only man I've ever had! Your words insult both of us!"

With that, Emma turned and ran into the house.

George stood there, feeling a sudden emptiness. He watched Emma's figure disappear, his brows furrowing. The moonlight hid his expression.

The next day, Emma got to the office early. No love, but at least she had her career. But when she walked into HR, she got hit with some shocking news.

"Emma, we're terminating your employment," the HR manager said coldly, "News of your theft is all over the internet. We don't tolerate thieves."

"I didn't steal anything!" Emma's voice shook, "This is a misunderstanding. I can prove it!"

"Sorry, that's not our call," the HR manager shook his head, "Pack your things and leave."

Emma felt a wave of helplessness, tears welling up. She left HR, filled with disappointment and anger.

In the following days, Emma sent out resumes but got no interviews. Her mood grew heavier, and life felt suffocating.

Finally, the day of her prenatal checkup came. Emma walked into the OB-GYN department, her heart heavy with worry. She sat in the waiting room, clutching her test results, her mind racing.

Then she saw Anna across the room. Dressed to the nines, Anna had a faint smile that seemed out of place.

"Emma, didn't expect to see you here." Anna greeted with a hint of mockery, "Here alone? How sad."

"None of your business," Emma shot back, her dislike for Anna growing, "Aren't you alone too?"

"Nope," Anna's voice dripped with schadenfreude, "George went to get my test results. I'm waiting for him. Of course, that's a husband's job."
