Chapter 895 How Was The Taste?
"I was afraid that you'd leave, so I took that as a justification. You're very special to me, to the extent that I can't look at any other woman but you. Waverly, in the past, I couldn't give you happiness, but I can now," Lenold said excitedly.
"I'm not interested in men who compartmentalize sex and love. Besides, I have someone I like. Who knows, maybe I'll be with him." Waverly grimaced.
"Who? Your husband? I'd like to see which he'll pick; power or you," Lenold said confidently.
Waverly knew Bellamy wasn't in it for the power, but for Stella.
Everything he did, he was doing it for Stella.
"It's not him that I like," Waverly replied, her voice heavy.
"If it's not him, then who? Who?!" Lenold was ruffled.
"Once I become his wife, you'll know who he is," Waverly replied.
"Woof."
She was startled to hear the dog bark. Hanging up the phone, she turned back.
Only to see Bellamy put down a basket with two black and white puppies leaping out of it. They were bouncing around, cute as they could be.
At this point, Waverly's heart was racing with panic. She wondered when Bellamy had shown up and how much he had heard of the conversation.
As she surveyed his face, he gave her a smile. There was nothing out of the ordinary.
Maybe he hadn't heard the conversation, or maybe he simply didn't care. A disheartened feeling lingered in her mind. Then, she averted her eyes and crouched down.
The puppies immediately dashed towards her and spun at her feet.
Waverly recognized that these were the puppies she had seen at Stella's place. She asked, seemingly casual, "Did you go to Southern Bay early in the morning?"
"Yeah, you were drunk yesterday and I forgot to bring the puppies back, so I went to ask for them today. If I only took one of them, it would be too lonely, so I asked for two," Bellamy explained.
Stella's puppies were very well behaved. As Waverly scratched the white puppy's neck, it wagged its tail in joy.
As for the black puppy, it was aware of being out of favor and ran off to play in the snow.
When the white puppy saw that the other puppy was having fun, it barked twice and followed suit.
Waverly stood up and gazed over the puppies. "What are their names?"
"We could give them new names," Bellamy said softly, raising a smile again.
Waverly didn't speak.
Although she'd managed to get the dogs, she and Bellamy would soon be divorced. Should she take the dogs with her then, or just one?
Waverly would be navigating dangerous waters of life from then on. She shouldn't take any of the puppies. If she couldn't take care of it, she shouldn't let it suffer with her.
Since they were destined to be separated, she didn't want to wallow in any melodramatic emotions. After all, the more she thought about it, the more she found it a feat to let go. She should have known better than to ask Stella for these puppies.
Bellamy noticed that Waverly was silent, and he slowly looked at her from the corner of his eyes. "Have you thought of any name yet?"
"You think of one," Waverly replied a few simple words before heading towards the room.
Bellamy's eyes sank and he grabbed her arm. As soon as he realized that his impulsivity had got the better of him, he let go and smiled. "Since you like the white puppy, why don't you name it? I'll name the other one."
Waverly looked at the white puppy, "Let's call it Snowy. Snowy, as in snow."
The corners of Bellamy's mouth twitched.
How could he not understand what she meant?
Amid the snow, they'd be going their separate ways.
He didn't like the name. But since she picked it, Snowy it was.
"The black puppy will be called Knight," Bellamy said.
Waverly giggled. Knight was a name that fit a gentleman's style. "Are you hungry? I got up late today and haven't had time to buy groceries. There are some burritos leftover in the fridge. I'll heat them up for you. Are you staying for dinner tonight?"
"Sure. Let's build a snowman this afternoon," Bellamy said.
Elated, Waverly smiled. She had to try committing this scene in her mind, for she would have to rely on it as a sustenance for years to come.
Just as Waverly was heating up the burritos, an unexpected guest appeared in the house.
Although she didn't know the man, she could see that he treated Bellamy with respect.
"Sean did come to A Country. He's with Eli right now. I tracked down their current address through Eli's gaming account. When are we going to make a move?" Quill Lowell reported.
A creature of habit, Bellamy twisted his ring and looked at Quill, his expression unreadable. "There's no need to make a move. They won't let him go."
"Are we not going to do anything then?" Quill wondered aloud.
"We are. I'll meet him tomorrow morning. Be sure to arrange everything for me. Don't make any rash moves, just follow my orders," Bellamy said solemnly.
Waverly knew that Bellamy wouldn't make a move because Sean was only here to see Eli. Instead, he was worried that Stella would get angry if he made a move.
She was thinking of doing it herself, but then, she momentarily remembered what Stella had said.
Eli and Sean were also forced to be apart. Over the five years they had been apart, she had been put under inhuman experience and soon developed very severe depression.
Now the love of her life had finally returned to see her.
It would have been unfair to Eli if Waverly were to take a shot. Perhaps she couldn't bear to do it because they shared a similar life. But at the same time, she blamed herself.
Waverly thought to herself, "Waverly, if you were to remain kind, how could you protect yourself and those you cared about?" Just once. Let her be the old Waverly just once more before she vowed to shed her old skin.
She wouldn't be as soft-hearted and kind anymore. She'd banish herself to a life that knew no shame and scruples.
After the burritos were ready, she served them to Bellamy without asking anything. "I'll get the sauce for you."
"Okay." Bellamy went to the bathroom to wash his hands. When he came out, Waverly had the sauce all ready to go.
Bellamy dipped the burrito in some of the sauce. "Mmm, this is decent. Is this seafood sauce?"
"Mmm mmm, it's my secret ingredient. When I used to go to the barbecue, I found that the sauce tasted better if I spread a layer of minced garlic underneath. Since we happened to have bacon in the fridge, I spread the garlic on the bottom. Then, I grilled the bacon and dripped its juices into the sauce. As a result, the sauce becomes extra fragrant," Waverly explained.
"You'd be a great cook," Bellamy complimented.
"Maybe I'd actually be a cook," Waverly joked.
With only the two in the house, it was a rare opportunity. They were like a real married couple, only the difference was that they hadn't consummated it.
"Bellamy, what would you like to eat tonight?" Waverly asked.
"There is this one time when I had just finished a mission and was starving. I had a poke bowl at M Country. The taste still lingers in my memory. And even though I've eaten it in other countries later, it wasn't as good as the one in M Country. When I visited that restaurant after a while, it was already out of business. Do you know how to make it?" It was the first time that Bellamy had said this to her.
"I do. But before I make one for you, you should hear me out first." Putting down her cutlery, Waverly was in a serious mode.
