Chapter 934 More Than Expected
Waverly couldn't believe all of what Joseph was saying, but it had a ring of truth to it.
However, that piece of news was still too shocking to her.
"Why did you tell me all these? Aren't you afraid that I'll confront the Mccarthys?" Waverly asked doubtfully.
Joseph leaned on the chair lazily and said, "You are not allowed to have any close relationships with your relatives in A Country. You have been in A Country for too long. It's so that you won't be mentally affected by it. Besides, even if I didn't tell you, would you just stay away from the Mccarthys?"
Waverly was silent. She knew that her silence was as good as a definite answer to him. She smiled and raised the wine glass on the table, saying, "I can't even beat you, what more to say the Mccarthys? You think too highly of me."
"Well, you have me, don't you? I will get rid of your mother's murderer in half a year at most. She will disappear forever from the world. If you need my help, just say the word," Joseph spoke with an arrogant and wild look. A rebellious spirit surged in his heart.
Waverly trod with caution. She did not dare to agree easily to his proposition. Joseph was not someone who would treat others well for free.
What he wanted was beyond her imagination.
"I can't confirm if you're telling the truth. What if you just want Melinda and I to quibble?" Waverly said cautiously.
"To investigate it is simple. You have a brother from the same mother, so you could go ahead and do the DNA test. As for whether Melinda was the murderer, you have to ask the people who participated in the murder in the past, those people around your mother," Joseph said with certainty.
Waverly was silent. She still took his words with a grain of salt. She would find out the truth. Not wanting to meet Joseph's gaze, she simply lowered her head and continued to eat.
However, she didn't have much appetite after the discussion. After just a few bites, she was satiated and put down her cutlery.
On the other hand, Joseph was ravishing his food. He glanced at her and asked, "Are you going to waste that? Give it to me then."
"No, I'll finish my food." Waverly answered immediately, without a single thought given to the matter.
Joseph raised his eyebrows and nodded. His mouth curled into a smile, and his eyes seemed to glint as he ate his dinner.
Waverly forced herself to finish her food. She felt uncomfortably bloated.
"You know what they say, take 100 steps after every meal and you'll live to be a hundred years old. Let's go. I'll take you around the manor. Don't forget to put on a coat. It may be warm inside here, but it's cold outside," Joseph advised. He then got up from the table and headed outside.
Waverly rubbed her belly. It was true that she had eaten too much. Walking around would help her digest the food. She followed suit behind Joseph.
Joseph carried her to the dressing room without further ado.
Once inside, Waverly put on her coat.
She was carried out by Joseph once more.
The snow was still falling. There was a thin layer of it on the leaves of the trees above. At first glance, the whole manor looked snow-white. It elicited a rustling sound when they trod on the ground. Footprints of dogs were visible in the snow.
She missed the two dogs in the President's Office. Unfortunately, she had left in a hurry, nor did she want to separate the two dogs, so she didn't bring either one of them with her.
When she returned tomorrow, she would take Hayley along to get a dog.
Joseph looked askance at her and chuckled. "What are you thinking about? Why are you so happy?"
Waverly's lips lifted slightly. "I thought you were an omniscient parasite inhabiting my brain."
"If I were omniscient, I wouldn't be a parasite but a God instead, you silly girl." Joseph grabbed her waist and pulled her to his side. "This manor is also mine. It's suitable for winter. The hot springs you went to today were modified from a natural source. Stay here in the winter, you won't catch a cold here."
"I won't catch a cold that easily! I'm in good health," Waverly pushed his arm away and tried to hide her hands from him.
"You say that, but your hands are freezing." He took her hand despite her efforts and put it into his pocket.
Waverly was not used to being so intimate with Joseph. She pulled out her hand, retorting, "I have my own pocket."
She stuffed her hand into her pocket.
Joseph's expression turned stony. "Bellamy's already 40, right? You're more than a dozen years younger than him. What does that old man like about you?"
"Huh, didn't you say before that you shouldn't look down on people, especially the successful ones?" Waverly used his words against him.
Joseph glanced away. "Do you still remember your father's departure on that snowy day?"
Waverly's eyes suddenly darkened. "I don't recall ever receiving any love from my family. None of that gave me warmth, anyway. To be exact, I don't think I've experienced that from romantic love or friendship either."
"What did Bellamy give you?" Joseph asked curiously.
At the mention of Bellamy, Waverly's expression naturally softened. She looked at the distant sky.
Bellamy had given her something beyond love, friendship, kinship, and even mentorship. He was her soul's pillar.
She remained silent. There was no need for Joseph to know that.
She and Joseph were like fire and water.
"I want to walk alone. May I?" Waverly said icily, gazing at Joseph as she did so.
Joseph raised his eyebrows and directed his gaze to the ground. After thinking for a moment, he nodded and walked towards the villa.
Waverly went under the trees, squatted down, and rolled the snow into a small ball.
Her hand was red from the cold, and she could feel a faint stinging pain.
She didn't listen to her body's signals, however. She continued rolling the ball around, so it became a much bigger snowball.
She piled up a snowman on her own without Bellamy's help. It was difficult, and it lacked enjoyment.
Then, her phone rang.
It was Bellamy. Waverly hesitated for a moment.
She had called him just now. It would be rude if she didn't answer the phone.
Waverly accepted the call, realized that Bellamy had sent an invitation for a video chat.
There Bellamy was on the screen.
He was wearing a beige crew neck shirt in his home, sitting in front of the desk and looking at her with concern.
"Where are you now? Are you alright?" Bellamy asked.
Hearing his caring words, her eyes were filled with a stinging sensation.
Bellamy was the only one who truly cared about her in the whole wide world.
She shook her head, "I'm fine, but I heard a rumor that I can't confirm. I'm going to investigate it. Melinda may not be my mother. If she's not, you could then sue the Mccarthys for a sham marriage."
"Wouldn't that affect you negatively?" Bellamy asked, his voice deep.
"How so?" Waverly smiled brightly. "I could change my appearance and identity. I could go to other countries to live a good life. You gave me so much money. Several lifetimes wouldn't be enough for me to finish spending it."
"Now, you could leave M Country and live a happy life again," Bellamy spoke in a low pitch.
Waverly realized that she had misspoken. "I still have some things to settle in M Country. After I've dealt with it, I will leave. Bellamy, I'm serious. If I could prove that I am not Melinda's daughter, would you go after the Mccarthys?"
"At that time, I suggested marrying you, your mother... I mean Melinda, she opposed, saying that you're not a member of the Mccarthys, but I insisted on marrying you. Your grandpa took you back. This won't be an issue because I was the one who wanted to marry you. But, they could argue that you had deliberately pretended to be a member of the Mccarthys to swindle your way into this marriage," Bellamy explained.
