Chapter 921 Little Did You Know
She stopped and looked back.
The two men wearing white masks were wearing large black raincoats. It was hard to tell what they looked like.
"If I die here in the Mccarthy family, what do you think people will say?" Waverly knew what was coming, so she warned harshly.
"We could just say that you, Miss Martell, couldn't stand the humiliation after returning, and you eventually took your own life. I think that this will save the Mccarthys from embarrassment," the masked man said coldly.
Waverly stared at them. Bellamy had taught her some self-defense skills. She was still confident if she was up against one person. However, it was a little difficult if she was going against two.
She didn't expect that they would be so flagrant to attack her when she was alone.
It was too late for any regret. All that was to do was to give them all she got.
"I'm going to die, anyway. Why don't you let me die with the truth? Who sent you? Was it Qianna?" Waverly asked, trying to stall for time, hoping the guards would realize.
"Leave your questions to when you rot in hell," The masked man said as he rushed towards Waverly.
Waverly aimed for his crotch with a kick. The man knew she was coming and he clamped Waverly's leg. Waverly took the opportunity to punch the man below his chin, right near his jugular.
Bellamy told her, as long as she hit this spot, the person would faint for a short time.
The masked man did not expect Waverly's move and fell to the ground. When the other person saw this, he did not dare underestimate her but stared cautiously at Waverly.
Waverly ran to the villa and shouted, "Hayley, Hayley."
The masked man immediately caught up with swift speed. Waverly couldn't outrun him. Seeing that she was about to get caught, she suddenly turned. The masked man could not stop in time and overtook Waverly.
Waverly exerted some force and pushed the masked man into the freezing lake.
The person who fainted came to his senses and became even angrier as he rushed toward Waverly.
Waverly continued to run forward until she reached her door. Just as she was about to open the door, she was grabbed by the whip of one of the masked men.
"Hayley, save me! Hayley!" Waverly shouted.
The masked man covered Waverly's mouth.
Waverly bit the masked man's hand. Seeing this, the other masked man shouted anxiously, "Hurry up and drown her."
All of a sudden, Hayley opened the window and jumped down from the second floor. She kicked the man, who was talking, into the river.
When the other man saw this, he immediately ran away.
As soon as the man who fell into the lake got up, Hayley held a knife at his neck.
Waverly took off the man's mask, revealing a familiar face, "Darius Zane."
He was Thomson's subordinate. Waverly was shocked when she saw him, "Did my uncle send you to kill me?"
"No, I'm the one who wants to kill you. Just kill me now," Darius spoke with full confidence.
Waverly squatted down beside him, "Mr. Zane, you're one of my uncle's men. Both of us know what kind of person my uncle is. What he hates most is playing dirty. He's a righteous and above-board man. I don't believe that he sent you here. However, if I hand you over, not only will I make things difficult for my uncle but also let others impeach him. I don't know why you're trying to kill me, but if you're really loyal to my uncle, you shouldn't be someone else's pawn."
Darius looked at Waverly in surprise. In his mind, Waverly was still a stubborn and willful little girl. However, now, she had become so mature and sensible. Moreover, she seemed to know everything, capable of controlling the big picture.
"Why did you come back?" Darius asked.
Waverly smiled slightly and looked at Darius deeply, "This is my home. Where else could I go if not here?"
"Bellamy probably gave you some money. After all, you saved him. You could go to another country to start a new life," Darius looked at Waverly suspiciously.
"Darius, I grew up here. You are not me. You don't understand my longing for this place. Besides, my mother is here too. It would be best if you leave now. I won't mention what happened today to anyone, but I also hope you won't continue to be someone else's pawn. It will make my uncle's heart ache," Waverly took the knife from Hayley's hand.
Darius stood up, "Your uncle didn't send me here. Miss Martell, you shouldn't have come back. Be careful."
After saying that, Darius scurried away quickly.
"Madam, I don't understand. We've got him. Why don't we hand him over to your uncle?" Hayley looked at Darius' back and said.
"Darius is loyal to my uncle. He is my uncle's right-hand man. My uncle, on the other hand, is an upright man. If I take him to my uncle, he will be severely punished. My uncle might even drive him away or send him to prison as a form of apology to me."
"That's because he deserved it. He was trying to kill you," Hayley was even more puzzled.
"This may be what the culprit wants. If Mr. Zane kills me, it eliminates me as the problem. He also has something on Mr. Zane; hence he has to work for that person. If Mr. Zane doesn't kill me and I, in turn, send him to my uncle, my uncle will personally break his arm. Doing this will disappoint the people under my uncle and make my uncle lose public favor," Waverly dissected.
Hayley understood, "What a diabolical scheme. Killing two birds with one stone."
"This time, I have made things clear for Mr. Zane. Now, he owes me a favor and he won't easily become someone else's pawn. On the contrary, he will have his reservations against the culprit."
"But he didn't tell us who the culprit was, did he?" Hayley said in disappointment.
Waverly smiled slightly, "The person who could incite Mr. Zane must have high prestige in the Mccarthys. Qianna is not up to that standard. Besides, there are only a few people who have such power in the family. We can use the art of elimination. First, this person is against my uncle. Second, his purpose is clear. Third, doing this benefits the person. It's either Joseph's mother, Joseph's father, or uncle."
"Madam, why them?" Hayley asked curiously.
"If the goal of those people is to alienate me, it wouldn't be easy for me to figure it out because most of them, if not all, are alienating me. However, alienating my uncle has something to do with power. Uncle and Joseph are enemies. Joseph wouldn't kill me. If that's the case, the people around Joesph are the ones who are more likely to kill me."
"Madam, you are so smart. Just like..." Hayley suddenly stopped. She was about to mention the President, but the President had warned her against revealing her identity. She then said with a smile, "We have a commander-in-chief who is as smart as you are. I admire her very much."
"Let's go back to rest. Since those people want to kill me, we have to be very careful from now on," Waverly reminded.
"But we're showing weakness if we only take defense and no offense," Hayley said in frustration.
The corner of Waverly's mouth lifted. Since she had decided to return, she had her own plans in mind.
