Chapter 123 You're Not Qualified!
Five million dollars?
William was also helpless.
He had a premonition that something would go wrong, but he didn't expect Margaret to cause such a big mess.
"Okay, I'll be right there. Wait for me," William said. Then he quickly hung up the phone and rushed to where they were.
When he arrived, he found it was an old store with a hundred years of history. A crowd had already gathered at the entrance, some selling old items and others just watching the commotion. The place was bustling with people.
Inside the store, there was constant arguing. Just at the entrance, William could hear Margaret's shouting.
As he walked in, he saw Margaret making accusations at the store owner, claiming the store was bullying customers and selling fake goods to extort money. "I won't pay. Why should I pay? This porcelain is fake, and you're just trying to bully a woman who doesn't know any better. I'll call the police and have you arrested for extortion."
Margaret was furious. It was just a porcelain vase, and they were demanding five million dollars from her.
They were definitely trying to take advantage of her ignorance and extort money from her.
However, Margaret was also feeling guilty. The store had been there for a long time, and the owner had two burly, tattooed men standing behind him.
If it weren't for Rex holding her back, it could be worse.
"Mom, what's going on?" William squeezed through the crowd, looking puzzled.
Margaret glared at William, annoyed that he had arrived so late, causing her to be scolded by the store owner. She snapped, "Why are you so late? Never mind. Look at this little vase. I accidentally broke it, and they want me to pay five million. I'm not dealing with this. You stay here and handle it. It's probably only worth a few hundred dollars. I need to go home and make lunch for your dad."
With that, Margaret turned to leave.
Of course she must run away now.
William glanced at the broken porcelain vase on the ground, then looked up at Rex and asked, "Mr. Ingram, is this real?"
Rex nodded helplessly, "It's real. The store owner is my friend, and it's genuinely worth five million."
Rex was also heartbroken. This was the store's prized possession, and the owner was his friend.
He had brought Margaret to pick out something, but as soon as she walked in, she started touching everything and ended up breaking a piece of porcelain.
The store owner, seeing that William was a reasonable person, said, "This is authentic. It was a piece of ancient porcelain. I'm not trying to cheat you. Five million dollars, pay up and leave. Otherwise, I'll call the police. This is the most valuable item in my store, and your mother-in-law just broke it."
William sighed. The cost was quite high.
However, as soon as Margaret heard this, she started screaming, "You're lying. I think it's fake. This is extortion. I've seen plenty of stores selling fake goods. You're just desperate for money."
The store owner couldn't endure it anymore. His face immediately darkened.
Accusing his store of selling fake goods?
He couldn't tolerate that.
Running a business, especially in the Antique Market, involved a lot of unwritten rules.
Being insulted by such a shrew, no one could stand it.
"Lady, please take a good look. This is a century-old store. We have the best reputation in this area and have never sold a single fake item. You're defaming my reputation, and this is not just about paying for the damages." The store owner was furious. He picked up his phone, and said, "Let's not argue about this anymore. I'm calling the police and letting them handle it."
Hearing that the police would be involved, Margaret panicked. She knew she couldn't stay here any longer and hurriedly said to William, "William, you handle this. I'm leaving now. If there's any trouble, you deal with it."
She needed to get out of there quickly.
That was Margaret's current thought.
But could she leave?
She was immediately blocked by two burly men at the door. Their fierce looks and muscular bodies scared Margaret so much that she fell to the ground. She cried and shouted, "Look, they're hitting me. Bullies! This store owner has no conscience. He is extorting customers. He claims a fake vase is an antique and wants me to pay five million dollars"
What else could she do?
Of course, she would make a scene.
This tactic had always worked for Margaret.
But Margaret forgot one thing. This wasn't her home, and she couldn't act recklessly here.
One of the burly men grabbed Margaret by the collar and dragged her inside forcibly.
"Let go of me. Let go of me. They're hitting me. They're going to kill me!" Margaret struggled and screamed. Seeing William standing by and not helping, she immediately started cursing, "William, what are you standing there for? Hit them. Are you just going to watch me get beaten?"
Rude, unreasonable, and hysterical—that was Margaret's way.
William shook his head helplessly and asked, "Mom, did they hit you? You broke their item. Why can't you admit your mistake? We can just apologize and pay for it. Why make a scene?"
Margaret was absolutely unwilling to compensate for the vase.
