Chapter 961 I Am His Girlfriend
"Well, then I won't try to lose any more weight. It's tiring anyway. Alright, see you then," Waverly excused herself.
"Bye," Bellamy replied, waiting for her to hang up.
On the other side, she also felt reluctant to hang up. Doing the same, she was waiting for him to hang up.
Seeing that he still didn't, she was afraid that he would ask more questions, which would make her feel more guilty. Finally, she pressed the red button on the screen.
After hanging up, the bright facade that she had on faded away.
When she stepped outside the room, Hayley was waiting for her by the door. It looked like she wanted to say something, but stopped on second thought.
"What is it? Just say it, it's fine. If it makes you feel uncomfortable on the inside, it's going to spill out in the future anyway," Waverly advised her calmly as she stepped outside.
"Madam, I don't think lying to the President is a good thing. You're obviously not happy," Hayley commented worriedly.
"It doesn't matter if I'm happy. At least I'm alive. What's more, being happy is a state of mind. Some people have everything, yet they feel miserable. Some people are genuinely happy, yet they barely have anything to live by. If we all lower our standards and expectations, then no one would be miserable," Waverly comforted her softly and smiled lightly.
She knew the methods towards tackling her thoughts. After all, Bellamy had taught her everything.
But sometimes, it wasn't because she didn't know how to; she just needed a bit of time to adjust her thoughts.
Hayley nodded understandingly. "Then, what about the guilt you feel for lying to the President?"
"There are two kinds of lies. One is to gain benefits and self-interests, and the other is to help others live better. If you lie to hurt others, then you need to reflect on yourself. However, if you lie for someone else's own good, it's actually a good thing. And there's no need to feel guilty for doing a good thing," Waverly consoled her.
After listening to her explanation, Hayley bowed her head slightly. She felt instantly enlightened by Waverly's words.
Soon, Waverly headed over to Thomson's place. When she arrived, he was still in a meeting. Feeling that it wasn't right for her to enter while he was busy, she made up her mind to head out and look around for a bit.
"Hey, isn't that Mrs. President?" Someone chided sarcastically.
Waverly turned around and was greeted by Joseph's mother, Giselle's emotionless face.
Giselle walked up to her and mocked, "You know well that the Mccarthy family doesn't like you. Even your own mother detests you, so why are you back?"
A flash of light flitted across Waverly's eyes. "Auntie Giselle, it's Joseph who asked me to return. He mentioned that it was better for me to come home after wandering outside for so long. After all, I am his girlfriend."
"What? Girlfriend? You are such a shameless little b*tch! You seduced your own uncle, and now you want to seduce your cousin?! You're a horrid woman!" Giselle cursed.
"Did I seduce him, or did he seduce me? Auntie Giselle, I think you'd better clarify this with him. I mean, you're not going to trust my words anyway," she replied calmly.
"You b*tch! My son is going to marry Madam Lenny's daughter soon. If you dare to say something like that again, I promise I'll tear your mouth apart." Giselle shouted furiously as she stomped off.
Hayley's face was filled with pity at this moment. If she'd argued and chimed in that it was Joseph who kidnaped Waverly several times, Giselle wouldn't believe her.
Hence, when she heard Waverly claim that she was Joseph's girlfriend, Hayley was utterly gutted.
She knew that Waverly didn't want it, and this was precisely why she was upset.
"Madam, why don't we ask the President for help? He'll definitely be able to save you." Hayley piped up as her heart ached with pain.
Waverly looked at her, and she could feel this girl's empathy for her.
"Hayley, let me confess something to you. I don't need someone to get me out of this, and I can leave anytime I want. The decision is in my hands, but I don't want to leave. If I never wanted to stay, I wouldn't have come back in the first place!" She responded firmly.
Hayley couldn't grasp Waverly's intentions. "Madam, are you really in love with Joseph?"
Waverly's eyes grew colder instantaneously. "I'll do what I want to do, and it doesn't matter if other people disapprove, as long as I know what's right. I'm going to meet Uncle Thomson later. Just wait for me outside. I'll be fine at his place, and he's on my side."
"Madam, how long will you take with Uncle Thomson? If it's going to be awhile, I'll go back to prepare your lunch and pick you up later."
"That's good too. You can go back and prepare lunch. However, you don't have to come and pick me up. They can't do anything to me in broad daylight," Waverly assured her softly.
"Alright then, I'll go back and prepare lunch for you. Once I'm done, I'll come back for you."
"Okay," Waverly answered.
Hence, Hayley headed back to prepare the food.
As Waverly exhaled deeply, she saw her breath form a fog and drift into the sky.
When she was a child, she would always observe her own breath whenever she exhaled during winter. Recalling one of her funniest memories, she remembered watching a show that was set in summer, yet the actors were huffing out fog when they spoke.
At that moment, she felt like the fog that came from their breaths. It was like others were manipulating her, and she was only vividly present in that moment.
Her gaze darkened progressively. There was an indescribable darkness in them.
A moment later, she spotted someone leaving Thomson's house.
"This won't work, she's the wife of the past president of A Country. We don't know where her heart truly belongs."
"Her reputation isn't good, her personality is eccentric, and she doesn't have any manners. I don't see any hope in her. I strongly object to your suggestion."
"Moreover, her last name is Martell, not Mccarthy. I think Thomson must've really lost his mind. Weldon's son is a far better choice. I think it's better for Joseph to lead this entire thing."
"Thomson is pretty good in all other aspects, but he's just too biased towards that girl. Alas."
Watching those people leave while shaking their heads and sighing, Waverly frowned and walked towards Thomson's house.
Most of the people who were there for the meeting had left, whereas Darius was the only one who remained behind. He poured a cup of water for Thomson.
Waverly knocked at the door before entering.
"Waverly, you came just in time. I have something to tell you," Thomson greeted her happily.
After eavesdropping on the conversation earlier, she had a rough idea of what he was going to say.
Her uncle was truly a saint.
"Starting next Monday, you can come to work in the project department of our Mccarthy family. I've temporarily arranged the position of financial assistant for you. If you aren't familiar with the job scope, you should learn from those above you and pass the required assessments. If you do well, I can appoint the whole financial department to you next year," Thomson added with a bright smile.
"Uncle, I know that you're doing this for my sake. You want me to remain within the Mccarthy family. I know you want to keep me occupied and earn a living, but this isn't good on your part," Waverly stated bluntly.
"What do you mean 'not good on my part'? It's a good thing. Is it wrong for me to arrange for someone to work at the company? When the rest gave their relatives a special pass inside, I didn't make a sound. Instead, I just turned a blind eye. Plus, you'll only be a tiny finance assistant. If I can't even make this happen, then I might as well quit as the boss," Thomson lamented, feeling slightly dissatisfied.
