Chapter 937 Nothing Matters

The assistants busied themselves. They mainly dealt with domestic diplomats. Some of them would go abroad to handle foreign affairs that the country was concerned with, as well as some trivial matters for the logistics department. There were also some diplomats stationed abroad in various embassies.
M Country was a neutral country. There were embassies for nearly every country there. The Minister of Foreign Affairs had great power over the foreign aid that M Country received. It was also Madam Lenny's selling point.
After Waverly saw the news, she went out to make a phone call to Bellamy.
There was a beeping sound from the other end of the phone. The line wouldn't connect.
The deputy minister walked into the assistants' office with a reluctant expression, saying to them, "A riot has broken out in Z Country; the Lancaster Army rebelled. I need an assistant to come with me to Z Country. Any volunteers?"
"Oh heavens, a riot? We might die if we go! I won't go."
"Our country has always been on good terms with Z Country, right? Why do we need to conduct negotiations?" One of the assistants asked in confusion.
"You know that we have a good relationship with the people in power in Z Country. But now, the Lancaster Army has surrounded M Country's embassy there. Therefore, we need to get a new diplomat to negotiate with them. It's a dangerous task, with a reward upon completion. Who's volunteering?" The deputy minister asked again.
Waverly entered and heard what the deputy minister had said. Without a second thought, she said bluntly, "I'll go."
The assistants swiveled their heads to look at her. One of them, a short-haired girl, pursed her lips in disdain and said, "It's your first day here, and you're already showing off."
Waverly looked sharply at the girl who was speaking. "I'm not showing off. You know what, why don't you go? I'll let you have the opportunity."
The girl's face immediately turned pale. "I have a husband and a kid. I'm not single like you are. I can't do whatever I want."
"Then shut your trap," Waverly said icily.
The short-haired girl did not say anything further. She just rolled her eyes.
"Give me your ID. You are to go immediately. You have two hours to head home and pack," the deputy minister said.
"Okay." Waverly handed her ID card to him. She took her bag out, went downstairs, and walked out of the building.
"Wait a minute." The deputy minister ran to catch up with her.
Waverly looked at him in confusion.
Her ID card was given back to her. The deputy minister said, "Owing to some special circumstances, you can't go to Z Country."
"Why?" Waverly was unnerved.
"There's no reason for it. It's an order from my superiors. Maybe it's because it's your first day at work, you don't have enough experience for it," he replied. Then, he turned around and went back into the building.
Waverly was rooted to the spot with the ID card in her hand, stunned. His superiors? Was he talking about Joseph?
Furious, she called Joseph.
Joseph didn't pick up. He hung up right away.
Waverly's temper flared. She called again, but this time, Joseph's phone had already been turned off.
Now she was certain that Joseph was doing it on purpose.
He didn't want her to go to Z Country. It didn't matter. She would go by herself.
She went out, hailed a taxi, and went straight to the airport.
"I'm sorry. Because of the situation in Z Country, all flights to Z Country are momentarily suspended. Only the flights coming back from Z Country are running. I'm sorry." The stewardess at the ticket office informed Waverly with a polite smile.
"I want to go to Z Country now. Is there any way I can?" Waverly continued asking the stewardess.
"Well, there's nothing I can do about it. I'm sorry." Still smiling, the flight attendant replied politely.
Waverly had no other way out. If she wanted to go to Z country now, she would have to get M Country to arrange it for her.
An idea flashed through her mind. She dialed Bobe's number.
"Hello, Bobe. Waverly here," Waverly said.
"You're a capable woman. I heard that you started work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today," Bobe praised her.
"M Country is a monarchy where the nobles have unbridled power and influence. I could easily join the Ministry of Foreign Affairs thanks to the Mccarthys. I need your help now."
"Go ahead."
"I'm going to Z Country. Could you send me a plane? Give me three days. You could pick me up at a designated area after three days. How much do you need?" Waverly said in a low voice.
"Z Country is at war now. Are you kidding? Do you want to die?" Bobe asked in surprise.
"I have a reason to go there," Waverly answered firmly.
"But no one will cooperate with me if you wind up dying," Bobe said euphemistically.
"If he dies, I can't cooperate with you either. I will die with him," Waverly said impulsively.
"Who are you talking about?" Bobe asked curiously.
"You don't have to know. Are you up for it or not?" Waverly asked bluntly. She added, "If not, I'll find another way."
"Ten million dollars. You know very well that I've sent countless people over," Bobe answered.
"Alright, I will transfer the money to your account later. You should get the plane and staff ready as soon as possible," Waverly replied and hung up, transferring the required amount to Bobe immediately.
She didn't have that much money, so she could only use what Bellamy had given her.
Two hours later, she was at an underground airport when Joseph called. She declined the call and left a text message for Bellamy, "I'm going to Z Country to meet you. Call me when you see my message."
As soon as Waverly sent the text, Joseph called again. She turned the phone off, threw it into her bag, and boarded the plane.
"Madam, Seth and I will be your escorts to ensure your safety. We will board this plane again 48 hours from now, from Z Country. Let's sync our watches now. The plane will only stay for 10 minutes. We can't dawdle." Rory said, holding his arm out to show them the time on his watch.
Waverly felt apologetic towards Rory and Seth. She wanted to go alone. She didn't expect Bobe to send people to guard her.
The mission this time was very dangerous. One could die in a matter of minutes. She did not want to drag others down with her.
However, Waverly also had a selfish motive. She wanted to save Bellamy.
"Give me your bank account numbers. I'll transfer 5 million dollars to each of you," Waverly said.
"No, it's our task to protect you." Rory rejected the offer.
"The money isn't for you. It's for your wives, children, and parents. If something were to happen to you, at least they can live a better life. I may not come back alive. I'll give you the money now," Waverly said firmly.
Rory and Seth exchanged glances.
"I have money. If you reject it, it'll be for nothing. If you want it, we could all relax a little knowing that we've made preparations for our loved ones back home," Waverly continued.
"Then, in that case, thank you for your generosity, Madam," Rory said.
They gave their account number to Waverly, and she transferred the money to them right away.
"It will take at least 12 hours to get to Z Country from here. Madam, you should take a nap first. I'll prepare some food for you when you wake up," Rory said.
"Okay, sorry for all the trouble," Waverly said. She had a faint headache, so she lay on the bed and put on a headset to cope with the high altitude.
Waverly didn't like flying. It made her ears hurt.
The flight would take twelve hours, and there might be a time difference once she lands in Z Country. She would blame herself if she became a liability to Bellamy instead of rescuing him from the warzone.
