Chapter 143 The Gift
George took off, but Emma knew he'd be back. Michael showing up made him even more suspicious of who she really was.
Looking exactly alike was already a big deal, and Michael's special treatment of her just made it worse.
If George had any brains, he'd definitely start questioning her. Emma couldn't wait to see what George would do next.
Even though Emma had been trying to push George away with her words, it was all part of her plan to lure him in.
She knew George too well. Once he got fixated on something, no one could change his mind. So as long as George was still suspicious, they'd definitely cross paths again. And with more interactions, she could get her revenge.
The whole showdown took a while. Seraphine was getting antsy on the side.
"Dad, when are we going to the park?" Seraphine asked, pouting.
"Right now," Michael said, ruffling Seraphine's hair, picking her up, and heading to the car.
"Wait, Mom's not in the car yet."
"We'll wait for her in the car," Michael said with a playful wink. Seraphine remembered the surprise they had planned.
"Dad, hurry up! We need to get ready!" Seraphine said, bouncing by the car trunk.
When Emma finished talking to the store clerk and came out, Seraphine couldn't wait to pull Michael's hand and said, "Dad, Mom's here!"
Seraphine and Michael got out of the car. Seraphine jumped out, and Michael followed closely, worried she might fall.
Michael, the big-shot CEO, was just a clumsy dad around Seraphine.
Seraphine asked Michael to lift her up high. Then she covered Emma's eyes and shouted, "Mom, close your eyes!"
Emma was surprised for a moment, then smiled and played along. "Okay, my eyes are closed."
"Dad, you can open it now!" Seraphine shouted excitedly.
Then they heard the trunk open. Seraphine let go, her face full of anticipation.
Emma slowly opened her eyes and saw Michael and Seraphine standing in front of her, the trunk open and brimming with beautifully wrapped gifts. She was instantly moved, a big smile spreading across her face. "You did all this!"
In the trunk, the first thing she saw was a luxurious watch, with a dial inlaid with sparkling crystals and a strap made of soft genuine leather, giving off a faint fragrance. This watch wasn't just stylish; it symbolized every precious moment they had spent together as a family.
Next, Emma saw a beautiful necklace, the chain intricately woven from fine silver, with a dazzling sapphire hanging in the center, like the brightest star in the night sky. This necklace was personally chosen by Seraphine, symbolizing the deep bond between her and Emma.
There was also a delicate handmade wallet, simple yet elegant. Inside, it had multiple card slots and coin pockets, making it both practical and stylish. Emma knew this wallet was specially chosen by Michael, showing his care and concern for her.
"Surprise, Mom!" Seraphine cheered, her eyes sparkling with joy.
"Thank you; I love it so much!" Emma's eyes welled up with tears, her heart overflowing with warmth and happiness. She stepped forward and hugged Seraphine and Michael tightly.
Emma wasn't slow on the uptake. Before she faked her death, she had already sensed Michael's special feelings for her.
That's why he had gone to such lengths for her. Otherwise, with just Ethan, who was kept at home, Mia, an ordinary office worker, and Billy, a doctor, they could only fake her death and whisk her away.
But the subsequent arrangements to smuggle her out of the country and set up the house fire without leaving clues for the fire department were all handled by Michael.
It was no exaggeration to say that Michael gave Emma a second life.
But he never asked for anything in return, not even joking about Emma marrying him. But three years of companionship was real; he gave Emma a new life and fatherly love to Seraphine.
All he wanted was Emma's love. But Emma's heart was filled only with revenge. She wanted everyone who had wronged her to pay the price.
Before completing her revenge plan, Emma had no energy to care about love. Michael understood her, so he always supported her silently without making any excessive demands.
He only said one thing—if Emma wanted to start a new relationship, she should consider him first.
"Michael, thank you."
"You regarded me as an outsider." Michael left a light kiss on Emma's hair. "Let's go; our little princess is getting impatient."
It was evening, and the city's skyline looked particularly beautiful against the sunset. The outlines of skyscrapers became more defined in the golden afterglow, with glass facades reflecting warm light, like sparkling jewels embedded in the sky. On the streets, pedestrians hurried by while the traffic was heavy. The bustling city seemed especially lively in this soft light.
The car was filled with laughter and joy. Seraphine excitedly recounted her school stories from the back seat, while Emma occasionally turned back to smile, her heart filled with happiness.
However, Michael's brow gradually furrowed. He vaguely felt that a black sedan was following them. As the traffic lights changed, the car kept a certain distance, seemingly following them deliberately.
"Emma, do you feel like there's a car following us?" Michael's voice was low, with a hint of caution in his eyes.
Emma turned her head and looked carefully, feeling uneasy. "It seems so. Should we take a different route?"
At that moment, Emma's phone rang, showing a call from Mia.
"Emma, I just noticed someone following me. How about you?" Mia's voice was calm. She had experienced a lot over the years and was used to dangerous situations. Being followed was no big deal. But the timing was a bit coincidental. Emma had just sent Mia a message today, reminding her to be more vigilant, and now she was being followed.
These two things must be related.
