Chapter 853 I Can Die For You Without Any Regrets
"Mr. Yaleman has asked you to change your clothes, and we will help you to do your makeup," the head housemaid said politely.
Eli was uneasy. She looked around and asked, "Where's Reuben?"
"Mr. Reuben is busy with other things. Please change your clothes, Miss Wayne. Please don't make things difficult for us," the head housemaid said with a smile.
Eli saw that there were too many of them. She would be embarrassed if they were to force her to do what they said. Hence, she got up as the maid came over to help her undress.
Eli felt extremely awkward, but there was nothing she could do to block them as she only had one arm.
She was wrestled into a white dress and a dark blue windbreaker.
They sat her down on the chair, applied makeup on her face, manicured her nails, and styled her hair. After half an hour, they brought Eli over to the mirror next to the French windows.
Eli gazed at her fashionably-dressed self in the mirror. She was as thin as a pole, like those skinny models, which seemed to be the standard of beauty these days. Having put on the right makeup and clothes, she looked very classy, refined, and graceful.
Sean strode into the room and glanced at Eli in the mirror. He approached her, placed his arms around her waist, and pulled her into his embrace. Then, he bent down and kissed her on the ear.
Eli did not react and just stared at the mirror blankly.
"What's on your mind?" Sean asked softly.
"I have a feeling that time is wasting away in the mirror," Eli mumbled.
In the mirror, he was handsome and she was beautiful. Standing together, they looked like a perfect couple. But in reality, they were both covered in wounds of hatred and greed.
"Let's go," Sean took her hand and walked to the door.
She had been in this villa for a long time, but most of the time, she was either in a coma or sick in bed. Hence, she was neither familiar with this place, nor did she like it.
It took them ten minutes to walk to the entrance of the villa. More than a dozen cars were waiting orderly at the entrance.
"Do you need that many people to protect you every time you go out?" Eli asked curiously.
"Yes," Sean answered.
"God really is fair. The poor have no money, but they have their freedom. You are rich and powerful, yet you're restricted and you can't sleep well either," Eli said with a sigh.
Sean opened the car door. He looked at Eli and said, "I will sleep well in the future, and you will be buried with me when I die."
Eli fell silent.
Why did those words sound so horrifying? Fortunately, she did not fear death.
She got into the car and looked out of the window while Sean sat next to her.
Eli did not speak a word. She was unusually quiet.
"You used to be very talkative before. There wasn't a moment when you would quiet down," Sean said with a sigh.
Eli replied with a chuckle, "Am I not allowed some personal growth? I'm a very dignified person now."
"You?" said Sean as he laughed.
His laughter sounded sarcastic to her.
Eli laughed in exaggeration.
Sean stopped laughing and asked, "Didn't you just say that you're dignified now?"
Eli became silent again.
She was indeed undignified. She was not even close to being dignified. However, at this moment, she just wanted to argue with him. "I could be as prim and proper as a maiden, yet, I am also agile like a hare. I think that I'm quite perfect," Eli said cheekily.
"A perfect woman with a missing arm?" Sean teased.
"Well, isn't the Venus de Milo still beautiful even without any arms?" Eli retorted.
"Only the second half of what you said is true for you," Sean said brusquely.
Eli was furious.
She knew that she was not beautiful in Sean's eyes. Now, she was old, ugly, and had lost an arm. She could not compare to his beautiful and younger girlfriend, who had a perfect figure.
Was the reason he insisted on marrying her was to irritate her?
He'd better believe that she would rile him up even more!
"What exactly do you mean by that?" Eli asked, glaring.
"You know that I didn't mean anything by it, so don't be impulsive next time. You wouldn't have lost your arm if you hadn't been impulsive," Sean said in admonishment.
"You have already made me wish that I was dead rather than alive. It's not a big deal to have lost an arm now," Eli responded. Her heart turned cold when she thought of how his sarcastic look earlier.
Sean's face also turned frosty as he said in an unusual tone, "The only thing you remember is my bad side."
Eli looked out of the window because she no longer wanted to argue with him. After all, she was not as eloquent as him, so she could not win an argument against him at all.
Truth be told, she did not want to remember the unpleasant things. She would only feel uneasy if she were to remember them.
She wanted to strive to be the happiest in this lifetime. She yearned to be happy after having a tasty meal. She wanted to be excited for the scenery, to immerse herself in novels and TV series. She longed to be invested in the lives of other people and to become a sensitive yet detached spectator.
Neither of them had spoken a word as time went by.
Sean was watching Eli while clasping her left hand.
Eli glanced at him from the corner of her eye.
Sean did not speak. He merely stared fixedly at her, as though he had said a lot. However, Eli did not understand his gaze. She did not like to speculate because it was very draining. She preferred him to be more direct. "What's wrong?"
"I was really furious at that time. That's why I made you wish you were dead rather than alive," Sean explained.
"Aren't you angry now?" Eli asked.
"No, I'm not angry anymore. I've been thinking about it for a long time. I asked myself if I wanted to be with you. I realized that we can't be together if I continue being angry at you. You can be well-tempered, but you chose to be stubborn. Therefore, I'm the only one who has to compromise if I want this relationship," Sean said seriously.
Looking away, Eli lowered her head and fell deep in thought.
Sean was worried. It seemed that she was going to reject him even after thinking about it. His heart was twisted into a knot as he had the intuition that he would be rejected again. "Anyway, we are married now. Just don't betray me in the future."
"Could we keep our marriage a secret?" Eli looked up at him and enquired.
"Fine," Sean replied.
"I hope that the people in your villa don't know about it as well."
"That's impossible. There were more than twenty people who came by today."
"Could you keep the secret from them? Only you and I will know that we are married," Eli said solemnly.
Sean didn't say anything. He looked at Eli's concerned expression and asked, "What is worrying you?"
"I'm worried that I would fall into disappointment one day. You have too many admirers. If one day, you do not wish for me to be with you anymore, I will become the target of public criticism," Eli said with a bitter smile.
"But weren't you the one who had always avoided me?" Sean said in a low voice, with sadness in his eyes.
Eli's heart ached even more when she saw the look in his eyes. She frowned and turned her face away.
She remembered that time when he lost everything. He had looked at her with such poignant eyes too. His gaze was a mix of sadness, longing, love, deep affection, helplessness, reluctance, worry, as well as distress, regret, and gentleness.
She would die for him without any regrets just from this gaze of his. It was also because of this gaze that she survived in spite of the extreme torment she endured in his hands.
