Chapter 849 Waiting
She was too selfish in the past. She didn't want Sean and her child to be in danger. Even though Haward was locked up, she refused to reveal the secret which eventually led to his death.
Now, was she going to let her selfishness be the cause of someone else's death again?
No, it was a mistake. If she were to reveal it now, the death of countless lives would have been in vain.
She couldn't be selfish anymore. She had to hold on with perseverance.
Eli replied nonchalantly. "Yes."
Sean's expression changed. "Sit down and have some breakfast."
Eli thought for a moment, pulled out a chair, and sat down.
Sean glanced at Reuben, who then motioned the chefs to serve breakfast.
He prepared a cup of milk and pancakes. The pancakes were wrapped nicely so she wouldn't need cutlery. She could just use her hands.
Eli wasn't familiar with using cutlery on her left hand. It was much more convenient to use her hands.
She hadn't eaten proper food for a long time. She took a bite and slowly chewed on it.
Sean noticed that she didn't seem to be enjoying her food so he asked, "Does it not taste good?"
"It's not bad," Eli replied.
"What do you want to have for breakfast tomorrow? I'll get the chef to prepare them. I'll ask them to make blueberry waffles for you. I remember you used to like those," Sean said.
Eli didn't know what to say.
It was true that she used to be a foodie. However, she seemed to have lost her appetite ever since she was locked up in that cave. She only managed to eat two mouthfuls before her stomach started churning. She stopped eating and drank a few mouthfuls of milk.
Sean glanced at the pancake on her plate and told the chef, "Make some blueberry waffles right now. Be sure to add more blueberries."
"Yes," The chef nodded and left.
"I have contacted a few foreign specialists who said that they could install an artificial limb for you. With the advancement of technology, they could make it look just like a real hand. The micro-electric currents will be able to generate neuron transmissions stimulating the nerves. With practice, you'll be able to live like an ordinary person, although it might not feel as flexible," Sean said.
Eli looked at the empty socket of her right arm. "There's no need. I'm already used to living without my arm."
"Are you used to living without your arm or are you trying to use it as a reminder of my cruelty and ruthlessness towards you?" Sean asked coldly as he stared at her, "I remember you like being pretty."
Eli smiled and leaned against the chair lazily. "When I was twenty, I like being pretty. Now, I am already thirty-five, I'm not that picky anymore. Moreover, I am not rejecting an artificial limb to remind myself of your cruelty and ruthlessness. What I want to remember are the mistakes I've made, my selfishness, and my guilt."
"I have already forgiven you."
Eli smiled.
She had always felt sorry towards Sean. After all, he lost his position as President partly because of her. Nonetheless, she did not feel that she owed him.
Her parents were killed because of her mistakes. Haward was killed because of her selfishness.
"I can't forgive myself," Eli said with tears in her eyes.
"I'll take you to see the doctor after we're done with breakfast. This is an order, not a question. You've not had an arm for a few months now, so your nerves might not be as sensitive anymore. You'll have to go through a series of treatments before the installation and it may hurt a little. Please bear with it, it'll take some time to customize your arm, but they promised to do within a month."
"It's an order, huh?" Eli stopped talking. She lowered her head, she didn't feel like drinking the milk anymore. She dipped her finger in water and began drawing circles on the table.
Sean furrowed his brows and looked deeply into her eyes. Confused, he asked, "Our son said that you've been ignoring him for many years and that he hasn't seen you. Would you like to see him?"
Eli shook her head. It was true that she hadn't seen her son for many years.
She probably wouldn't miss him that much if they didn't meet. It would be pointless even if they did meet.
She was just an ant.
"You don't even want to see your own son!" Sean shouted.
Eli looked at him. "I haven't seen him for a long time, and he knows everything that I've done in the past. He probably believes that I've abandoned him. Do you think that he'll want to see me?"
"Didn't you say that you wanted repentance? The child is still young, and he forgets easily. If you are good to him now, he will see that. If you don't see him or treat him well now, he will hate you for life. Do you want him to hate you that long?" Sean said coldly.
She didn't want to, but it's not as if she had a choice. When Hodge and his men saw her alive, they didn't take any further action because Sean was torturing her. If they knew that he had allowed her to be in contact with her child, she was afraid that they would do something terrible.
"I'm too embarrassed to meet him in the state I am in now," Eli said ambiguously.
Sean seemed convinced and he replied, "I see."
Meanwhile, the chef had brought out a fresh tray of waffles. She took two bites, but she had no appetite. She took a third bite forcefully and then she didn't feel like eating anymore.
Sean was displeased. "Why do you eat so little?"
"Maybe because I haven't eaten for a long time, my stomach isn't really used to it," Eli explained.
He had planned to prepare dinner for her the night before, but she had pissed him off. His temper triumphed over his wishes.
"I'll ask them to prepare some soup for lunch then," Sean said.
Eli nodded.
Sean brought her out shortly after and they got into the same car.
She looked out the window. The sunlight felt good as it shone on her, making her feel listless.
She didn't want to talk to Sean, so she simply closed her eyes, quietly enjoying the moment of peace.
Sean looked at her faintly. His heart tightened when he saw the white strands in her hair.
They had known each other since they were ten, and they had just turned thirty-five. He wanted to give them both a chance after twenty years of separation and reconciliation; though he was afraid that she didn't love him enough. He couldn't stand another betrayal. He might go crazy and do something terrible if that were to happen again.
They seemed to arrive at their destination an hour later. The guard opened the door and Sean got out of the car. Immediately, someone came over holding a black umbrella. A group of people stood guard beside him, the surroundings were barricaded securely.
Eli pushed the door open and got down herself, watching him being escorted by the crowd. His aura seemed to glow stronger than when he was President. He had also become a lot meaner.
She lowered her head and followed behind him.
Sean suddenly stopped, and she almost bumped into him. She raised her head to look at him.
"Why are you walking so slowly? Am I here to see the doctor or are you? Besides, why do you look so unhappy?" Sean looked at her face and asked.
Yes. Why was she unhappy?
She had told herself not to be pessimistic.
"You're so much taller than me, of course, you'll walk faster than me. When you take three steps, I would've only taken two," Eli explained.
"Stop giving excuses and follow me closely. If you can't, then you'll have to bear the consequences," Sean warned. He walked in front, but it was clear that he had slowed down.
Eli quickened her pace. All of a sudden, she saw a dark shadow looming at the corner. Was there something there?
She noticed a figure flashing by when she tried to take a closer look.
To her surprise, the figure reappeared. This time, it walked out from the shadows, gesturing her to wait.
