Chapter 914 You're My Woman

Waverly looked at the expressionless faces of the men in black. She couldn't tell who had sent them.
From the moment she set foot on the land of M Country, her battle had begun rolling.
"Do I have the right to refuse?" Waverly retorted.
"No," the men in black replied bluntly.
Waverly shrugged. "Let's go then."
She got into the car where the men in black came from. They took her luggage, as if they were afraid that she would run away. Sandwiching her were two men.
Couldn't be bothered to resist, she shut her eyes to take a nap.
Half an hour later, the car stopped. Waverly opened her eyes to see the car stopping at a large gate for inspection.
This place wasn't the Mccarthys'. Given how heavily guarded it was, it should be Joseph's new residence.
After a while, the car drove in and pulled up in front of a villa.
The men in black opened the car door.
Waverly got out of the car.
The men in black knocked on the door respectfully.
"Come in," a voice said from within.
The men in black opened the door.
Waverly saw Joseph sitting in front of a dining table.
He was wearing a beige V-necked shirt, brown pants, and a khaki windbreaker. He stared at her and said, "Take a seat, you must be hungry. I've prepared dinner for you. I think that they're all your favorite."
Waverly pulled out a chair and settled down opposite him.
The table was very long, separating them in a distance about two meters apart.
Waverly lowered her head and ate her dinner. She knew that Joseph was eyeing her. Without so much as a word, she let him to his scrutiny. It was deadly quiet as if she was the only one in this space.
"I've watched your live broadcast," Joseph spoke up.
Waverly didn't raise her head. "A live broadcast is for everyone to see. I'm not surprised that you've seen it. Did the outcome live up to your expectation?"
"You may not have lost. As long as you press on, you'll still gain a lot of supporters."
"So," Waverly paused and slowly looked at Joseph straight in the eye. "This divorce was entirely my choice. Would you believe it?"
"Why? Not everyone can be Mrs. President. Being the President's wife comes with endless honor and convenience at hand. You shouldn't have given up so easily," Joseph said.
Waverly slightly smirked. "I remember telling you that Bellamy and I have never consummated our marriage. I've thought about it. Instead of staying in that gilded cage, it's better for me to escape from it and put my life on the line."
"Didn't Bellamy arrange for you to live abroad? He should've given you enough money to let you start a new life, not for you to come back to M Country alone," Joseph wondered.
Waverly picked up a glass of red wine on the table and shook it gently. "He's no longer with me. Do you think that our love is deep enough now for him to help me do all of that? You must have thought too much."
"You should know clearly the reason you want to come back to M Country. Now that you're back, Qianna will not let you go," Joseph warned.
Waverly took a sip of red wine and asked calmly, "Did you invite me to dinner because you wanted to know why I came back?"
"Actually, I also wanted to save your life. Qianna's people were already on their way before I stepped in. What do you think will happen if you were to be taken by her first?" Joseph explained.
"I've always felt that it's taxing talking to you. Every word of yours sounds like a trap, waiting for someone to fall into. It's very hard to talk to you, let alone guess, assess, and judge your words. Later, you'll say that you like me, but I won't see any reason you would. Okay, do you want to know what would unfold if she took me back first? It's very simple. I think her people should be outside your doorstep now. After I finish eating and go out, she'll naturally take me away. You'll find out in no time." Waverly finished the wine and set down the glass.
"Aren't you afraid of dying? Or did you return to seek death?" Joseph narrowed his eyes, a ray of silver light flashing across them.
Waverly curled up the corners of her mouth and said, "Whether it was me or her who dies, you'll soon know. I'm all satiated. If you will excuse me."
"Waverly, I want to save you," Joseph said calmly.
"Marry me then. If I marry you, with your current status in the Mccarthy family, no one will dare to lay a hand on me," Waverly said expressionlessly, a hint of firmness stark in her eyes.
Joseph was an ambitious man. Based on his current goals, he wouldn't marry her.
"I'll soon marry Madam Lenny's daughter. If you'd like, I'll transfer this villa to you. If you stay by my side, I'll protect you for the rest of my life," Joseph promised.
"Do I have to sleep with you?" Waverly asked bluntly.
"You're my woman," Joseph said.
Waverly smiled. She propped her chin with her left hand and beheld Joseph. "So... you want me to be your mistress then? Give me three months to think about it."
Joseph felt that she was different from before. In the past, she was smart but she would betray all her thoughts on her face. Now, she was still smart, but he couldn't figure out what she was thinking at that moment.
"You may choose to stay here for the next three months," Joseph said. "I promise no one will be able to hurt you."
"I wouldn't have come back if I was afraid of being hurt. Actually, I really wanted to meet my aunt. It's been five years and she's still none the wiser, sowing seeds of trouble in her wake. Grandpa must be really worried to death, right?" Waverly asked with starry eyes.
She was like a sly fox.
"Why, for God's sake, did you come back?" Joseph asked back.
Waverly stood up grinning. "I don't want my life to become dull and insipid. I'll be leaving now. Please have someone send me to the door."
"Waverly, don't make any half-baked decisions. I know that you're not willing to be framed, but it has already happened. You have to think about your future instead of destroying yourself," Joseph warned.
"I'll think about it. Don't worry. After experiencing so much hardship, I'm sure that good times will follow," Waverly said while still grinning, and then she turned around to look out of the window. "I should go now. If I don't, it'll be dark, and I'll get lost on the way home."
Joseph rushed over and clutched Waverly's waist. He pulled her into his arms and said with pity in his eyes, "From now on, this place is your home."
Waverly leaned on him and looked out in the distance beyond the window. "When I was a child, you often told me that this isn't my home and to get out of your house."
"You know how naive kids could be. Why would you still begrudge me until now?" Joseph's voice was hoarse.
"You deliberately broke Grandpa's favorite vase and pinned the blame on me. The maid was afraid that you'd be punished and therefore, unwilling to disclose the truth. I told Grandpa that you did it, but he doted on and trusted you the most. He asserted that it was me who did it. He beat me up and threw me out of the house. My mother didn't care about me. She wanted me dead and my father had to take me back," Waverly said softly. She said it matter-of-factly as if she was narrating someone else's story.
"At that time, every single one of your grades was better than mine. I was worried that Grandpa would value you more than I did. It's all in the past now. Let's wipe the slate clean and bury the past. From now on, you're my woman. Our children will definitely be smarter than both of us." Joseph looked down on her and kissed her on the face...
