Chapter 422 Hitting a Nerve
After ditching the mansion, William headed back to the villa. He hung out with Sarah for a bit, then hit up Mary.
"Hey babe, how's work? Making any headway?" William asked, sounding all worried.
Mary, sounding beat, replied, "Not yet. We're still grinding. Is Sarah out?"
"Yeah, she just knocked out. Want me to come get you?" William offered again.
"Nah, I'm probably pulling a late one tonight. You should crash," Mary said with a tired smile, taking a quick break to chat.
William frowned, clearly stressing. "You're pregnant. You shouldn't be busting your butt. Let me come get you. The team can handle it. If it gets hairy, I'll step in," William said, grabbing his coat and getting ready to bounce.
"No, I'm good. If I'm not there, the new board members will whine," Mary said, feeling the pressure. She had to earn their trust.
"No way, you need more rest. I'm heading to your office now!" William insisted, his tone firm.
Mary's heart skipped a beat, warmth spreading through her.
He was so manly!
He loved her so much.
She felt super happy.
He was her rock.
"Alright, I'll wait for you at the office," Mary agreed and hung up.
Meanwhile, Caius couldn't wait to bail from the mansion. He drove straight to a villa in the 'burbs, in a swanky part of Lindwood City. The villas here weren't as pricey as the high-end spots, but they were still pretty steep.
The villa was decked out with high-end, custom-made furniture. The sofa, made of imported goose down, cost a fortune. The floor tiles were covered with volcanic rock pebbles, supposedly good for your health.
Caius knelt in front of the sofa, head down. A barefoot dude in his fifties, rocking loose white pajamas, sat on the sofa, munching on top-notch foie gras served by a maid.
Caius had been kneeling for a solid ten minutes, not daring to make a peep or lift his head.
Finally, Garth Tovar finished his meal and wiped his mouth with a white napkin, his fingers blinged out with rings, exuding an aura of authority.
"I know everything," he declared.
The butler handed him a black cane. Garth took it and whacked Caius's shoulder hard, the sound of bones cracking loud and clear.
Caius hit the ground, groaning in pain. He struggled to kneel again, his right arm looking busted.
"Useless! I've raised you for years, and a little trick from someone else takes you down!" Garth shouted, standing up with a slight limp.
He went on, "You always brag about being one of the twelve emperors of entertainment gossip, yet you can't last three moves against a young punk! You're worthless!"
Caius didn't argue, his face red, cold sweat dripping.
"It was my fault! I messed up! Please, help me; I can't let this slide!" he pleaded.
Garth slammed the cane on the floor, making him shake.
"Look at the mess you've made! It was such a small thing, and you totally botched it!" Garth scolded, then asked coldly, "Who's the other guy? Did you find out?"
Caius scooted closer to Garth and said, "Yeah. His name's William Jones, married to Mary, the chairman of BK Pharmaceuticals. Word is, he's a nobody, so this must be BK Pharmaceuticals' doing. He's just a puppet!"
It wasn't his fault.
The intel said William was just a useless wimp.
How could he have such skills?
So, Caius figured there had to be a mastermind behind BK Pharmaceuticals.
"William?" Garth murmured, his eyes getting colder. "A wimp? Interesting."
"What's the plan now?" Caius asked, all jittery.
With Garth in the mix, their enemies were toast!
Garth chuckled and said, "Caius, you're still too green. Learn for a few more years."
The butler handed Caius a document. Caius eagerly opened it, shocked by the detailed dirt on BK Pharmaceuticals.
With this, BK Pharmaceuticals was toast!
Caius's face lit up with a cold smile, feeling pumped.
"I've already hit up Sterling. They're holding a press conference at nine tomorrow morning. We'll unveil everything, and BK Pharmaceuticals will be history!" Garth said calmly.
'BK Pharmaceuticals, just wait for your downfall!' Garth sneered inwardly.
At tomorrow's press conference, BK Pharmaceuticals would be destroyed.
Caius flipped through the documents, his face twisted with a sinister grin.
"Why dig so deep?" Caius asked, puzzled.
Garth smiled and said, "It's not about you. Someone else wants to take down BK Pharmaceuticals."
Caius was about to speak but quickly shut up when Garth shot him a glare.
"This chance is thanks to the Medical Association branch. Do a good job, and I'll back you," Garth said.
"Got it," Caius replied, hurrying off to treat his arm.
Meanwhile, William had rolled up to BK Pharmaceuticals.
His heart ached seeing Mary crashed out on the sofa.
If he hadn't handed over the company to her, would she be less wiped out?
William quietly walked over, draped his coat over her, and stayed by her side all night.
At seven in the morning, Mary woke up to find William beside her, the sunlight casting a warm glow on his face.
He looked so determined and handsome.
Mary poked his nose, waking him up.
"Awake?" Mary asked, smiling.
William got up and said, "I'll go grab us some breakfast."
He left the office, seeing people sprawled out from working all night. He bought breakfast for everyone and came back.
He noticed the tense vibe, with everyone huddled around a computer screen, looking super pissed.
Mary, fuming, arms crossed, said, "This is too much! Investigate right away, and ramp up our PR efforts!"
"I got breakfast for everyone. Come and eat," William said, frowning. "What's up? What happened?"
Mary motioned for him to check the screen. William's eyes narrowed as he saw the content, rage boiling inside him.
