Chapter 918 Tolerating Disdain and Accepting Honour
"I need a strong girl by my side. Find one with an untarnished reputation for me, even better if she has never appeared in public before. I'll arrange for her to be my sidekick. Of course, she may also report my situation to you from time to time. After all, this is part of our cooperation, it just shows how sincere I am," Waverly said.
"OK, I'm on it," Bobe said. "When do you want her?"
"Tonight. I'll go over to the Chalton Building to shop for some clothes right now. Ask her to wait for me there," Waverly ordered.
"Okay, we'll be in touch later." Bobe hung up the phone.
Waverly put away her phone, headed outside, and hailed a taxi, bound for the Chalton Building.
The moment she arrived at the entrance, the girl she had asked Bobe to look for also showed up.
Waverly sized the girl in front of her. Her hair was braided and she was wearing a camouflage uniform, her face upset. As for her facial features, nothing too remarkable.
"What's your name?" Waverly asked softly.
She straightened her posture. "Huda," the girl spoke bluntly.
Her lips curled up, Waverly said, "I mean, your real name."
"I don't have any. They call me Huda on this island, hence my name," Huda said blandly.
"I don't think that it sounds good. You may come up with a name that you like and I'll call you that from now on," Waverly said patiently.
Huda thought about it. Her eyes lit up as she said, "Hayley. I think that the name Huda is much too masculine. Hayley suits my character better."
Waverly was speechless.
She quite liked this girl. She thought of the two dogs at Bellamy's place that Stella had sent over a while ago. The black dog was called Knight and it was also a female. She wasn't comparing the girl to a dog, but she felt that there was an uncanny connection between the dog and the girl.
"How about Yuna? Do you like this name?" Waverly asked gently.
"Thank you for your suggestion, Madam. But I think that Hayley has a nicer ring to it." The girl smiled straightforwardly, baring her pearly-white teeth.
"Why not. Then Hayley it is. I'm going to shop for some clothes, so I'll get two sets for you. Your current get-up doesn't cut it. It screams 'fighter' all over. We have to hide our own strengths so that the others will let their guard down. Only then we can save ourselves when we're in trouble. Do you understand?" Waverly said.
Hayley nodded. "I understand. In the future, I'll be working for you and I'll definitely follow your lead. I will take a bullet for your sake if needed."
"I don't want you to die, nor do I want your loyalty or sacrifice. You're still young. You only need to ensure both of us are alive to the best of your abilities. That's all." Waverly smiled and added, "Come on, follow me."
Hayley was puzzled. "Why don't you want me to be loyal? Don't all bodyguards have to be loyal?"
"If Bobe asked you to kill someone, but I asked you to save them, what would you do?" Waverly asked, unhurried.
Hayley thought for a moment before shaking her head. "Bobe brought me up, and I owe him a lot. If it weren't for him, I would've starved to death long ago. But you're my boss and I should be loyal to you. Well, you've got me there."
"Let's not talk about this then. At least up to this point, Bobe and I are on the same side. Let's go shopping. I have a lot of things on my list," Waverly said as she took a step forward.
She bought three bottles of perfume, two complete sets of cosmetics, the entire line of TF-branded lipsticks, and six sets of clothes. For Hayley, she also bought two more sets of clothes in addition to some earrings, glasses, and hats.
However, all of this came out of her own pocket. She used to receive a hefty salary when she had been overseeing the cabinet as the President's wife. Bellamy was very generous to her.
It was almost 10 o'clock when she and Hayley got in a taxi back home. She thought that she should buy a car for herself, for it was outrageously inconvenient to hail a taxi here.
When they reached the gates, they were stopped by the security. "Sorry, Miss Martell, we're under orders to not let taxis enter the compound. It's for everyone's safety."
Waverly didn't want to trouble the security guards. Although the rule was targeted at her, as an order by the higher-ups, the guards could only comply and enforce it accordingly. If they didn't, a lay-off would await.
"I know. Thank you." Wearing a tender smile, Waverly got out of the car.
Hayley was Herculean-strong. She helped Waverly carry some shopping bags and trailed behind her.
"Madam, let me take those instead. I'm quite strong, so I can still carry some more," Hayley offered.
Waverly looked at her, a mild smile on her face. "You have enough on your hands. I can manage. Let's go. We still have two kilometers to walk. It may be a little tough for you."
"Madam, look," Hayley said while looking over to the road. "Why can that taxi come in, but not ours?"
Waverly looked at the taxi passing by in front of her, her eyes narrowed.
She didn't know the girl sitting in the car. Her face was very unfamiliar and she looked very young. Perhaps she was a family friend.
"Because I'm not respected, yet." Waverly shrugged it off.
Hayley looked at Waverly, sympathy evident in her gaze. "Let's not care about them. Walking is good for health."
Waverly glanced sideways at Hayley. "Don't look at me like that. I'm not pitiful. I'm just sticking it out for now and waiting for the right moment to strike back. The more we can endure, the better the outcome will be for us. We're not being looked down; we're laying low."
Hayley nodded. She said with a giggle, "That's a little profound, but I think it makes sense. Anything you say is correct, Madam."
Waverly continued walking forward. Fortunately, she was not wearing her killer high-heels that day. After walking for about 20 minutes, she found herself in the courtyard.
Before she could enter, her ears picked up on raucous music crashing from within. She immediately knew that it must come from Qianna. Only she could be arrogant, unreasonable, and superficial enough to resort to this.
She walked into the house, and the noise grew deafeningly louder. The house felt like it was shaking. The inside was packed with humans, including a bunch of glamorous women and well-dressed men. All kinds of glimmering cocktails and fancy delicacies were stationed on the dining table.
"Follow me into the room first," Waverly whispered to Hayley.
Qianna blocked in front of Waverly and spoke charmingly, "You said that I could stay here any time. So today, here I am, throwing a blast of a party. Surely I'm not disturbing you, right?"
Not the least bit shaken, Waverly took in her coquettish face and said, "Get out of the way."
"What if I don't want to?" Qianna was holding her head high. She swirled the wine glass in her hand, intending to wag up a ruckus where there was none.
Hayley's eyes widened, wanting to teach her a lesson. Waverly held her back and said with a hint of smirk, "I don't see why you should. Anyway, I have nothing to do, so I could very well use a staring contest right now. But I'll be ruining your fun at the party. Don't accuse me of not behaving myself then."
Qianna pursed her lips upon noticing that Waverly wasn't offended at all. She was incensed at Waverly's reaction, as if what she had done was pointless, as if Waverly was rubbing her fiasco in her face.
"Do you think that I'll let you go just because you say so?" Qianna said disdainfully, all geared up to mess with Waverly.
