Chapter 142 You Don't Deserve to Boast
However, after waiting for a long time, there was still no query result.
Mary frowned, entered it again, but still no result.
Helpless, Mary called the security guard, only to find out that the ATM was broken and under maintenance.
"Thank you," Mary said to the security guard, before walking toward the teller counter.
But just at that moment, a familiar voice called out from behind Mary.
"Mary, what are you doing here?" Lori had just walked in and spotted a familiar figure.
Who else could it be but Mary?
The two met and smiled politely at each other.
"Lori?" Mary said, with a look of regret for not seeing an old classmate sooner. Lori was her classmate and friend in college. However, after college, the two rarely kept in touch.
It wasn't that they didn't care about each other. They just drifted apart, as was common after graduation. Everyone was busy with their own lives. They had no time to be like those wealthy ladies, having leisurely cups of coffee in a cafe, chatting about the latest gossip, or new cosmetics and bags.
Lori was also very happy to have bumped into Mary, who was not at all a snobbish and materialistic person.
"Mary, it's been three years, and you're getting prettier. Why haven't I seen your husband William?"
Lori looked Mary up and down. She was still so beautiful and elegant, which made Lori a bit jealous, but she didn't show it at all.
However, Lori asking about William seemed a bit intentional.
Everyone knew that William had been having a tough time these past few years, and many thought she made the wrong decision when she married William.
Lori bringing him up as soon as they met made Mary feel as though she was being mocked.
Mary smiled slightly and politely replied, "He's at the hospital with Sarah. Sarah just had surgery."
Lori looked very surprised and then started talking to Mary about Sarah. After chatting for a while, the topic turned back to William, and she earnestly said, "Mary, you may not believe me, but men these days are unfaithful. There are so many who cheat on their wives. You have to keep an eye on William. Don't let him stray. Although he may not be very successful, he does love you. You have to watch him closely."
Lori observed Mary's facial expressions as she spoke.
Mary smiled and said, "I trust William. He wouldn't betray me."
Lori's eyebrows furrowed tightly, and she suddenly said, "Oh, I just remembered. On my way here, I saw William. I don't know if I should tell you this."
Feigning hesitation, she piqued Mary's curiosity. Mary asked suspiciously, "What's going on? What did you see?"
Lori looked around to make sure they had privacy, then took out her phone and said, "Just to be clear, I didn't intentionally take this video. I accidentally saw it. You need to stay calm."
As she spoke, Lori opened the video she had just secretly recorded, under Mary's suspicious gaze.
While playing the video, Lori pretended to be angry and resentful, she said, "Mary, look at this. I told you, but you didn't believe me. Men these days are all the same. The moment your back is turned, they'll start flirting around. Look at William, hitting on a twenty-year-old girl and getting into her car. It's shameless!"
Lori added, "I don't know where they went, but it looked like they were heading towards the Hilton Hotel."
At this point, Lori didn't say anything more.
Mary watched the video, feeling extremely shocked and angry.
Although she trusted William, seeing something like this would make anyone furious.
The girl in the video was really pretty and had a good figure. She even held William's arm as she pulled him into the car.
However, despite her anger, Mary didn't show it on her face. Instead, she pretended to be calm and said, "That's a relative's kid. She asked William for something. I know about this."
Lori became flustered immediately. "You know? No way." Lori didn't believe Mary and thought she was lying to maintain her own dignity.
But Lori couldn't see any panic or anger on Mary's face.
Even after parting ways with Mary, Lori crossed her arms and watched Mary's back, muttering, "Did I guess wrong?"
Lori thought to herself, 'Forget it, getting the money is more important. If it's possible, I'll ask the rich guy out tonight.'
Mary left the bank without even checking her account balance.
She was very angry.
Sitting in the car, she called William and asked angrily, "William, where are you?"
William had been dragged by Betty to the Dragonstone Mountain racetrack, which was a very upscale and spacious racetrack.
William didn't expect there to be such a place in Lindwood City.
"Mary, I'm out handling something. What's up?" William walked away from Betty and her friends, holding the princess doll he had bought.
"Who are you with?" Mary asked.
"No one, just a friend." William glanced back at Betty and the others, who were all looking at him with strange expressions.
"Really?" Mary hung up the phone abruptly, leaving William confused.
'What's going on? Women can get angry just like that?' thought William.
"William, are you done with your call? Don't tell me you're chickening out."
In the distance, Milton laughed mockingly, his face was full of disdain.
"I bet he doesn't even know where he is. He's probably scared," another girl leaned against a red Mustang, chewing gum nonchalantly.
