Chapter 979 You're No Match

Waverly ignored her and walked toward the first conference room. She saw that there were already a few people waiting inside.
She knocked on the door of the room.
"Come in," a sweet voice said.
Waverly pushed the door open and stepped in.
There were two women and three men inside. One of the women looked at Waverly with a smile and introduced herself respectfully, "I'm Sasa. This is Yasmine Filthy, who's in charge of diplomatic affairs."
The name 'Yasmine Filthy' suddenly flashed across her mind.
Subconsciously, Waverly's eyes turned towards Yasmine. This woman was Joseph's fiancée and Madam Lenny's daughter.
Her makeup was exquisite and she gave off an elegant and serene air. Her entire outfit from head to toe consisted of designer brands. She felt as mature as any grown woman, yet as youthful and cocky as a young girl.
Her cold eyes swept across Waverly's face as she said rudely, "All of us had to wait just for you. Don't take your own sweet time in the future. You should've been here half an hour earlier."
"I'm sorry," Waverly lowered her eyes.
"I heard that you skipped work even on the first day. I know that you're a member of the Mccarthy family and also the President's ex-wife, but you shouldn't take advantage of that. You should know very well that you're just an assistant at the Ministry of External Affairs now. You can choose to not accept the job, but since you already have, please respect your current work and your colleagues," Yasmine scolded.
Waverly did not refute, nor did she have the right to refute.
Everything that Yasmine had pointed out was right.
She had indeed skipped her first day of work.
"Do you understand?" Yasmine barked.
Waverly clenched her fists and said, "I understand."
Yasmine's eyes were pointed to a chair in the corner of the room, "Take a seat."
Waverly found her seat and sat down.
Yasmine's sharp eyes swept over Waverly's face as she explained, "Today's meeting is about welcoming Mr. Bellamy Chuck, the president of A Country. Mr. Chuck will arrive in M Country the day after tomorrow and will continue to stay on for 2 to 3 days. Do you have any suggestions on his itinerary?"
Everyone in the room had their eyes fixed on Waverly.
Waverly remained silent.
Yasmine proceeded to glance at Waverly unhappily, "Don't you have anything to say?"
"He's been in contact with me and has voiced an interest in culinary," Waverly forced herself to speak.
"There's a lot of delicious food in our country. Does he wish to eat anything in particular?" Sasa asked.
"Some pork chops, dumplings and cabbage with pork. He didn't mention anything else."
"Why don't we invite a few famous chefs to hold a competition and let Mr. Chuck be the judge. On one hand, we can promote the delicacies of our country. On the other hand, it'll be pretty interesting to watch," someone suggested.
"We can arrange that into the itinerary. Are there any other suggestions?" Yasmine asked.
Everyone's eyes fell on Waverly again.
Waverly was still silent, not speaking.
Yasmine furrowed her brows, "I didn't summon all of you here just to listen to my orders. Ten heads are better than one. Why is no one saying anything? If all of you aren't going to say anything, what's the point of you being here?"
"Yes, yes. Well, does Mr. Chuck have any other hobbies?" someone asked Waverly.
"He has a wide range of hobbies. They cover all the way from astronomy to geography. He knows everything about all five continents and is up to date with the latest news," Waverly replied.
"So, you're saying that we don't need to arrange anything for him?" Yasmine retorted sarcastically.
"That's not what I meant," Waverly answered directly.
"The reason you're here is that you're obviously familiar with the president of A Country. I had hoped you could come to the meeting and help contribute. However, that obviously isn't happening. If you're no help to us, then I think there's no need for you to participate in this welcoming reception," Yasmine said bluntly.
Sensing the rising tension in the room, Sasa grew anxious and interjected with a smile, "It's not like she isn't any help. She did suggest the food competition. Apart from that, do you have any better suggestions?"
"Not at the moment..." Waverly paused. "Our country is known for our infantry. If it's possible, why don't we arrange for him to have an introduction to that? What do you think?"
"That's a good idea," someone whispered.
Yasmine had her eyes locked on Waverly as she asked, "In addition to the above two points, do you have any other good suggestions?"
Waverly shook her head.
"If I were to ask you to join the reception party, do you think you'll be capable of doing so?" Yasmine asked in a cold voice.
Waverly smiled slightly and looked Yasmine in the eye, "If I said I was, you're not going to believe me. If you give me the task, I'll try my best. If you don't, then there's nothing I can do. I'm just a small assistant, after all. I know my place. Like you've said, I have to be self aware, don't I?"
"It's good that you realized that you were in the wrong. Then, let me make this clear to you. I don't think you're capable of the job. All you're capable of doing is bringing the country to shame. Now, please leave the room. We don't need you here anymore," Yasmine said coldly.
"No, Miss Filthy..." Sasa intervened.
Yasmine shot her a stern glare, "Do I not have the right to ask her to leave?"
"No, it's just that Mr. Harington has specifically requested for Waverly to take part in this. We have to take into account that the higher-ups have requested for her," Sasa said while looking somewhat guilty.
"What do you mean by that? Why is someone else dictating what the Ministry of External Affairs do? What does Mr. Harrington mean by this? Did he even discuss that with me? Did he even seek my approval? Also, who allowed someone who skipped out on the first day of work to continue working here?" Yasmine shut her down.
Every single word she uttered sent a shiver right down Waverly's spine.
From the start to the end, Waverly had stayed silent.
Yasmine glanced at Waverly, "You're still here. Do you need me to call for someone to carry you out?"
Waverly, expressionless, stood up and walked toward the door. As she passed Yasmine, she stopped and looked her in the eye. "You can't even differentiate between your priorities. I wonder how you've even ended up in the position you are in today."
"What did you say?" Yasmine slammed her hand on the table and stood up from her seat. Her eyes widened as she glared at Waverly furiously.
"If you can't understand what I'm saying, I can explain it to you. What's the goal of the Ministry of External Affairs?" Waverly asked.
Yasmine retorted, "To maintain the friendly relations between countries, to solve disputes between countries, to promote the friendly development of countries, to maintain the enterprises of countries and to ensure the country prospers. What do you mean by asking me these questions?"
"Since it's Mr. Harington who has given the command, then the king must've decreed it. Or maybe, the president of A Country has personally requested this."
"Whether he intends to meet me to reminisce about the past or to embarrass me, at the end of the day, the fact remains that he wants me there.
"Here you are, disobeying his orders. Do you call this maintaining friendly relations between countries?
"In addition, you going against Mr. Harington's order will drag the whole Ministry of External Affairs down with you."
"You, a person who doesn't know the goal of the ministry, are trying to take charge here. Is it wrong for me to question your intentions?"
"Have I still not made myself clear?" Waverly said steadily.