The compensation was five million dollars!
"Are you crazy? Pay for it? It's fake. Fake!" Margaret went crazy, showing her shamelessness.
The store owner couldn't stand it anymore. As he glanced at his subordinates, one of them slapped Margaret across the face.
In an instant, Margaret, who had been acting aggressively and unreasonably, quieted down, her eyes filled with anger as she stared at William.
She didn't dare to confront the store owner, so she lashed out at William, scratching him and cursing, "Why do I have such a useless son-in-law like you? I've been hit, and you're just standing aside watching. You're a waste. I'm going to make Mary divorce you."
William felt helpless but didn't want to argue with her. He turned to the store owner and said, "I'm sorry. We'll pay for the item. How about we discuss this inside?"
The store owner glanced at Rex and then nodded. "Alright, you seem reasonable."
With that, they headed inside.
Margaret continued to make a scene outside, shouting, "William, if you want to pay, you pay yourself. This has nothing to do with me or our family."
However, when Margaret met the two burly men's eyes, she recoiled in fear, muttering curses under her breath from the corner.
Meanwhile, William followed the store owner into the inner room.
"Mr. Jones, I'm really sorry. This is partly my fault," Rex said apologetically to William as soon as they entered.
This scene shocked the store owner, who asked in confusion, "Mr. Ingram, what's going on?"
Why was Rex showing such respect to this young man?
Rex smiled and said, "This is the Mr. Jones I mentioned to you earlier."
The store owner was taken aback and immediately invited William to sit down respectfully.
So this was the top-tier rich scion who had invested 330 million dollars in Rex.
For someone so wealthy, a single antique was no big deal.
"Mr. Jones, I'm really sorry. I didn't know your identity earlier. How about this? You don't have to pay for the porcelain vase. Consider it a token of my respect for you," the store owner said, trying to flatter William.
But William waved his hand and said, "No, let's keep things clear. It is what it is. I don't lack money. Give me your account details, and I'll have someone transfer the money to you."
The store owner looked at Rex and saw him nod, so he didn't refuse further.
After a brief five-minute conversation, William and the others came out of the inner room.
Seeing William come out unscathed, Margaret was surprised and asked, "You're okay?"
"What could happen?" William replied.
The store owner said politely, "Mr. Jones, you're welcome to visit our store again. Let me see you off."
William shook his head and said, "No need."
With that, they left.
On the way, Margaret stared at William in shock. Finally, she seized the opportunity and asked, "William, stop. Tell me honestly, have you been hiding money from Mary?"
William shook his head and smiled faintly, "Mom, what are you talking about?"
Margaret sneered, "What am I talking about? The store owner demanded a compensation of five million dollars, and you didn't pay. How did he let you go?"
William must have hidden some money and probably paid a lot.
But it couldn't have been five million.
Margaret believed that the porcelain was fake and that the whole thing was a scam.
William casually explained, "Mom, it was just a fake porcelain piece. With Mr. Ingram there, they didn't pursue it further. We paid about 16 thousand dollars."
He had to go along with this story now.
"16 thousand dollars?" Margaret's voice rose, and hearing ten thousand dollars, she felt a pang in her heart and cursed, "You wastrel. Where did you get so much money? Tell me, how did you get the money? Are you having an affair behind Mary's back?"
William must have done something shady.
Margaret had to find out where the money came from.
William felt helpless and very annoyed.
Margaret was too much trouble.
"Mom, there's nothing like that. Don't overthink," William said and then hailed a cab to take Margaret home.
But just then, a beautiful woman with a cold fragrance walked straight towards William.
In front of Margaret, she slapped William hard in the face.
Susan's face was cold, her long dress perfectly outlining her figure, but now, she only had hatred for William.
"What are you doing?" William was furious. Susan must have gone mad.
"William, you said you didn't do anything wrong. Who is this woman?" Margaret was enraged, her eyes venomously fixed on Susan.
This woman looked like a homewrecker. That was Margaret's first impression of Susan.
However, something strange happened in the next second.
"Are you William's mother-in-law?" Susan stared at Margaret with cold eyes.
Margaret felt a chill down her spine. Intimidated by Susan's gaze, she nervously said, "Yes, I am. So what? Who are you?"
Susan raised her hand and slapped Margaret in the face, coldly saying, "Remember this, you're not qualified to ask who I am."
