Chapter 478 Going Crazy

The two of them arrived at the intensive care unit.

As they approached the heavy hospital room door, the strong smell of disinfectant filled the air, stinging their nostrils and conveying the heavy atmosphere of suffering within.

George lay on the hospital bed, looking utterly miserable. His face was extremely pale, with visible veins beneath his skin. His lips were severely cracked, with numerous small fissures. His cheeks were deeply sunken, showing the outlines of his bones, and his chin was covered in an untrimmed beard, indicating the suffering he had endured.

His body was connected to numerous tubes extending from his hands to his chest. The heart monitor beside him emitted a faint, rhythmic beep, each sound indicating his fragile state.

Thick bandages wrapped around his right chest, stained with patches of pale white and faint traces of blood seeping through the layers of gauze. Those pale, slightly wrinkled bandages were proof of his battle for love.

Lucas whispered to Emma, "Mom, look, Dad looks so pitiful." His young voice was filled with admiration and heartache.

Emma stared blankly at George, her eyes gradually filling with complex and deep emotions. The ironclad hatred she once held began to slowly melt away.

"Mom, should we go in and see Dad?" Lucas asked worriedly.

"Let's not. We're both fragile right now, and going in would just cause more trouble," Emma said. Lucas thought for a moment and agreed. He was a good kid and didn't want to cause George any more trouble.

Holding Emma's hand, he looked up and adorably replied, "Then let's go back. Mom, you must be tired. How about I get you some water?"

"You little rascal," Emma said, gently tapping Lucas's nose.

Just as Emma and Lucas were about to leave, Phoenix, wearing a Scarlett mask, suddenly charged forward like an enraged lioness, shoving Emma hard. "Emma, how dare you come here!" She slapped Emma's shoulder with such force that it nearly knocked her over.

Emma, already weak, stumbled and almost fell. Lucas, quick on his feet, rushed forward, his small body standing firmly in front of Emma. "You can't treat my mom like that!" he shouted, his voice young but filled with unwavering courage.

Phoenix's eyes were wild with rage, her voice sharp enough to shatter glass. "This woman ruined George, leaving him on this bed between life and death!" She raised her delicate hand, ready to strike Emma, her eyes filled with endless hatred and malice.

Emma noticed Scarlett's wrist.

Could a woman of her age really have such smooth skin, even with good care?

Emma's thoughts were interrupted by Lucas's voice.

"Don't hit my mom!" Lucas hugged Emma tightly, using his small but determined body to shield her. "Mom did nothing wrong! Dad is a hero; he got hurt saving Mom!"

Phoenix trembled with rage, looking like a volcano about to erupt. "You two are jinxes! If George hadn't met you, he wouldn't be lying here!" She raised her hand again, trembling with fury.

Despite his young age, Lucas was exceptionally brave, standing firmly in front of Emma and shouting at Phoenix, "Grandma, you can't treat Mom like this! It's so wrong!"

Phoenix was completely enraged, her eyes bloodshot, her face twisted with anger. "How dare a mere child presume to lecture me?" She raised her hand and slapped Lucas with all her might. Lucas, though trembling with fear, instinctively protected Emma, his young face showing a stubborn defiance.

A loud, crisp slap echoed down the hallway. Lucas staggered back, his face instantly swelling and turning red.

Emma screamed in horror, "Lucas! No!"

Lucas held his cheek, tears welling in his eyes, but he stood firm in front of Emma, his voice shaking but resolute. "Grandma, hitting me is against the law! You're abusing a child! I... I'm going to get security."

Phoenix had lost all reason, screaming hysterically, "Against the law? I'll teach you both a lesson today!" She raised her trembling hand to strike Lucas again.

At the end of the dim hallway, Michael stood silently and smirked. He didn't move, as if he were enjoying a gripping human tragedy, his eyes cold and devoid of pity.

"Go ahead, Scarlett," he thought coldly. "Beat that brat to death, so I don't have to do it myself later."

The entire Russell family being wiped out was exactly what he wanted.

Just as Phoenix raised her hand again, Lucas had a sudden idea. He shouted at the top of his lungs, "Help! Someone is hurting a child! Help!"

His voice was loud and clear, echoing through the hospital hallway and drawing the surprised and alert gazes of several nearby medical staff. Phoenix's hand froze in mid-air, her face turning pale. Lucas seized the opportunity, quickly pulling Emma back and hiding behind the medical staff, using them as a shield.

The medical staff, seeing Lucas's swollen cheek, immediately frowned, their expressions turning serious. "What's going on here? Who did this to him?" They gathered around, their eyes filled with concern and anger.

Emma quickly took Lucas to the nearest examination room. The doctor examined Lucas's injuries, his expression growing more severe. "This is clearly the result of intentional assault. The injuries are very obvious. We must report this to the police. Such child abuse cannot be tolerated!"

Lucas, his face slightly swollen, looked up with determined eyes. "I agree. Call the police."

Emma gently stroked Lucas's face. "Yes, call the police."

The police arrived at the hospital quickly, taking detailed notes of the incident. Lucas bravely identified Scarlett as the assailant, describing the entire process with clear, unafraid words.

When the police entered the hospital room, Phoenix was leaning over George's bed, looking utterly devastated.

Her slender hand tightly held George's, gently stroking his pale cheek, her posture disturbingly intimate, more like a lover than a mother.
