Chapter 139 Provocation

After the anniversary bash, Anna's life went completely off the rails.

Once the darling of high society, she was now the target of everyone's scorn. Her reputation tanked, and her so-called friends vanished. Online vitriol was relentless, an unending barrage of insults reducing her to a fragile shell of herself.

One comment hit her like a punch to the gut: [You don't deserve to exist in this world!]

Clutching her phone with white-knuckled intensity, Anna felt she only had two places she could go. One was The Stuart Villa, where Sophia and Henry always had her back. The other was the entrance of the Russell Villa.

Anna waited outside the Russell Villa for what felt like forever. She wanted to see George, to explain everything and win back his trust. But the silence at the door was like a knife, cutting her heart to shreds.

"How did it come to this..." she whispered to herself.

Just then, her phone rang. It was the hospital calling.

She suddenly remembered Lucas was still on her side. If she took Lucas to see George, George would have to see her. Even if George refused, she'd get into the Russell Villa somehow.

Anna rushed to the hospital. When she got there, she hurried into the ward and saw Lucas lying in bed.

Lucas, under Emma's meticulous care for a few days, looked significantly better. His face, once gaunt, now had a bit of chubbiness, and his pale complexion had some color. He looked like a healthy kid, but this sight only fueled Anna's anger.

A wave of rage surged through her. She stormed over to Lucas, grabbed his hand, and yelled, "Why do you get to lie here comfortably while I'm suffering out there!"

Lucas woke up with a start, his eyes wide with fear and confusion. He trembled, trying to say something, but Anna cut him off, "You go to the Russell Villa right now and beg your dad to see me! If he refuses, you keep begging! Got it?"

Anna's anger only grew. She dragged Lucas out of bed and out of the ward, taking out her frustration on the innocent boy.

"You're her son, so you deserve it!" Anna muttered under her breath, so quietly that only she could hear it.

Instead of heading straight to the Russell Villa, she took Lucas to a small, dark isolation room in the hospital and shut the door.

The room was cold and bare, with just a small window letting in a sliver of light. Lucas curled up in the corner, trembling, Anna's angry words echoing in his ears.

'Why is this happening?' Lucas kept thinking, tears streaming down his face. He clutched his clothes tightly, feeling utterly helpless and alone. The air in the isolation room was thick and suffocating, making him feel like he couldn't breathe.

"I'm so scared..." Lucas whispered to himself. He couldn't wrap his head around why Anna was treating him like this. He wanted to cry out loud, but his voice was stuck in his throat.

In the darkness, Lucas's mind wandered to Isabella. Her smile was like sunshine, always comforting him with her gentle voice and endless care. He remembered her telling him stories, her warm hugs, and felt a deep longing.

'If only Isabella were my mom...' Lucas thought, his eyes filled with a mix of desire and helplessness. He wished he could go back to that warm ward, basking in Isabella's love and care.

"Why can't Mom love me like Isabella does?" Lucas's tears kept flowing.

The door of the isolation room was shut tight, sealing him from the world outside. Panic surged in Lucas's heart. He didn't know how long he'd be locked up or if Anna would come back.

"Isabella, I miss you so much," he whispered, his voice echoing in the isolation room, but no one answered.

As time passed, Lucas's fear grew. A child's nature made him crave Anna's embrace, but his mind told him to reject her. He couldn't understand what was happening. Anna was different from other moms.

Suddenly, a fat rat scurried out of the shadows, heading straight for him. Its eyes gleamed with a cunning look. Lucas's heart sank, and he instinctively backed away, tears streaming down his face as he cried out, "No! Stay away!"

His cries echoed in the isolation room, sounding utterly desperate. The rat didn't care, continuing to approach him, seemingly excited by Lucas's movements. Lucas's voice grew sharper, "Help! Is anyone there!"

Just then, Anna stood at the door of the isolation room, listening to Lucas's cries, a twisted smile forming on her lips. Her heart was filled with satisfaction and pleasure. She enjoyed Lucas's fear, which symbolized her victory over Emma.

"Lucas, cry as loud as you can," she whispered to herself, her eyes gleaming with malice. She waited quietly until Lucas's cries gradually weakened, becoming faint and powerless.

Finally, Anna decided to end it. She opened the door of the isolation room, walked in, and bent down, showing a concerned expression. "Lucas, don't be afraid. I'm here." Her voice was eerily gentle.

Lucas looked up and saw Anna's face. He didn't know her true intentions, but at that moment, he just wanted to escape this terrifying place.

"Let's go to school. You miss your classmates and that bitch Seraphine, don't you? Let's go see them together." Anna smiled eerily, reaching out to pull Lucas up.

Lucas hesitated for a moment but was ultimately drawn by her gentleness, slowly standing up. Despite the lingering unease in his heart, he longed to escape the isolation room and return to the sunlight.
