Chapter 989 Stay Away From Me
The atmosphere of the meal was incredibly nice.
The guests were all young people filled with ideologies, ambitions and dreams, only lacking in shrewdness.
Their topics went from investments to women, from women to investments and from investments to politics.
"Waverly, why don't you say something," someone called out for Waverly while they were discussing politics.
Waverly smiled.
Over the past five years, she had lived in the center of politics and had long forgotten about the peaceful lives of common people.
She was finally at a down-to-earth gathering of civilians, so she subconsciously was against talking about politics.
Everyone was looking at her. If she didn't say anything, it would seem that she would make them lose face.
She said, "When I was in A Country, there was a famous host who said that the national policy was bad when we were eating. They were recorded by the people who ate next to them and the clip was later posted on the Internet. As a result, the host lost his job. However, A Country's policy was still tolerant and did not force the host to rot in prison. This matter alarmed many famous people, especially the national leaders."
"One of the leaders had a private gathering once. The waitress said that in order to ensure their safety, it was best to keep their cell phones with her and she would give it back to them after the meal."
"Those people thought about it and all agreed. After all, they were all famous people, so they handed their mobile phones to the waitress.
"When the party was over, they went to ask for their mobile phones and found that the waitress had disappeared. Then, they asked the owner of the shop and found out that the waitress didn't even work there.
"A day later, they all received a text message. The beginning of the message was like this, 'I know your secret. If you want to have your mobile phones back and make sure that your secret is not revealed, pay me 100,000 dollars.'"
"Ah, is that real?" Hanold asked.
"It's just a joke," Waverly said in a light tone.
Yazoo looked at her with admiration.
She had been the legitimate wife of the President of A Country. Politics was a sensitive topic for her to talk about at the dinner table.
If others discussed politics, it would just be for fun.
If she discussed it, it would be too authoritative and dangerous.
However, she had used a joke to shift the awkwardness and had livened up the atmosphere instead. She had also hinted to the others that politics was sensitive and it was best not to speak about it.
Her actions had been perfect.
"You've changed a lot compared to when you were young," Yazoo said. "We met a few times when we were still children. I don't know if you still remember."
"Yes, I do. I remember that Mr. Moore had an excellent relationship with the Mccarthy family, especially with Uncle Thomson, hence the reason why he kept coming to our house. During those gatherings, you were young but precocious. You often stayed with the adults and didn't play with us," Waverly said.
"Precocious...That doesn't sound like a compliment," Yazoo said, while swirling his glass of wine.
"That's not what I meant. What I meant was that you were quite mature for a child. When I was a child, I was too wayward, too self-righteous and competitive. I didn't have a good relationship with Joseph at the time. We always fought with each other," Waverly explained.
"I met him last night. He hasn't changed much. He's still as brash as he was back then, making me want to hit him. What's wrong? Do you still have a bad relationship with him?" Yazoo asked tentatively.
The corners of Waverly's mouth twitched. Their relationship could not even be considered bad, as it was already disastrous. She replied, "We're like cats and dogs."
There was a knock on the door.
Waverly subconsciously looked at the door. Joseph held a wine glass and walked in with his arms around Yasmine's waist.
At first, there was a smile on his face. However, when he saw Waverly, a sharp glint appeared in his eyes, as if he had seen his prey.
The moment Waverly saw him, her facial expression turned icy.
"What a coincidence. I heard my manager mention that you guys were eating here, so I came over to propose a toast to you all. I'll be treating you all today," Joseph said as he walked towards Yazoo.
Yasmine also saw Waverly sitting next to Yazoo and her expression darkened.
When the others saw Joseph coming over to propose a toast, they all stood up respectfully.
The Mccarthy family was one of the biggest clans in M Country. In particular, Joseph and Thomson were currently the 2 leading figures of the Mccarthy family.
Many of them wouldn't be able to meet Joseph this easily.
Some of them even worshiped him as if he was their idol.
Seeing that they all stood up, Waverly also followed along and raised her wine glass.
Joseph stood next to Waverly and clinked his glass with Yazoo's, "You're really not a loyal friend. You didn't even invite me to the gathering."
"I'll invite you on another day, but I'm afraid you won't have the time," Yazoo said apologetically.
"If you call me, I will definitely come," Joseph replied, his gaze as sharp as a knife. He glanced at Waverly and drank the wine in the glass.
As the others were drinking one after another, Waverly also took a small sip.
"The more the merrier. You don't mind adding two more chairs, do you?" Joseph said teasingly.
What he said sounded polite, but the words felt domineering coming out of his mouth. As a result, Yazoo couldn't refuse him.
His tone, which had been relaxed, suddenly became cautious upon Joseph's arrival.
"Of course I don't mind," Yazoo said good-naturedly and looked at the waiter.
Waverly sat still. She was upset to see him come.
"Please get out of the way," Joseph said to Waverly with his drooping eyes and arrogant tone.
Waverly frowned and looked at him coldly. She didn't want to quarrel with him even though he was a shameless, despicable and dirty man.
She stood up.
"Waverly, sit here," Hanold said with a smile.
Waverly thanked Hanold. Fortunately, he had saved her a seat. Otherwise, she would be humiliated. She then sat next to Hanold.
Joseph sat down. Just like a king, he looked down on Hanold and asked with great displeasure, "What's your name?"
Waverly had a bad feeling and she was afraid that Joseph would bully Hanold. Before Hanold said anything, she stopped him and said, "Joseph, watch yourself."
Joseph's glare became sharper, and there was a cold murderous aura emanating from him. He warned, "It's you that should watch yourself. This isn't the circle of people you're supposed to be in."
Waverly raised the corners of her mouth and provocatively asked, "Then, which friend circle should I interact with? Yours?"
"Are you even worthy of that?" he said unceremoniously. "You don't even deserve to carry my girlfriend's shoes."
"Then stay away from me," Waverly replied as she snorted, not caring in the slightest bit. She glared even more coldly at him, "Can you swear that in front of your woman and Yazoo that you'll stay away from me in the future? That you'll be able to keep me at a distance of more than ten meters?"
"Get out of M Country then. You're not welcome here."
"I don't need anyone to welcome me. If I want to come, then I'll come. Do you not dare to swear? Or do you like me instead?" Waverly asked bluntly.
"Like you?" Joseph said sarcastically. "Anyone with a pair of functioning eyes can tell that Yasmine is a hundred times better than you. How dare you say I like you?"
"How dare me? I happen to hate you too. Since you want us to die together, why not be straightforward? If you continue to pester me, you will die a terrible death. You won't get anything out of doing so. Do you dare to swear on it?" Waverly asked. She failed to show any sign of weakness nor give him room to retreat.
