Chapter 383 Take Back
George asked, "How did Grandpa end up like this?"
Scarlett looked up, clearly annoyed. "Oh, so now you care about him? The hospital's been on our case for the bills, and you never pick up my calls."
George's eyes blazed with anger. "I send you money every month for Grandpa's care! How did it get this bad?"
Scarlett rolled her eyes. "That caregiver was too pricey, so I let her go. He's practically a vegetable now, barely hanging on. Why waste the money?"
"Where did all the money I sent for Grandpa go?" George's voice shook with rage.
Scarlett casually admired her new diamond bracelet. "We need to cut costs wherever we can. If it weren't for your grandpa's dumb decision to hand the Russell family over to you, a lovesick fool who gave up everything, we wouldn't be in this mess."
Emma approached the bed, gently holding Charles's cold hand. The once vibrant man who treated her like his own granddaughter was now a lifeless shell.
"George," she choked up, "we can't let Grandpa stay like this."
George nodded. "We're taking him home. I'll hire the best care team, no matter the cost."
Scarlett scoffed. "You think you can cure him? He's been a vegetable for ages."
"At the very least," Emma said firmly, "we'll give him dignity and the best care."
George turned to Emma. "Emma, I'll handle the discharge paperwork."
The room was left with just Emma and Scarlett. The atmosphere was fraught with tension.
"What are you still doing here?" Scarlett coldly stared at Emma, her voice dripping with disdain. "Get out! I don't want to see you."
Emma's voice was barely a whisper, trembling slightly. "I want to stay with Grandpa."
"Stay?" Scarlett laughed derisively. "How dare you! Ever since you came into the Russell family, we've had nothing but trouble."
Emma was deeply hurt by her words. She bit her lip, tears welling up.
"I'm not leaving," she whispered. "I want to take care of Grandpa."
Scarlett's eyes flashed with malice, and she smirked. "You think you're someone important? The Russell family doesn't need a jinx like you. You're just a conniving witch trying to play innocent in front of George."
Emma felt suffocated, overwhelmed by a mix of injustice and anger.
But Scarlett was George's mother; she couldn't fight back. She lowered her head, holding back her tears.
Scarlett continued, "I can't understand why George would choose someone like you. A woman who had a child with another man, what right do you have to be with George?"
"I'll make your life hell, believe me," Scarlett threatened mercilessly. "Don't think you can stay in our family under George's name!"
"Then I'll stay forever," Emma replied quietly.
Scarlett angrily waved her hand, trying to shoo Emma away, but Emma stood her ground, unyielding. Scarlett's authority seemed powerless against her small figure.
"Michael wasn't enough for you, now you have to cling to George?" Scarlett spat. "Emma, are you that desperate for men?"
The room reeked of disinfectant. Emma stood by Charles's bed, trembling slightly. Scarlett's gaze seemed to pierce her fragile heart.
"I didn't, I don't even know who Michael is. I only had Lucas with George! Lucas is our child!"
Scarlett scoffed, "Who can say for sure? Even with a paternity test, it could be faked!"
"Emma! You want to take Charles away, what's your real motive? Don't think I don't know!" Scarlett suddenly exploded. "You tried to poison him once and failed. Now you want to take him away to finish the job, right? You're the one who turned Charles into a vegetable!"
Emma looked up in disbelief. "I didn't poison him, I would never harm Grandpa."
"The police and doctors confirmed it," Scarlett pointed at Charles. "He was poisoned by the cake you brought! That cheap cake, no one else would buy it for Charles but you!"
She lunged forward, shoving Emma hard. "You're the poisoner! Trying to get all of Charles's inheritance?"
Emma stumbled back, tears streaming down her face. "No, I swear I never hurt Grandpa!"
"Swear?" Scarlett sneered. "Who would believe a shameless woman like you?"
She pulled out a lab report from the drawer, slamming it in front of Emma. "Look! The toxicology report, undeniable evidence! What do you have to say now?"
Emma took the report, her hands shaking, tears blurring her vision. "This can't be true; I really didn't."
"Didn't?" Scarlett shouted. "Charles stayed in the nursing home for days without incident. You show up, and he gets poisoned. Who else could it be?"
The tension between them grew, the air thick with hostility. Scarlett suddenly grabbed a water cup from the bedside table, ready to throw it at Emma. "I'll make you pay today!"
Emma instinctively shielded her head. "It's not me, I really love Grandpa!"
"Love?" Scarlett laughed maniacally. "Your love poisoned him! It's killing him!"
She lunged at Emma, and they wrestled in the room. Emma only defended herself, afraid of hurting Charles lying in bed.
"You vicious woman! Bitch!" Scarlett screamed, pulling Emma's hair. "I knew you were up to no good! Are you trying to control the Russell family by killing Charles? You won't stop until we're homeless, will you?"
Emma cried out in pain. "Please believe me; I didn't poison him!"
At that moment, the door burst open. George stood there, shocked by the scene.
"Mom! What are you doing?"
Scarlett immediately let go, pointing at Emma. "Look, the woman you love might be the one who poisoned your grandpa!"
Emma sat on the floor, trembling, tears streaming down her cheeks. She looked at George, her eyes filled with sorrow and helplessness.
