Chapter 289 Seeing Ghosts

Phoenix had just been hired as George's personal assistant. After finishing up her onboarding paperwork, she headed straight to George's office with her stuff.

The moment she walked in, she spotted Joshua's desk and, without checking if anyone was there, plopped herself down in his chair.

Given her unique status, no one dared to assign her any tasks. So, Phoenix spent her time idly playing on her phone in George's office.

When she got bored, she glanced around. As she approached George's desk, she noticed a photo of Isabella. She scrutinized the picture closely.

The face in the photo was identical to Emma's, which she remembered vividly. She couldn't believe that two complete strangers could look so alike. Could Isabella and Emma really be unrelated? Perhaps they were twin sisters?

Phoenix thought that Emma had died and returned as a ghost, taking on Isabella's form to seek revenge.

She glanced at the large package she had brought, a sly smile forming on her lips. She planned to test Isabella's identity during lunch.

George didn't return to his office all morning. By the time noon rolled around, Phoenix was starving. She had learned from the admin department that Isabella usually ate lunch in the company cafeteria, so she hurried over, her pocket stuffed with ingredients she had carefully prepared for Isabella.

When Phoenix arrived, she saw Emma and George sitting together, sharing a sweet interaction, oblivious to everything around them.

"You did a great job today," George said to Emma, his eyes full of admiration.

"Thank you, George. I'll keep working hard," Emma replied, her face lighting up with a radiant smile.

"This is for you," George said, sliding a large gift box towards Emma. His gentle movements suggested the box wasn't heavy.

"What is it?" Emma asked playfully.

"You'll find out when you open it," George said, gazing deeply into her eyes.

Their intimate interaction caught the attention of their colleagues, who looked on with envy.

Just then, Phoenix walked in. She felt a surge of jealousy and anger when she saw them so close.

"Well, aren't you two cozy," Phoenix said, feigning a casual tone.

"What a coincidence!" Emma asked with a polite smile.

Phoenix didn't want to talk to Emma. She turned to George and asked, "George, can I join you?"

"No, get lost," George replied bluntly.

"George, don't be like that," Emma said, patting George's hand to calm him down. She then turned to Phoenix and said, "Phoenix, why don't you join us?"

"Fine, if you insist," Phoenix said, though she was still seething inside.

Phoenix wanted to say more, but George's stern look made her shut up. She stared intently at Emma's flawless skin, plotting how to make her eat garlic.

Phoenix pulled a head of garlic from her bag and placed it in the center of the table, a sinister smile on her face. "I heard garlic is good for your skin. Want to try some?"

Emma frowned slightly, puzzled by the offer. She didn't like the taste of garlic and declined, "No, thank you."

Phoenix's eyes glimmered with hidden delight. Emma had refused, confirming her suspicion that Emma was a vampire who couldn't eat garlic. She was determined to make Emma eat it and reveal her true nature in front of everyone.

"You have to eat this!" Phoenix said, grabbing Emma's hand and trying to force the garlic into her mouth.

Emma wasn't one to be easily bullied. She broke free from Phoenix's grip and picked up a fork, pressing it against Phoenix's hand.

"What are you doing, Phoenix?" George asked, grabbing Phoenix's hand and shoving the garlic into her mouth. "If you want someone to eat garlic, you try it first."

Phoenix was shocked by the sudden move. With garlic in her mouth, she felt a mix of anger and humiliation. She covered her mouth and ran out of the cafeteria in tears, leaving the other employees stunned.

Watching Phoenix's retreating figure, George frowned deeply. Phoenix had always been clingy as a child, but she had been mentally stable. How had she turned into such a mess after studying abroad at Sunterra for years?

This instability had to be dealt with. She needed to be fired.

But for now, George focused on comforting Emma. "Don't worry; she won't hurt you."

"I'm fine, just didn't expect her to be so aggressive," Emma sighed. She couldn't understand Phoenix's actions. It wasn't exactly harmful, just bizarre.

"I'll handle this," George said firmly. "After lunch, I'll make sure Phoenix is let go."

Returning to his office, George was ready to get back to work. But when he walked in, he found Phoenix sitting at Joshua's desk.

"Phoenix, what are you doing here?" George asked coldly, his tone full of displeasure.

Phoenix looked up with a sycophantic smile. "George, I'm here to work. I'm your personal assistant now. Aren't you happy?"

"That's Joshua's desk. Get out!" George's voice rose.

Phoenix was scared but determined. She had been placed here by Scarlett and had a mission to drive Emma away. Emma was still here, so she had no intention of leaving. "I'm not leaving. This is my desk now. I can do anything anyone else can! George, why don't you believe in me?"

If Joshua were here, he would have been impressed by Phoenix's audacity. She seemed to think being George's assistant was an easy job.
