Chapter 404 Proof
Phoenix panicked instantly.
Emma, that wretched woman, actually had evidence!
But she still refused to back down.
"Just pulling out some random USB drive and calling it evidence? What a joke! Writing a few articles and showing them to the cops, thinking it's proof? You're so naive!"
"Articles I wrote?" Emma raised the USB drive in her hand. "Sorry to burst your bubble, but this has enough to convict you."
"What is it? Surveillance footage?" Phoenix scoffed.
Emma just smiled, and Phoenix's grin froze.
"That's right, it's surveillance footage! I installed cameras in Grandpa's room a while ago. Surprised? Those tiny cameras are pretty effective. I should leave a good review for the seller!"
Phoenix couldn't hear anything Emma said after that.
All she heard was that Emma had installed cameras in Charles's room!
No way!
This footage couldn't be seen by anyone!
Phoenix snapped to her senses and rushed forward, her voice sharp. "Emma, why would you install cameras in Charles's room? What are you up to? Did you plan to kill him all along?"
"Don't you think your logic is ridiculous? I install cameras, record myself harming Grandpa, and then send myself to jail?" Emma retorted.
"Who knows what you're thinking?"
Emma remained calm, her voice steady. "I installed the cameras to ensure Grandpa's safety. He's old and not in good health. As his granddaughter-in-law, it's my responsibility to keep him safe, especially when people around him are eyeing him greedily."
Emma emphasized people around him.
Phoenix felt a pang of guilt but quickly sneered, "Safety? That's a nice way to put it! Who knows if you have ulterior motives? Who installs cameras in someone else's room for no reason? You clearly had a plan!"
"If I hadn't installed the cameras, who would prove my innocence today? Should I just let you frame me?"
Jack chimed in, "Emma, stop making excuses! Your actions are suspicious. Who knows if you're covering up your own crimes with these lies?"
Phoenix suddenly laughed maliciously, her eyes filled with venom. "Emma, did you install the cameras to protect Charles? Or were you spying on him for fun? You're disgusting!"
Emma's face darkened as she said indifferently, "Mom, you need to be responsible for your words. I installed the cameras for Grandpa's safety, not for the vile reasons you're suggesting. Your accusations only make you look guilty."
Phoenix continued, "Guilty? I think you're the guilty one! You're twisted, doing such perverted things!"
"Enough!"
George's eyes blazed with fury. "Say one more word, and I'll have you thrown out!"
Phoenix knew George meant what he said, so she didn't dare speak further.
At that moment, the medical staff brought a laptop as instructed by the police.
Phoenix wanted to stop them, but the police had already inserted the USB drive and started playing the video. Charles's room was clearly visible, and the timestamp showed it was from the night of the incident. Everyone held their breath, staring at the screen.
Suddenly, there was a familiar figure—Phoenix! She looked frantic, holding a rope. She walked to Charles's bed and violently wrapped the rope around his neck, pulling it tight!
The room erupted in shock, everyone staring at the screen in disbelief.
Phoenix's face turned pale, her legs weak, barely able to stand.
She was actually caught on camera, and so clearly!
But she felt a bit relieved. Luckily, before leaving last night, she had washed off her disguise and forgotten to put on her mask again.
So, the person in the video was Phoenix, not her pretending to be Scarlett.
It was a mistake, but it saved her.
Still, she needed to protect Scarlett's reputation.
Phoenix immediately stepped forward and urgently defended herself. "Impossible! This video must be fake! Phoenix is abroad, how could she be here? Emma, you're insane, fabricating this video to clear your name!"
Emma looked at her coldly. "Fake? The time, place, and people in the video are clear. How can you say it's fake? What are you afraid of?"
Phoenix's eyes flickered. She felt Emma had seen through her.
"Stop making excuses! Phoenix is abroad, with an alibi! This video must be a setup!"
Emma sneered, "Seems like Phoenix hasn't hurt you enough, and you're still defending her?"
Phoenix was momentarily speechless but quickly retorted, "Phoenix is my niece. She wasn't intentional, and she must have been coerced! She's already been framed and fled abroad, why won't you let her go? This video must be doctored! With today's technology, who knows if you hired professionals to frame Phoenix?"
Everyone remembered how Scarlett had hated Phoenix just days ago. How could her attitude change so drastically?
Something was definitely wrong!
Did Phoenix offer Scarlett something?
Emma remained calm, "If you suspect the video is doctored, we can have it professionally analyzed. But if the results show it's real, how will you explain?"
Phoenix's face turned pale, but she forced herself to say, "Even if it's real, it could be someone impersonating Phoenix! How can you be sure it's her?"
"Impersonating? The person in the video looks and acts exactly like Phoenix. It couldn't have been anyone else but her. And she's holding a rope, clearly targeting Grandpa. How do you explain that?"
Phoenix was speechless, but she wasn't ready to give up. She turned to George, her voice pleading, "George, do you believe these absurd accusations? Phoenix is your cousin; she wouldn't harm your grandpa! This must be Emma's plot!"
"She hurt me, hurt my child, and now she's hurting Grandpa. Why not?" George turned to her indifferently, "Mom, are you defending Phoenix or yourself? The person in the video is clearly Phoenix, yet you keep making excuses for her. Is her innocence more important than Grandpa's life?"
Phoenix was left speechless, her face flushed with embarrassment. She opened her mouth but didn't know how to respond, only managing to say, "I just don't want to wrong an innocent person. Phoenix wouldn't do this!"
"Innocent? The evidence is clear, yet you keep making excuses for her. What are you hiding? Or do you and Phoenix have some secret?"
