Chapter 57 Mary Discovers William's Identity
A casual remark, yet it sent a jolt through Margaret and Jeffery's hearts!
What did it mean to give face to him? This good-for-nothing dared to say such things at this time!
Who did he think he was?
Margaret was trembling with anger at that moment. William was really full of himself, picking just the right moment to stir trouble.
Was he trying to embarrass her on purpose, to make her offend Charles?
Was this revenge?
"William, shut up! Who do you think you are to speak here?" Margaret scolded, trembling with rage.
She was genuinely worried that this good-for-nothing William would accidentally offend someone as important as Charles.
To force others to acknowledge him, did he not realize that the other party's status is much higher than his?
William frowned, not expecting Margaret to be the first to scold him. He had kindly intended to help her out of trouble, and yet she turned around and bit him.
"What are you still standing there for? Apologize to Charles right now!" Margaret finally found an opportunity and criticized William without restraint, hoping that Charles's attention wouldn't fall on her.
Jeffery also had a chill in his eyes and a slight twitch at the corner of his mouth. He was feeling very displeased!
William really had a way of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time!
If they really offended Professor Charles, they would all be in big trouble.
So, Jeffery immediately stepped forward. "William, apologize to Charles right away. What's this about acknowledging you? How valuable do you think you are that you dare to speak such big words so shamelessly?"
"Exactly, if you want to die, don't drag us down with you," Margaret immediately echoed, with a sycophantic smile on her face. "Charles, you see, it was William who was disrespectful to you. If you're looking for someone to go after, he's the one you're looking for. Don't come after me. I've already apologized to you, and you wouldn't hold a grudge against a woman like me, right?"
Margaret played the card of a weak woman to the extreme.
The two of them, in concert, quickly left William battered and bruised.
"Charles, William is just a thoughtless person, don't stoop to his level," Jeffery said with a flattering smile, then turned and scolded William. "What are you standing there for? Haven't you apologized to Charles yet? Do you know what he is here for?"
This was Jeffery's biggest effort to invite the country's best cardiologist, Charles!
A medical authority!
He came for William's daughter and yet William dared to be so disrespectful!
He must tell Mary about this; surely she would have an even worse opinion of William.
Thinking of this, Jeffery sneered to himself.
But then, a surprising scene unfolded!
Charles glared at Jeffery and coldly said, "Jeffery, have you forgotten what I just said to you? Do not judge a person lightly, and do not insult anyone casually! The way you speak makes me wary of your character!"
Charles had seen through it.
This ridiculous mother-in-law and Jeffery obviously looked down on William. They were blind!
If they knew William's identity, they would probably be kneeling and begging for mercy.
Jeffery panicked, promptly bowing and nodding. "Charles's criticism is correct, it’s my fault, but William was disrespectful to you, I couldn't stand it, so I criticized him a bit."
However, unexpectedly, Charles said to Margaret, "Today, I will not stoop to your level, you country bumpkin, all because of William. But do not get carried away. If I find out you continue to offend William, I will make you regret it!"
Margaret dared not say a word against it, nodding and smiling agreeably.
Thus, the standoff lasted for a moment.
Then Charles sharply commanded, "What are you waiting for? Apologize to William right now!"
Apologize to William?
Jeffery was stunned, unable to say a word. Margaret was dumbfounded too.
Apologize to the good-for-nothing son-in-law?
She almost lost her temper! Margaret was full of rage! How could she, with such a narrow heart, apologize to a good-for-nothing?
And moreover, to her son-in-law!
Stuttering for a long time, Margaret glared at William, wishing she could curse him to death.
William was also stunned, not expecting Charles to exert such pressure.
So, he immediately waved his hands and said, "There's no need for that, Charles, I'm really okay."
But Charles was not willing to let it go, still staring coldly at Margaret and threatening her. "You can choose not to apologize, but I want to tell you, even the Mayor of Lindwood City has to respectfully call me 'sir' when he sees me."
This was like a slap in Margaret's face.
She was just a regular woman, how could she dare to fight with someone as important as Charles?
So, even though Margaret was extremely reluctant, she still had to apologize to William. "I'm sorry."
Although the attitude was not good, she finally spoke. As she spoke, Margaret already had a hundred plans to take revenge on William.
With that, the matter was finally settled.
However, just as Jeffery was about to ask about medical matters, Charles walked away.
Jeffery panicked, hurriedly following him.
In the reception area, only Margaret and William were left.
The former, with eyes like a wolf, glared at William, her gaze filled with fury.
"Margaret, you don't…"
Before William could finish speaking, Margaret slapped him across the face. "How does it feel to be apologized to by me?"
William was speechless, his cheek burning with pain, his fists clenched in his trouser seams.
"Are you satisfied? If you have the guts, hit me, come on, hit me." Margaret immediately pushed William, daring him to do it.
More onlookers gathered.
Margaret stopped only when she was about to leave, giving William a fierce glance and muttering. "Good-for-nothing! Better to die early and be reborn! Take your little bastard with you!"
Little bastard?
She was insulting Sarah!
That was her daughter's flesh and blood. Her granddaughter!
In the past, Margaret would insult him a few times, and William would just bear it.
But today, Margaret clearly went too far!
"Margaret! I warn you, you can insult me, but don't insult Sarah! She is your granddaughter!"
William was furious, not holding back, his eyes bloodshot as he stared at Margaret and shouted.
At that moment, Margaret's first reaction was fear. She didn't expect William, who had always been meek, to actually get angry at her!
He was defying the heavens!
He dared to yell at her!
"William, what did you just call me? You dare to address me by name now, how audacious of you. Getting angry at your own mother-in-law, huh? Fine, this household can function without you in it! Tomorrow, you and that illegitimate child will vacate the house I bought for you!"
Margaret was furious, scolding him like a shrew on the spot.
However, William replied, "Mom, that house wasn't bought by you alone, you don't have the right to kick us out. Also, if you really kick me out, you might end up regretting it."
Margaret scoffed with contempt. "You think I'll regret it? What I regret most now is letting Mary marry you!"
As Margaret continued to scold him, William simply turned around and left.
"Where are you going? We haven't finished talking about what just happened."
Behind him, Margaret's angry scolding continued.
William returned to the ward, took out the porridge he had been stewing, and tried to feed it to Mary, who declined and began to sip from the bowl herself.
After a while, Jeffery came in and said a few words. "Mary, I'm really sorry, there is a bit of a situation with Charles, I'll go find him right now. Don't worry, I'll make sure Sarah 's surgery is taken care of."
After saying this, Jeffery left in a hurry.
Mary, although unclear about what had happened, knew there must be an urgent matter and told Jeffery not to push himself too hard.
William didn't say a word from beginning to end. He just cleaned up the bowls and went out to wash them.
Mary leaned on the hospital bed, looking out the window, thinking of someone who might be able to help her.
Boss Jones.
Mary took out her phone, scrolled to Boss Jones's number, hesitated for a long time, and mustered up her emotions before making the call.
She thought, as a woman, Boss Jones would probably help her.
'Just give it a try.'
"Passing through your world, living through the prime of me, please move forward without looking back, the person waiting for you at the end will be me."
The familiar ringtone.
But at the moment the ringtone came through the handset, another phone's ring echoed in the ward.
Mary was surprised, slowly moving the phone away from her ear, searching for the source of the incoming call in the ward.
Finally, her gaze locked onto William's jacket, which he had taken off as soon as he entered.
Mary glanced at her own phone, the number she had dialed was Boss Jones's, not William's.
A coincidence?
