Chapter 143 The Challenge
William's gaze fell on the red Ferrari behind Clarence.
If he could give this car to Mary, she wouldn't have to take the bus to work anymore, and she wouldn't have to work so hard.
Thinking of this, a confident smile appeared on William's lips.
However, the crowd watching them were looking at William as if he were a fool.
Had this man lose his mind?
"What did he just say? He wants to race with Clarence? And if he wins, Clarence has to apologize and give him the car?"
"Does he not know who Clarence is?"
"State champion, three-time consecutive winner!"
Many people laughed mockingly at William, feeling nothing but pity for him.
It was like a clown daring to challenge a prince.
Clarence also sneered mercilessly. He didn't expect William to be so confident that he dared to challenge him to a race.
'He's asking for it,' thought Clarence.
"That's where you're wrong. If you had just admitted your mistake, I might have let you off. But now that you've said that, I'm really pissed off."
Clarence smiled arrogantly. He poked William's chest with his finger and said viciously, "What gives you the confidence to challenge me?"
Clarence was extremely annoyed now.
A poor, ordinary guy like William dared to challenge him, and he wanted an apology and his car.
What an idiot he was!
Milton and a few others stared at William. Milton said, "If you want to put on a show, that's fine, but there's a limit. Clarence is the state champion and will be competing in international races later this year. He even has a spot in next year's F1. Do you really think you have what it takes to go up against him?"
Milton and the others looked at Betty. She had a nonchalant expression on her face, which they found amusing. If Betty just wanted to use someone as an excuse to reject Clarence, she should have found someone more reliable instead of this guy.
Betty was also fuming inside. She yanked William aside and said unhappily, "William, what are you doing? Are you crazy? Clarence is the best racer here. He holds the record for this track. No one is faster than him. You're going to make me look bad. Just shut up and stay out of this!"
Betty was very upset now. She was sure Alan had misjudged William.
How good could William be? Alan had praised him to the skies.
"Clarence, to each their own. What he agreed to has nothing to do with me. I don't accept your terms and conditions. I'm leaving," Betty said discontentedly to Clarence before turning to get into her car.
However, Milton and the others clearly wouldn't let Betty go. They blocked her way and forced her to stay.
"What are you doing? Move!" Betty was furious. She pouted and turned to glare at Clarence, shouting, "Clarence, what do you mean by this?"
Clarence smiled gently and said, "Betty, don't be in such a hurry. Since he challenged me and he's your so-called boyfriend, how could I not accept?"
With that, Clarence turned his head and looked at William arrogantly, "How do you want to race?"
William stroked his chin and said calmly, "Since you're the record holder, let's race for speed."
"Fine." Clarence smiled. He was very confident. His record was six minutes and twenty-seven seconds.
It was the shortest time ever recorded on the track, over a minute ahead of the second place.
Almost everyone at Dragonstone Mountain Raceway knew Clarence and were his fans.
In less than three minutes, everyone at the race track knew that someone had challenged Clarence to a race, with the winner to be determined by their speed.
" That guy is just asking for it."
"He's really something. He didn't even bother to find out who Clarence was."
"Just enjoy the show. You have to admit that he's got guts, no one has dared to challenge Clarence in a long time."
Everyone at the race track gathered together, discussing this highly uneven challenge race.
Of course, no one had any faith in William because he was an ordinary guy dressed in shabby clothes.
He didn't even know how to wear a racing suit. He had to be guided by the staff.
Many people started to wonder, was this guy serious about challenging Clarence?
The news of William challenging Clarence spread quickly within the circle.
Many people who hadn't planned on coming to the track today rushed over from all parts of Lindwood City as soon as they heard the news.
It was a big event.
An ordinary guy, William, challenging Lindwood City's racing god, Clarence.
Of course it would generate buzz!
On the streets, one luxury car after another headed towards Dragonstone Mountain.
"Mom, why are there so many luxury cars? Where are they going?"
Children on the street were curious to see so many luxury cars speeding past them.
The adults were even more puzzled. What was going on today? Was there a luxury car show going on somewhere?
In the end, even the traffic control bureau had to come out to maintain order.
There were too many luxury cars. Even Aston Martins and Bugatti Veyrons were on the road.
Ordinary people couldn't afford to mess with them, so there was a massive traffic jam.
A bunch of rich scions were stuck on the road, cursing and banging on their steering wheels.
Ordinary car owners were all scared and kept their distance. If they bumped into one of these, they wouldn't be able to afford the compensation.
"What the heck is going on?" The captain of the traffic control team was also bewildered when he heard that hundreds of luxury cars were on the move.
Meanwhile, the race between William and Clarence was about to start.
The entire track was cleared. Everyone stood on the sidelines, watching the giant electronic screen.
The whole track was covered with monitors, and the giant electronic screen was broadcasting live.
On the track, Clarence was ready. He wore a red racing suit. Before getting into the car, a hot car model handed him a bottle of champagne, to congratulate him in advance.
Clarence gave William the middle finger and sneered. "Hope you don't lose too badly."
With that, Clarence opened the car door and got in.
On the other side, William shrugged helplessly. He didn't even have a car.
No one in the crowd was willing to lend William a car, which was already embarrassing for him.
"Seriously? He doesn't even have a car and still wants to challenge Clarence."
"That's so embarrassing. If it were me, I'd find a hole to crawl into."
"Who the hell is this guy? Does anyone know him? He's so dumb."
They continued to mock him and laugh.
William looked helplessly at Betty, who reluctantly said, "You can use my car, but can you drive it? Don't crash it, because you can't afford to pay for it!"
Betty was very annoyed with William now. What if he lost to Clarence?
But there was no choice, she had brought William here, so she had to help.
However, to everyone's surprise, William shook his head and said, "Forget it, I can't afford to drive your car. If I crash it, I can't pay for it."
The whole crowd burst into laughter.
Then William walked over to a corner and spotted an AE86. He said to the guy next to it, "Hey man, can I borrow your car?"
The guy looked at William without a care. "Sure, but be careful, this is an AE86."
William gave an OK gesture and smiled. "Alright, if I crash it, I'll pay you."
Betty saw this and was furious. 'What's wrong with him? Is my Porsche 911 not as good as an AE86?'
Soon, the race began!
Clarence was already in his car. His eyes were burning with confidence. He glanced disdainfully through the car window at William, who was on the adjacent track.
William was still familiarizing himself with the car.
In the control room, a group of people surrounded the big screen, along with various onboard data.
These were all professional data analyses.
Many racing industry analysts were also closely watching.
Of course, they were mainly focused on analyzing Clarence's data because he was going to participate in international races later this year and F1 next year.
The footage from the track and onboard monitoring were also being broadcast live.
Clarence, as always, looked handsome. He had charmed many female racers and car models.
The control room was filled with cheers.
In contrast, William was still in the car, familiarizing himself with the controls, looking at this and that, and muttering, "Left clutch, right brake..."
