Chapter 402 William Is the CEO
Had William lost his marbles?
How could he say something like that?
What could a loser like him even do?
Chloe and Inigo just stared at William, then burst out laughing. "William, who do you think you are? What can you even do?"
Chloe's eyes were icy, and she looked like she wanted to slap him right then and there.
William used to be a nobody. How dare he stand up for Mary now?
Was he showing off because Mary was the chairwoman?
"Mary slept her way to the top, and now he's acting all high and mighty," Inigo sneered, his eyes practically undressing Mary.
He'd wanted Mary for ages but never had the guts to make a move.
Now, thinking Mary had to sell herself to get ahead, he felt both pissed and thrilled.
Inigo cursed inwardly, 'Mary, what a slut!'
The other relatives looked at William with mocking eyes and said, "Enough, William, there's nothing for you to do here. Just sit quietly on the side!"
"Yeah, how dare you boast? We're talking about a million dollars here!"
"He's got some nerve. Margaret, you need to deal with William. How dare he talk big?"
Facing their sarcasm and insults, William felt a chill in his heart, and his eyes showed a hint of coldness.
Just as he was about to say something, Margaret suddenly stood up and slapped William.
Margaret gritted her teeth and scolded, "William, what are you doing? This isn't the place for you to speak. Get out! I regret bringing you here; you're a disgrace!"
William was furious, his face turned livid, and his fists clenched tightly, looking very intimidating.
Margaret raised an eyebrow and immediately said, "Have you forgotten what you promised me? You signed that agreement! Now get out!"
She pointed to the door as she scolded.
William found it hard to suppress his anger, but thinking of the agreement, he softened his stance.
He couldn't afford to cause trouble for Mary now or let her misunderstand him.
After all, Mary was pregnant, and if she got too emotional and had a miscarriage, it would be disastrous.
The onlookers all looked on gleefully, sneering with disdain.
Mary stood up, walked to William's side, glanced at him, and then angrily shouted at Margaret, "Mom, what are you doing? Why did you hit William again?"
What was wrong with Margaret? How dare she lay hands on William?
Margaret didn't bother to explain, glaring coldly at William with a look that said, "What can you do to me?"
William forced a smile and said to Mary, "I'm going out for a smoke."
Mary held onto him, feeling furious at the group of relatives.
Once William left, the group surrounded Margaret, harshly criticizing William.
And Margaret grew to hate him.
Solon began to apologize to Mary. "Mary, I apologize for what Chloe and Inigo said earlier. Don't take it to heart; they were just anxious and spoke without thinking."
Chloe and Inigo watched silently on the side.
If Solon hadn't stopped her, Chloe would have left in a huff long ago.
She had never liked Mary; to be precise, she despised Mary.
In the past, her family owned a company, and Mary was just a small marketing manager at BK Pharmaceuticals, not even worth comparing to herself.
Back then, she was a rich girl, and Mary was just an ordinary person.
Now, Mary had suddenly become the chairwoman, with a promising future, which made Chloe jealous and often badmouth Mary with old friends and classmates in private.
Now, her company was in trouble, and she had to ask Mary for help, which made her even more uncomfortable.
Mary was also unhappy, but since they were all relatives, she couldn't be too harsh. She just smiled and said, "It's okay."
Ragnar coughed a few times and began to speak, "Mary, could you please help Chloe?"
Mary immediately said, "Of course, I'll help if I can."
Mary had no choice. Even Ragnar had stepped in to ask for help; she couldn't possibly refuse him.
Solon noticed her hesitation and suggested, "Mary, if it's really not possible, could you at least help us get in touch with someone at Crescent Investment Group? With your connections, getting a ten-million-dollar investment shouldn't be a problem, right?"
Solon's plan was meticulous.
Inigo, excited, chimed in, "Yes, Dad, you're absolutely right. Mary must know someone at Crescent Investment Group. Forget ten million dollars, even a hundred million would be fine! Isn't that right, Mary?"
Inigo was deliberately setting a trap for Mary.
If Mary agreed and couldn't secure a hundred-million-dollar investment, it would be humiliating.
Chloe also interjected, "Mary, we're all pleading with you. Just this once, please lend us a hand."
Mary felt troubled, and Solon's wife, Alexis, kept pleading with Margaret.
Margaret couldn't withstand their pleas and tugged at Mary, saying, "Mary, just help them out."
She then looked at Solon and said, "But let me make it clear, whether Crescent Investment Group invests or not has nothing to do with Mary. We'll just help you make the connection. The rest is up to you."
This was to absolve themselves of any responsibility.
Solon glanced at Chloe and nodded. "Alright."
Mary also agreed and took out her phone and called the relevant person at Crescent Investment Group in front of everyone. She politely said, "Mr. Kingsley, hello. I need a favor. My relatives have a foreign trade company and would like to discuss some cooperation and investment with you."
On the other end of the line was a cheerful middle-aged man's voice. "Ms. Smith, I can't make that decision. I'll need to consult our boss. Can you wait a few minutes?"
"Okay, thank you," Mary said with and a smile and hung up the phone.
All the relatives stared at her with wide eyes.
"So, what did they say?" Solon asked eagerly, having really swallowed his pride this time.
"Mr. Kingsley said he needs to consult their boss and asked us to wait a few minutes," Mary replied truthfully.
This statement elicited a few cold laughs from Chloe. "Dad, can't you tell? This is just an excuse. If she can't help, that's it. Why pretend to be a good person? Should we be grateful to her even if she can't help our family?"
Mary frowned, feeling furious at Chloe.
What kind of people were they?
Mary wished she could get up and leave right now.
Solon also glared angrily at Chloe, saying, "Enough, stop arguing. Can you say a few less words?"
Chloe had been spoiled since childhood and treated everyone with arrogance.
She was bound to suffer for it in the future.
Inigo, however, took the opportunity to mock, "Hey, call William back. Didn't he say he could help? If he can, I'll be the first to kneel and apologize to him."
Everyone could tell that Inigo's words were aimed at William's earlier statement.
The group sneered coldly, "That loser is just all talk."
Meanwhile, William was smoking when he received a call.
"Sir, Mary asked if we could invest in Elite Exim Enterprises."
On the other end was Lucius Kingsley, the person who had just spoken with Mary. He was merely the apparent head of Crescent Investment Group.
William thought for a moment and said, "Do it."
With that, he hung up the phone.
This favor was entirely for Mary's sake.
William then turned and walked back into the living room. As soon as he entered, everyone's eyes fell on him, full of mockery.
"Oh, done smoking? You really have the nerve to come back," Inigo mocked, standing up. He then circled William twice and patted his shoulder with a mocking expression.
William chuckled, glanced at Mary on the sofa, and said to Inigo, "I came back to see you kneel and apologize."
