Chapter 962 Why Wouldn't I?
"Of course, you have the power to do so. I mean, you could even appoint me as the head of the finance department, but this will only invoke resentment towards you. Sooner or later, all that resentment will explode. Even if they look like they respect you on the outside, in reality, they're just suppressing their disgust. Someone is going to slide in and take advantage of that."
"What advantage? Are they going to take over my role as the head? Fine by me." Thomson sat firmly in his seat. "Even if I no longer held the position, I won't die. However, I can't bear the thought that I can't even get one of my own into the company."
"Uncle, I understand you're trying to be nice. I will forever remember your kindness towards me, but I've already found a job. I begin next Monday," Waverly responded with a smile.
"Are you going to work somewhere else?" He frowned in disappointment.
The smile on her face didn't change. "Uncle, are you worried that others will slander me?"
"You don't have to worry about them. It's clear that you're innocent," he proceeded to comfort her.
"There have been people whom I know and don't know, who have slandered my name. Since those who do so aren't my friends, their words mean nothing to me, so you don't need to worry about me. I'm fine. On the contrary, those of the Mccarthy family are brazen enough to speak ill of me. Outsiders dare not do so because I'm part of this family, " she told him.
Thomson focused his gaze on her quietly for a second. "You've grown up, and you're far more mature than you were 5 years ago. What happened back then was our fault."
"The Mccarthy family didn't wrong me. I did everything willingly. However, there's one thing that I want to ask of you, Uncle Thomson," she uttered gently.
"Go ahead," he urged her in a generous tone.
"I need you to set me up with someone," she continued.
Startled, Thomson paused for a while before asking, "You wish to get married?"
"It's still too early to say that. I can't just marry someone without going through the proper flow. I just want to see if anyone's willing to date me. That way, I'll know the word on the streets about me. If I can find someone, then we can try dating. If the fates have it, I wouldn't mind getting married. I mean, I can't be single forever, can I?" She voiced her thoughts softly.
If Thomson set her up with someone, then Joseph wouldn't be able to get his way with her that easily.
On the other hand, she would choose someone with a prominent background. This way, he could also act as her shield. Joseph wouldn't be able to expose their relationship, and she'd be able to do her own things diligently.
She truly despised the thought that he could just have his way with her however he wanted.
If things worked out the way she planned, she'd be able to put a reign on Joseph while sending a message to Bellamy at the same time. She'd be able to tell him that she had found the one she loved.
"I'll ask around. If there's a suitable candidate, I'll set the both of you up," he grunted, sounding unhappy.
"Uncle, are you concerned about the rumours that may spread?" She tilted her head and asked.
"You're getting back into the dating scene this fast. I'm just scared that there'll be unflattering comments about you."
Waverly chuckled. "I've not been the most popular person in a long time. No matter what I do, they already have that opinion of me solidified inside their heads. Even if I do something good, they'll start to doubt my intentions behind it. Because of this, those who they think are bad will always remain 'bad'. I'm not upset by them. Besides, I should be chasing my own happiness. After all, they can say what they want, but at the end of the day, I am in charge of my own happiness."
"Fair enough. Then give me some time to find an ideal guy for you."
"You should tell them about my situation. The other party should be prepared for whatever comes their way, let them come into this willingly. There's no point forcing them into it."
Thomson looked at her with concern. "You're a good girl. You'll get your happiness."
"If that's the case, then I'll take my leave. I don't want to disturb your work," she bade him goodbye as she got up, preparing to leave.
"Would you like to have lunch with me?" He offered before she stepped out.
"Hayley's already prepared lunch. If I have it here, she'll whine about it. Goodbye for now, Uncle Thomson." She nodded, turned around, and left.
"Miss Martell has such a big heart," Darius sighed.
"For so many years, she has been mature, graceful, and intelligent. However, her situation is a little pitiful. When she was young, Qianna snatched her boyfriend from her. Then, she was framed and had to get a divorce. Even when she was a child, she didn't get much love from Melinda," Thomson groaned. "You may go about with your day. I'm going to give my friend a call."
"Okay," Darius responded. After saying this, he quickly rushed out of the house. When he spotted Waverly, he shouted out to her, "Miss Martell, hold on."
She turned around and looked at him.
"Thank you for your advice that day, Miss Martell. I apologize for being so irrational," he expressed sincerely.
"Uncle Thomson doesn't like it when families fight among each other, and he doesn't like it when we doubt each other's intentions. Darius, you're not blind. Uncle Thomson is a kind man, but he's as straight as a ruler. He often offends the elders without even realizing it. For now, they don't have much power, so they just go along with it, but in reality, they're all plotting a plan behind his back. If anything happens, they'll form a strong coalition to take him down. Since you're his trusted right-hand man, you should take the responsibility to watch out for him. He respects you very much, and your opinions mean a lot to him. He'll definitely take your words into consideration."
"Your wisdom truly outshines you, Miss Martell. You see right through the problem, and I admire you very much for that. If someone does something bad to the Master, I'll protect him even at the cost of my life."
"Your job is to let my uncle know about those who are using him. Instead of helping him to look out for these people, it's better if you could aid him in avoiding them. Words meant nothing. If you ever find evidence of someone betraying him, you should just tell him right away, don't be afraid of hurting his feelings. Don't wait until it's too late," Waverly advised as she walked along the pond outside the house.
As she approached the entrance to the house, she sensed that something was amiss. What's more, there were some guards at the door.
Her intuition told her that she shouldn't go in, but if she didn't go in, she wouldn't know what was going to happen to Hayley.
Immediately, she rushed forward and pushed the door open.
Hayley was being held on all fours on the ground, not able to move an inch.
Giselle was seated on the sofa, fuming at the brim. When she noticed Waverly walk in, she shouted, "Kill her, make sure she's dead."
In just a second, there were a bunch of people rushing towards her. She could see hands coming in all directions toward her face.
Waverly knew that there was no escape from this. She had just left Thomson's place, so she knew he wouldn't make it in time to save her.
The men beat her up brutally, showing no mercy. They raised their feet and stomped on her, fists flew all around the air.
Finally, she couldn't take it anymore. She fell to the ground and shielded her head with her hands, taking their kicks.
At first, she could feel the pain. But soon enough, everything became numb, and even her mind started turning blank. Despite that, she continued to clamp her mouth shut, not making a sound.
"Stop it, stop it! If you guys don't stop, I'll kill all of you!" Hayley screamed and lashed out at them. A burst of energy surged through her body and she struggled out of the grips of the two men who were holding her down. Grabbing a knife, she stabbed at the two men who were attacking Waverly.
Seeing this, the other men were frightened. Before they could react, Hayley had her knife on Giselle's neck.
"I dare you," she threatened, but her voice was shaking.
"You were going to kill me. Why would I hold back?" Hayley spat back angrily.
