Chapter 966 Even Ants Have a Better Death
Waverly turned to face the direction in which the voice came from, feeling very shaken. Although she couldn't see anything, her head was spinning.
It didn't take much for her to know that Joseph was a man capable of his word.
Even so, she couldn't let him see her sadness or terror on her face. If he did, he'd do something even more absurd.
"Well, if you were going to do anything, it would've been part of your plan either way, right?" Gathering her emotions, she did her best to reply to him calmly.
He sat down beside her.
She could smell the scent of blood coming from his body.
He didn't answer her. Instead, he left her hanging, which was the worst sort of torture. Powerful detectives often used this method. They would first lock the accused into a jail cell for 24 hours, not saying a word to them. That way, the person would just drown in his own thoughts.
Unconsciously, a person's mind would wander into the worst-case scenario. All the bad thoughts they had lingering at the edge of their mind would resurface and ruin the last inch of sanity they had left. When this happened, it would help the detectives manipulate their thoughts easily.
She couldn't allow herself to ponder in her own thoughts, and she couldn't break the silence. She had to remain calmer than him.
Suddenly, he let out a snicker.
She followed him and chuckled, sounding more ironic than him.
Joseph's eyes flashed with a cruel and ferocious light. "What are you laughing at?"
The corners of her mouth raised slightly. She turned around to face him. "A successful man will search for pleasure with his own capabilities, wisdom, courage, and power. Only a useless man would find happiness in threatening a woman."
He grabbed her chin and retorted with a fierce look, "So you don't think I'll succeed?"
"I've never seen a successful man wasting so much effort on a useless woman."
He shoved her face roughly. "You're right. Thanks for the reminder."
After saying that, he stood up to leave. Before doing so, he kicked the chair he was sitting on.
She heard the sound of the chair falling to the ground, followed by the sound of the door closing.
In the next three days, she didn't notice any sign of Joseph.
Without her sight, it felt like she was being isolated from the rest of the world. Although Hayley was by her side taking care of her, she didn't have any freedom either.
That day, the sky was clear and sunny. Waverly wanted to head out to get some sunshine, so she informed Hayley of this.
After some time, Hayley returned to her angrily. "They're really going too far. What the hell do they take us for? Do they really think we're prisoners? You don't even have the freedom to go out. I'm so angry."
Compared to a furious Hayley, Waverly was very calm. "It doesn't matter. Help me to the bedside. Open the windows and let the sunlight shine through."
"Madam, why should we be bullied in this place? Let's get the President to take us away," Hayley whined as she helped her to the window.
As the sun hit her skin, she could also feel the cool breeze sweeping past her. There was even a hint of the scent of the wet grass from outside as she inhaled.
She didn't reply to Hayley. Instead, she sat there quietly and took all of it in.
"Madam, did you hear what I said? I don't think you should stay here. Instead of making the President worry, it's better if you leave here and live a happy life," Hayley continued to protest.
"Hayley," Waverly called out in a low voice. "When I was very young, I read this story. The story mentioned that ants are terrified of fire. Even the smallest flame could kill them. There came a time when they encountered a flame in their way, and they had to get over it. Do you know what the ants did?"
"What did they do?" Hayley had never heard of this story.
"They huddled together and formed a big ball. Then, they rolled over the fire together. The ants forming the outer surface of the ball were burned, but those on the inside made it through safely. Even though they're minuscule, and their actions might not have made even a huge impact, in order to reach their goal, they made this sacrifice. This tiny sacrifice was their whole life," Waverly told the story blankly.
"But you're not an ant. You can live a good life and help many people," Hayley argued as tears welled up in her eyes.
Waverly took a deep breath. "In the eyes of many people, I am an ant, and I'm insignificant. Even if I try my best, I'll still crumble down in front of them, but it doesn't matter. I haven't given up, so that's good. Therefore, don't bring up the future anymore, okay? Don't say anything about asking Bellamy to rescue me, alright?"
"I just think that your sacrifices are too much and unappreciated." Hayley struggled to choke back a sob.
"Whether it's appreciated or not, that's up to me. If I make this decision myself, then I won't be used by others. Hayley, have the flowers bloomed? I can smell their fragrant scent. Since they won't let us out, can you go pick some and put them in a vase?" Waverly requested.
Hayley sighed. "Give me a minute, Madam. I'll go pick them now."
"Okay."
Waverly continued standing in front of the window.
There was the sound of the door swinging open. Judging by the sound of the footsteps, Waverly knew they belonged to the woman they called Lina.
"You're in a good mood today. Honestly, I'm not sure whether you even have a heart. How can you be so cruel? Mr. Mccarthy treats you so well, yet you don't appreciate it," Lina remarked in a strange tone.
Waverly couldn't be bothered to answer her.
"So have you become deaf now?" Lina yelled.
Smiling slightly, Waverly continued to look out of the window. "If he really treats me well, then would you even be speaking to me in that tone?"
"That's because I'm angry for him. Because of you, he sacrificed their mother-son relationship. Did you know he had to kneel in front of her for two hours straight? Hell, he even received a beating from Weldon. His injuries are equally as severe as yours and he's been in bed the whole day; he can't even get up. Look at you, you can stand, and even talk so casually. You should know how strong he is, so can you imagine how severe the beating he received was?" The more she spoke, the angrier Lina got.
Waverly sneered, turned around and faced her.
Lina was startled. If it wasn't for the blindfold over Waverly's eyes, she would think that she had regained her sight.
"So, because Giselle had me beaten until I became blind and because I threatened her after that, that makes me evil? And now he's being punished for not punishing me? Man, this family is really weird," Waverly mocked ironically.
"Who do you think you are? You're just a lewd sl*t. How dare you seduce him? If you don't deserve to be punished, then who else does? You deserve to die! Madam Mccarthy is such a noble person. How dare you threaten her? She's already showing you mercy by not ripping you to shreds," Lina warned her.
"Then I have nothing to say to you," Waverly continued to look out of the window.
"Don't be too full of yourself. Do you really think that Mr. Mccarthy is just waiting by your feet? He showered Sandy with love today. Who knows, maybe he'll feed you to the dogs tomorrow?" Lina commented proudly.
Waverly remained calm, regardless.
She knew that a person like Joseph was surrounded by beautiful women.
In the future, he would be surrounded by even more of them. Even in his fifties, he would still be surrounded by girls in their twenties.
She had no choice but to be defiled by a person like that. She didn't want any of it, but it was better than being dead.
If she died, then it would be too much of a loss. She had yet to achieve anything with her life.
