Chapter 999 Because Of You

"How long do we have to wait until we can eat?" Joseph changed the subject.
"Ten more minutes," Waverly answered.
He turned around and went out of the kitchen without saying another word.
Waverly let out a sigh of relief. She quickly held onto the sink, supporting herself as she rested for a while; her legs had gone weak like jelly during their stressful exchange.
After a short rest, she continued cooking.
Ten minutes later, Waverly went out and saw Joseph sitting on the sofa with his phone in his hand, typing a message with his head down.
"It's time to eat," Waverly shouted at him.
Just then, Hayley came rushing through the door with a bottle of wine in hand. She felt a little surprised to sense that the atmosphere between them was not as negatively-charged or as tense as it was before.
As Hayley didn't want to eat with Joseph, she went to the kitchen without greeting him. "Madam, are you all right?"
Waverly nodded. "You should stay in the kitchen later. I have to talk to him about something."
Hayley looked at her helplessly. "If he tries to hurt you, just scream for me. I'll come out immediately."
Waverly gave her a small smile. "Okay."
"I'll help you serve the dishes," Hayley offered as she helped serve the roasted pork loin that Waverly had made.
Waverly also grabbed the bowl of the quail egg salad and went out of the kitchen.
Joseph walked over, glancing at the table. "It looks good. I don't think I've ever had your cooking before."
"I've added some poison in them," Waverly deliberately provoked him.
Joseph pulled the chair out, sat down, and tuned to Waverly with a smile. He looked confident, as if he understood what she meant by that.
Waverly did not look at him for too long. She broke eye contact with him and walked towards the kitchen.
"Madam, let's put poison in the food," Hayley suggested, inspired by Waverly's remark.
Waverly was actually contemplating it as well. Perhaps, she could give it a try. "Sleeping pills. Do we have any in the house?"
Hayley shook her head. "I'll have some ready next time. It's a rush this time round."
Waverly nodded.
"Madam, I'll buy some rat poison too," Hayley added mischievously.
"Rat poison won't kill him, and when he comes to, he'd let you have a funeral without a body. Let's give the sleeping pills a shot first," Waverly advised as she went out with the chicken stew. She immediately saw Joseph holding a device in his hand.
She walked over suspiciously and asked, "What's this?"
Joseph placed the device on the table and replied, "My research team has just developed this. In simpler terms, it shows you the ingredients used for a dish. It's handy and very portable too. You just reminded me that I could test it out to see if you've put poison in the food."
That caught off Waverly guard.
She knitted her eyebrows and sat across from him. "Are you suspecting that I poisoned the dishes?"
"You, poison? Isn't that what you're good at?" The corner of his mouth curled up as he teased, "What's wrong? You forgot to buy them because you were in a hurry?"
He picked up a piece of chicken from the stew and took a bite. "It's nothing special!" He commented.
Waverly's eyes became aloof. "If you don't like it, don't ever come over and eat anymore. It was a waste of time for me to sneak out just to cook for you. If your girlfriend finds out, she will definitely make things difficult for me."
"Heh." Joseph chuckled. "To me, it's not a good thing if something's too tasty because you'll crave for it and suffer when you can't eat it. But if it's nothing to shout about, it's a dish easily forgotten."
Waverly didn't understand what he meant. She opened the bottle of red wine and mocked, "You must be surrounded by intellectual people. Not many will understand the riddles that you speak."
"That's why I've always been very lonely," Joseph admitted truthfully as he looked on at the bottle of red wine in her hand.
Waverly was not strong, so she couldn't insert the cork screw into the cork. After several tries, she still couldn't pop open the wine bottle.
She remembered that it used to be quite easy to open a bottle of red wine, but why was it so difficult this time?
Joseph took the bottle from her and opened it with ease. He poured half a glass of wine for her and half a glass for himself.
Waverly took a small sip, but found that she didn't like it. The wine was sour and unpleasant to drink. It tasted different from what she had before.
She looked at the bottle, and saw that it was indeed red wine.
Joseph also placed the glass of red wine aside after taking a small sip of the wine and complained, "Where did you get this wine from?"
"Hayley went out to buy it. Didn't you hear us just now?" Waverly replied.
"I'll get someone to bring some red wine over later. Yours is terrible," Joseph impolitely commented.
She didn't understand red wine at all. The one she had before had been prepared by Bellamy.
Nevertheless, she still could tell which tasted good and which one did not when she drank it.
"Joseph, I have something to tell you." Waverly started to speak, but paused in her speech.
Joseph looked at her, waiting for her to continue.
"Your girlfriend asked me to be in charge of the cooking competition, but she didn't give me the list of chefs we need. The Celestial Aroma Restaurant that we dined in previously is yours, right? I heard that the best chef around is in your restaurant. Will you let them participate in the competition? The competition will be broadcasted on TV, which will be helpful to your hotel's reputation," Waverly proposed.
"She allocated you this responsibility?" The corner of Joseph's mouth curled up, and he subconsciously picked up the wine glass. When he remembered how bad the wine was, he put the wine glass back down.
Looking at Joseph's expression, Waverly realized something. She asked suspiciously, "Do you have any suggestions for me?"
Joseph nodded slowly, looking a little sluggish but gracious. "If I'm right, you won't be able to find a chef. And even if you manage to find one, you'll end up more embarrassed than not finding one."
She knew this the moment she accepted the task.
Even though she was well aware of that, she still desired to work hard and rise up to the challenge. The more difficult the task was, the more she wanted to solve it.
"So, you aren't willing to lend me your chef?" Waverly sighed and finished the wine from her glass.
"To be exact, she had ordered my chef to be one of the top five chefs yesterday. She'll make sure that you fail in your tasks, but she won't with hers. After all, she's responsible for the competition," Joseph clarified. Seeing that she had drunk all her wine, he picked up the glass again and took a sip. The second sip was not as bad as the first.
Waverly let out a sneer. "Not only is she going to succeed, she'll also emerge as a savior, clearly letting others know the difference between her and I. She's such a scheming fox. You two are definitely a good match. You've got great taste."
Joseph swirled the red wine glass in his hand and asked, "Do you still remember the essay that you wrote that won a prize back in junior high? You were punished by Grandpa because of that essay."
She vaguely remembered what had happened.
She was not punished for writing the essay, but rather, for the essay's content. She had also quarreled with Joseph over it.
She gave various examples that demonstrated and proved the validity of what she had written in her essay, but this was all part of Joseph's plans. In her essay, she had posited a radical idea. She couldn't remember what it was about now, but that radical idea was the reason why Joseph's grandfather punished her the way he did.
