Chapter 855 It's Easy For You To Kill Me, Why Bother...
"Huh?" Eli looked at Sean in disbelief and shook her head.
Sean's eyes grew sharp and said, "Don't tell me you're still thinking of running away?"
Eli shook her head again and asked him, "What were we talking about just now?"
"If you could prove your love to me, I'll let you and your friends meet. Could you prove your sincerity?" Sean asked cryptically.
Eli nodded and said, "I'm just a cripple and a homeless woman. I'll be a burden to others if I run away. Do you think that I would have anywhere else to go apart from being with you? Time after time, I thought there was no obstacle I couldn't overcome, but now, I'm merely a shadow of my former self, struggling to carry on. Rest assured, I will not act impulsively."
"Are you insinuating that being by my side is a struggle for you? Aren't you being impulsive right now?" Sean said, his voice on edge.
"I... I misspoke. What I meant was... I got my parents killed when I escaped the first time. I became a cripple the second time I left. There won't be a third time. When I die, I will die by your side," Eli said without mincing her words.
Sean did not soften his gaze, suspecting that she was still hiding something from him.
A staff member appeared soon and handed over the marriage certificate to them.
Eli was in no hurry to accept the certificate. After all, she was not 'Cassie'. She felt like a stranger, feeling a wave of insincerity washing over her.
Sean studied the marriage certificate and caught sight of her in the photo. She was smiling happily and her body was leaning into him.
With tenderness in his eyes, he handed the marriage certificate to her.
Eli took the certificate over, but she only had one hand. She could not open it to take a look.
Sean sighed, "Your arm will definitely heal in time. They assured me that it will only take a month."
Eli handed the marriage certificate back to Sean and said, "You should keep it. I'm a little tired and I'd like to go back to sleep. Could we leave now?"
"Okay," Sean put the marriage certificate away, held Eli's hand, and headed outside.
Eli scanned her surroundings. There was nothing unusual apart from Sean's men. Even the weather today was exceptionally fair.
Sean opened the door for her and she got into the car in a daze.
"What's on your mind?" Sean asked.
Eli shook her head. She was not thinking about anything. She just wanted to empty her mind and take a rest.
"What would you like to have for lunch? I'll ask them to start preparing now. You should have a meal when you get back and sleep after that," Sean said gently.
Eli perked up as she thought of that day when she had the fresh and delicious crab roe. "I would like to have some crabs."
"You've just recovered from a serious illness, so you shouldn't be having seafood. You should eat warm, nourishing food," Sean said.
Eli frowned and looked at Sean. He asked her what her favorite food was, yet he forbade her from eating it. Was he doing this on purpose?
She stopped talking and looked out of the window, leaning against the panel.
When Haward was still around, he would always buy her a lot of crab at this time of the year.
Even though he was not fond of crabs, he would still peel the crab shells off for her every time.
She would eat three or four of them in a single meal, and Haward would prepare sweet ginger tea for her after that.
Those vivid scenes were lost in her memories. It was impossible for her to return to those times again.
"What else would you like to eat, apart from crabs?" Sean asked Eli again.
What was the point of asking her what she wanted to eat?
He wasn't going to let her eat what she liked, anyway.
"I'm fine with anything," Eli said in disappointment as she gazed blankly out the window. She was feeling a little melancholic but she did not want to make it seem obvious. Hence, she closed her eyes and started to doze off.
Grasping her shoulders, Sean pulled her close and said, "It'll take us an hour to reach home. You should take a nap if you are sleepy. I'll hold you, and I won't let you fall."
Eli stared at Sean in confusion.
He sounded as if he was doting on her when he said those words, but she recalled just how cold and harsh he was that day when he falsely accused her of releasing a snake to bite his girlfriend
Eli had always been a daydreamer since she was young. Back then, those little positive things he did for her were enough to make up for his past mistakes, and it even gave her the illusion that he loved her.
However, she was older and far more rational now. She stopped daydreaming and yearning for the impossible, and she had become exceedingly realistic.
Sean hated her so much in the past. Why was he treating her so well all of a sudden?
She did not dare to ask. No matter what the answer was, she had no fight left in her to dispute it, so she decided to just play along.
The car jerked and wobbled.
She was only pretending to take a nap at first. However, she did not expect to fall asleep eventually.
Sean gazed at her sleeping face. Her mouth was slightly parted, and she was drooling slightly.
Even so, he did not push her away.
Eli disliked him a long time ago. Even though she was pregnant with his child, she was still thinking of leaving him.
She eventually fell in love with him. At that time, he could genuinely sense that her love for him was real.
Perhaps she resented him now, but that no longer mattered. He had a lifetime to change her mind. She might eventually stop dwelling on the past, and she might even fall in love with him again.
The car stopped about an hour after. Eli opened her eyes in a daze, looked at him, and whispered coyly, "I would like some crabs."
Sean conceded and said, "Okay, but you can only eat one."
Eli smiled, closed her eyes, and fell asleep again.
One of Sean's men appeared to open the car door.
Concerned that he would wake Eli up, Sean said, "It's alright. Let's just wait until she wakes up."
Hearing his voice, Eli opened her eyes again, as if she had realized something. She got up, looked out of the window, and asked while she wiped the corners of her mouth, "Have we arrived?"
"Yes, wash your face and let's have lunch together," Sean replied, getting out of the car. He checked his clothes, which were covered in Eli's saliva stains.
He took off his suit and handed it to his men, leaving on a plain white shirt.
She noticed his gesture, and she wondered if he didn't like her leaning on his clothes,
It did seem a bit obvious.
She ignored the slight discomfort in her heart. Looking away, she entered the house.
The chefs were lined up in an orderly fashion on both sides of the hallway.
Reuben walked up and glanced at Eli before addressing Sean respectfully, "Lunch is served. Mr. and Mrs. Yaleman, please."
"Do we still have the crabs that we bought last time? Bring out a fresh one and steam it. Mrs. Yaleman wishes to have it," Sean ordered.
Reuben replied with a nod. "Certainly."
He turned around briskly and went off to get the crabs.
Eli scratched her head.
Were her ears deceiving her? Did Sean really order crabs for her? "You didn't poison the crabs, did you?"
Sean frowned slightly and said, "You don't have to eat it if you really think that it's been poisoned."
"I'll eat it! It'll be easy for you if you wanted to get rid of me anyway. You wouldn't have to go to this much trouble, would you?" Eli remarked jovially as she settled in her seat at the dining table.
The meal was quite sumptuous, and there were many dishes that Eli had not eaten before. They all looked quite luxurious and exquisitely made. The portions were small, but there were many courses.
She nibbled on what looked like a small bun with some stuffing which she could not seem to identify. It was soft and sticky, sweet and fresh. All in all, it was quite delicious. "What is the stuffing?"
Sean did not know either, and he turned to look at the chef.
The chef stepped forward and explained, "The stuffing consists of pork belly, carrots, and shrimp."
"Oh, that sounds yummy," She ate three at a time, and she was already full after eating a fifth of the dishes prepared.
The more she thought about it, the more she felt that something was off...
