Chapter 838 A Toast To You, See You In The Next Life

Hodge was solemn. He glanced at Eli warily. "Are you being serious?"
"I'm kinda proud that such a bigshot like yourself is so scared of me. Of course, I'm being serious. It's bad enough that you're a simpleton. So, why would I lie to you?" Eli looked out of the window with a smile. "Do you see Century Tower over there? It's the tallest building in D Country. If I jump down from that height, I'll die for sure."
Hodge examined Eli's face.
Eli looked at him flatly. "Give me a chance to see Haward, and you'll have no more worries. It's probably better if you don't tell Sean about it though, in case he questions you. With your power, I have faith that you'll be able to do it."
"Are you really planning to jump down from the Century Tower?" Hodge asked suspiciously.
"A life worse than death right? Why not die instead? I'll say it for the last time, I'm ready," Eli said calmly.
"Then I'll arrange for you to meet Haward tonight. When do you plan to jump?"
"Tomorrow morning. I like blue skies. I don't like the darkness of the night. Plus, I prefer a lively atmosphere. It will seem really pitiful if I do it at night."
"There are too many uncertainties if you do it tomorrow morning. I don't want to wait," Hodge ordered.
Eli sighed heavily. "Please take good care of my two children."
"Sure," Hodge answered without hesitation.
There was nothing left for her to worry about.
"Alright then. Tonight it is. I'll be ugly when I die anyway so at least this way no one can see my body clearly at night. During the day, everyone will be at work. Maybe it'll be livelier at night. That's that then," Eli said easily.
Eli recalled how bad her temper used to be and chuckled. She couldn't believe she was going to die like this. How unexpected. She had been running for so long, and now, it had finally caught up to her.
At 8 o'clock that evening, Eli changed into the Invisibles uniform and blended in with the crowd to visit Haward.
The condition of his cell was poor. The weather was freezing but his bed only had a thin blanket on it. It was dark and wet. There was nothing else apart from the bed.
Eli's eyes were red. She walked to the front of the cell and said, "Haward."
"Eli," Haward got up from the bed and walked to the iron grills excitedly. He smiled happily. "Why are you here? I thought I would never see you again in my life. Who knew we would be able to meet again before I die? I can finally die in peace now."
Eli's nose reddened and tears welled up in her eyes. "If you tell the truth, perhaps Sean will let you go."
"I promised you I wouldn't tell. I don't break promises. Besides, the crimes that they're charging me with are true. I have no defense. I've lost to Sean, that's all. No one is completely innocent," Haward said in an open-minded manner.
"But you had rid yourself of all that. Haward, it's my fault. I owe you my life. If there is a next life, I'll be sure to pay you back," Eli cried.
Haward wiped away the tears on her face. "Then, remember that in the next life, you're mine. My future self will have to thank me. Thinking about my next life, I feel so blessed."
Eli was amused. However, she still couldn't stop feeling sad as her tears continued to roll down her cheeks.
There were some things that she didn't want to say because she didn't want Haward to be sad. She was also afraid that Haward would reveal the truth to save her.
The truth was too cruel. She wouldn't be able to handle the consequences if it was revealed.
In reality, she was dying before Haward. She was using her life to repay him. She felt that it was an unfair deal now that she thought about it. After all, she was trading her life just to see him once. She should have traded it for his freedom instead.
"Alas, I am not that smart nor eloquent like Stella. I probably can't persuade Mr. Turner anyway, so I will lose either way."
"I've brought you your favorite pasta with smoked duck. This is the only dish I cook well. I've also brought you a bottle of red wine. It's a 1982's Lafite. After all, if you don't drink it now, when will you?" Eli said with a smile as she opened the bottle of red wine.
Haward looked at her in adoration, "Eli, tell me, honestly, have you ever liked me? Like truly?"
"I've liked you for a long time. I even had a diary on how to pursue you. However, I returned to my country before anything could happen, so I had to cut my feelings short," Eli said frankly and poured him a glass of wine.
Haward took the red wine with a smile. "I suppose I'm just unlucky."
"Unluckier than me?" Eli didn't want to talk about pessimistic things nor did she want to recall sad memories. She changed the topic and raised her glass.
"I raise this toast to you, Haward. Thank you for taking care of me for the last five years. You allowed me to experience freedom again, as if I had returned to my parents' side. You're my sunshine and I am so lucky to have met you," Eli grinned.
"The happiest days of my life were spent with you too," Haward downed his wine.
"This second toast is to you too. Thanks for being so patient with me despite how clueless I am. I always nag you. I'm sorry," Eli raised her glass and gulped down her wine.
"You have a nice personality. You're honest, straightforward, and you say and do as you please. It's easy to get along with you. I think overall, it's been good," Haward said affectionately.
Eli's eyes were red again.
If she hadn't insisted on returning to the country back then, she would have gotten together with Haward. She definitely would have fallen in love with him and be far away from Sean. Then, none of this would have happened.
Sadly, in this world, there was no such thing as a time machine.
Eli smiled brightly to hide her feelings. "Third toast, I'll never forget you."
Eli couldn't help but want to cry. She quickly raised her glass and drank the wine in one gulp.
Haward saw Eli's tears and drank up the wine in his glass too. He said softly, "Live well, Eli. No matter what happens, as long as your heart is free, nothing can hold you back. If I go to heaven, I promise to look over you."
Eli laughed.
She would die before him, so she was the one who should be looking over him.
However, in reality, they were both dying.
Eli filled both of their glasses with wine. "After we part today, I don't know when we'll meet again. Haward, I'm sorry. I am completely useless for not being able to save you."
Haward chuckled, reaching out his hand and rubbing Eli's head. "I'm the one who's sorry for making you feel guilty and sad. Eli, it doesn't matter. You've been with me for five years and I've been very happy. Don't feel bad. I don't blame you, so you shouldn't blame yourself. Just lead a happy life."
The more Haward talked, the sadder Eli felt.
But she also knew that the sadder she was, the more worried Haward would be.
She wanted to control her emotions. "The final toast is my farewell to you."
Eli raised her head and drank the entire glass of wine in one big gulp...
