Chapter 377 The Mastermind Behind the Scenes

William jumped up, bolted out of the room, and scanned the doorway, but no one was there.

His heart was pounding with excitement.

'What's going on? Is it really Ellie?' he thought, buzzing with anticipation.

He hurried back and tore open the small box Mary had brought. Inside was a piece of jewelry and a note: [For my beautiful sister-in-law.]

That line hit William right in the feels.

Could it really be his sister Ellie?

But why didn't she come see him?

William's emotions were all over the place, and Mary could tell something was up. She tried to comfort him, "What's wrong, William? What happened?"

Mary also noticed the jewelry in the box. It looked super fancy and expensive.

William clutched the note tightly, his eyes getting misty. He took a deep breath, put the note away, and forced a smile, saying, "It's nothing; this is my friend who sent you a gift. Do you like it?"

Mary took the necklace from William's hand.

"I like it, but who is this friend of yours? Why would they send me such expensive jewelry?" Mary asked, puzzled.

Why didn't she manage to stop that woman just now?

Looking at William, it seemed like their relationship was not simple.

"A very important friend. It's nothing, just wear it. It's perfect for tonight's party," William said, smiling and putting the necklace on Mary.

It was clear that the necklace was carefully chosen; it really complemented Mary's vibe.

Mary looked at the necklace around her neck, smiled, and then noticed that William had already changed into his evening suit.

The white shirt with intricate designs peeking through accentuated his physique. The tailored black evening jacket gave him a poised and dignified look, while the pocket square on his chest added to his noble bearing.

He looked simple yet clean and elegant. The clothes Layla had chosen really suited him. This outfit looked like it was tailor-made for him.

"Mary, you go down first. I still need to do my hair," William said, smiling.

Mary nodded and went downstairs first.

Layla recalled William's beastly behavior in the dressing room earlier and bit her lip in anger, glaring at him.

Seeing Mary had gone downstairs, William leaned close to Layla's ear and whispered, "Don't forget to come find me, or I'll come find you."

His warm breath made her body tremble uncontrollably.

She looked up at William with a complex expression but said nothing.

After William left, Layla returned to the room. She stood in front of the huge mirror, looking at herself in the mirror.

Layla cursed inwardly, 'Damn it!'

She had not only failed but also been humiliated!

How would she explain this to her boss?

The BK Pharmaceuticals party was held at the Majestic Grand Hotel. It was actually an industry networking event, not just for the top executives of BK Pharmaceuticals but also inviting many well-known entrepreneurs from the pharmaceutical industry across the country.

Mary and William arrived early. At the hotel entrance, they ran into Jeffery.

Jeffery, accompanied by a female companion, had a smug smile on his face. Seeing Mary and William get out of the car, he felt a pang of jealousy and arrogantly approached them.

"William, I didn't expect you to come too," he said, a hint of disdain flashing in his eyes.

William turned to see his face and gave him a cold glance.

"Mary, you go inside first. I need to have a word with Jeffery," William said, holding Mary by the waist and indicating for her to go ahead.

Mary frowned slightly and whispered in his ear, "Don't make things too tense."

William smiled, indicating he understood.

After Mary walked away, William glanced at Jeffrey, gave his shoulder a pat. Jeffrey flinched and looked at William with a wary expression, asking, "What do you want?"

William shrugged and reminded, "Jeffery, you'd better keep a low profile."

"Who the hell do you think you are, telling me what to do? William, I used to think we were friends, but from now on, we are enemies!" Jeffery snapped, seething with anger. William had clearly hit rock bottom, yet he still acted all high and mighty.

William, the so-called loser, was actually the young master of the Jones Group.

When Jeffery first found out, he was floored too.

But now, things were different. He wasn't scared at all!

William would always be such a useless!

Plus, with so many people around today, he didn't believe William would dare do anything to him.

William frowned slightly and said coldly, "Jeffery, how dare you talk to me like that? Is it the people backing you? Didn't the last beating teach you a lesson?"

Upon hearing this, Jeffery instinctively took a few steps back, cursed a few times, and threatened, "Just wait. I won't let you off easy!" He then hurried into the hotel lobby with his tall female companion.

Watching Jeffery's hasty retreat, William shook his head and sighed. He didn't rush inside but lit a cigarette.

The party officially started, filled with boring segments. William stayed by Mary's side the whole time and noticed that Mary didn't seem very happy; there wasn't a trace of a smile on her face.

"Hey, what's on your mind? Something bugging you?" William asked, nudging Mary with his elbow.

Mary was startled, tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, and smiled faintly. "Nothing, I'm just going to the restroom."

With that, she lifted the long skirt of her evening gown and walked alone to the restroom.

William didn't pay much attention, but he casually glanced around and noticed a man in the crowd who followed Mary secretly shortly after she left.

It seemed normal, but William had a nagging feeling that something was off.

He frowned slightly, put down his wine glass, and followed the sneaky man to the restroom. Sure enough, the man looked around a few times before sneaking into the women's restroom.

Mary stood in front of the mirror in the restroom, looking at her reflection. Her eyes were a bit unfocused, lost in thought.

"Come on!" she muttered to herself, trying to cheer herself up. She shook her head and bent down to wash her hands, preparing to leave.

Suddenly, a man in a black suit burst in from the restroom door, his face grim, staring at Mary.

"Who are you?" Mary asked, panicked, stumbling back a few steps.

Clinging to the sink, she watched as the man locked the door. Her heart sank.

The man coldly looked at her and declared fiercely, "I'm here to take your life!"

With that, he drew a silver dagger from his sleeve, its blade glinting with a cold, deadly light.

Fear drained the color from Mary's face. With one hand tightly clutching the sink and the other clenched into a fist, she asked, "Who sent you?"

Mary knew clearly that the man was prepared and had come with a purpose.

She wanted to call for help, but she knew that doing so would only get her killed faster.

So, she chose to stall.

"Sorry, I can't tell you that," the man said with a cold smile.

Licking his lips, he said, "Don't worry. It won't hurt a bit."

With that, he took two steps forward, gripping the dagger tightly.

She was just a weak woman, yet her life was valued at five million dollars.

It was too easy to kill her.

"How much? I'll pay you double!" Mary hurriedly said, taking a few steps back and gritting her teeth.

She didn't understand who she had offended, but it was clear that someone had hired a killer.

Could it be because of the company's new drug?

The man hesitated, frowning at Mary, seemingly tempted by her offer.

But in an instant, he sneered, "We have a rule in this business: never betray the client. Don't worry, it won't hurt. It's a pity for such a pretty face."

With that, his eyes narrowed, revealing a cold glint. He lunged forward, the dagger aimed at Mary's chest.

At that moment, Mary screamed, her eyes wide with terror, fixated on the sharp dagger coming straight at her.