The group exchanged glances and burst into laughter, mocking him.
Betty didn't say anything. She watched William walk over, then walked up to him, snatched his phone, and said in a cold voice, "Have fun today. Don't think about anything else."
William looked helpless. They had dragged him here. What were they planning to do?
At that moment, Clarence suddenly pulled out a large bouquet of red roses from his car's trunk. In front of everyone, he knelt on one knee before Betty and said passionately, "Betty, I really like you. Will you be my girlfriend?"
Immediately, the crowd started to cheer. It wasn't just Betty's friends. As this was a professional racetrack, there were at least a hundred people around them, all rich scions.
"Say yes, say yes!"
The crowd cheered. It was clearly something Clarence had arranged beforehand. Milton and the others, were particularly enthusiastic, leaving William aside.
William was happy to be left alone. He just hoped these people would be done with their antics quickly and send him home.
He had to complain to Alan when he got back. His daughter needed some serious education.
However, to everyone's surprise, Betty glanced at Clarence and turned him down. "Clarence, I'm sorry. I know you like me, but I don't like you. I already have a boyfriend."
After saying that, Betty turned around, pretending to take a phone call, and called William to get in the car, "Let's go."
William was dumbfounded. Was it over just like that?
Why was he dragged here in the first place? To make up the numbers? That didn't seem right.
He hesitated for a moment, and Betty glared at him, scolding, "Let's go. Why are you just standing there?"
William quickly nodded and ran over.
However, Clarence stepped in front of Betty and grabbed her arm. He asked coldly, "Betty, stop joking. When did you get a boyfriend?"
As he spoke, Clarence sneered and looked at William, pointing at him. "Don't tell me this poor, ordinary guy is your boyfriend."
Immediately, everyone turned to look at William.
William knew that something bad would happen, but he didn't expect such a cliché scenario to happen to him.
He quickly tried to shake his head and explain, but Betty broke free from Clarence's grip and said, "That's right, he is my boyfriend. Why don't you believe it?"
Great! Betty was clearly stirring up trouble.
Didn't she have any other male friends? Why drag a stranger to act as her boyfriend?
But he couldn't blame Betty, it was Alan who had hyped William up too much.
Betty thought that a man like William was the right fit to be her boyfriend, so she found him.
However, she was greatly disappointed and now found herself in a difficult situation.
Clarence fixed his gaze on William immediately, walked up to him with a domineering attitude, and taunted him. "Even though Betty said that, I really don't believe it. Someone like you, dressed so poorly, how could she be interested in you? Tell me, how much did she pay you to act as her boyfriend? I'll pay you double, and you can roll down the mountain right now!"
A burst of laughter and ridicule followed.
Betty couldn't stand so many people looking at her with disdain. She stomped her foot in anger and shouted at Clarence. "Clarence, whether you believe it or not, he is my boyfriend. I want to leave now, so tell them to clear the way."
Milton had already led people to block the entrance with their cars.
"You want to leave? Fine, as long as he races me for a lap. If he wins, you can leave anytime. If he loses, you have to agree to be my girlfriend, and he has to kneel and crawl under my legs, then roll all the way down the mountain!"
Clarence said this with a cold expression, his eyebrows raised in a provocative manner. He was extremely arrogant.
"Who said you could get close to her? Any man who gets close to Betty has to go up against me!" Clarence said with a chilling look in his eyes as he got close to William and patted him on his shoulder.
Everyone else looked at William with disdain. He was doomed.
Clarence was the state racing champion, having won three consecutive championships.
This fall, he was going to participate in international racing competitions. He was the most promising candidate to represent the country.
Racing against him was pure suicide.
Moreover, Clarence had already qualified for the Formula 1 World Championship.
This was the highest level of racing in the world, known as one of the "three major sports events" alongside the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup.
William had no chance of winning.
Furthermore, William looked so poor, he probably had never even touched a race car. They forced William into an awkward situation on purpose.
William frowned tightly. He didn't expect to be looked down upon by a few young people.
They were too arrogant, which made William very angry.
William wanted to refuse at first, but the restless feeling inside him made him hesitate.
Betty also knew that William had no chance against Clarence. She stomped her foot in anger and said, "Clarence, you're doing this on purpose, aren't you? He doesn't know how to race. I won't agree to your terms. We're leaving!"
With that, Betty tried to pull William away.
But to everyone's surprise, William flashed a bright smile and said, "Alright, let's race a lap. We'll do it your way. But if I win, first, you have to apologize to me, and second, how about you give me your car?"
