Chapter 140 Lori Borrows Money
"This card should have a billion dollars on it," William said casually, raising an eyebrow with a smile.
Mary was stunned. She stared at William suspiciously, her heart pounding.
Then, she rolled her eyes at him, pinched him, and berated him. "If you have a billion dollars, I'll serve you every day from now on."
William's eyes lit up, and he hugged Mary's delicate neck, saying, "You said it, let's go back and write a contract about that."
Mary slapped his hand away and laughed, "Do you really have a billion dollars? If you don't want to say how much is really on this card, fine, but you can't escape explaining today's matter when we get back."
Mary raised an eyebrow and gave William a sidelong glance.
She didn't believe there was a billion dollars on the card. She thought William was just joking.
Even though William had told her before that his family ran the Polaris Sky Restaurant, it shouldn't be worth that much money, right?
Moreover, hadn't William run away from home? Where would he get that much money?
So, Mary didn't take it to heart, but she happily put the card away.
This was something William had given to her, so she had to keep it safe.
William shrugged. Why did no one believe him?
A few days passed peacefully. During these days, William stayed at the hospital with Sarah.
Mary was busy with the collaboration with Sunshine Bay City Hospital Branch, which overwhelmed her.
As for Margaret, she had been unusually quiet. She kept calling William, sweet-talking him and asking him to return to the Smith family's old house.
William knew exactly what Margaret was up to; she must have been eyeing the money he showed at the Hillside Villa Sales Office last time.
Margaret only loved money.
She had been at home these days, looking through all the villa listings in Lindwood City. Now that she had money, the old house was listed with an agent and could sell for over seven million. Adding William's four million and the two million Paul compensated, Margaret could buy a villa and still have plenty left over.
But with more money, Margaret started having other thoughts.
"Tyler, I'm telling you, William must be hiding a lot of money. Didn't you see? He casually took out three million, and he hasn't asked me for it until now. Isn't that strange?"
Margaret knew that if William really wanted the three million back, she couldn't hide it.
But after waiting for several days, William hadn't come to ask her for it, which emboldened her.
Tyler sat on the couch, reading a newspaper, and said, "With your temper, would William dare to ask you? Since the money is William's, you should return it. If you don't want to return it, at least treat him better in the future. After all, he's your son-in-law."
Tyler shook his head helplessly. He knew Margaret's character well. Once the three million was in her hands, it was definitely not going back. William probably knew this too and couldn't be bothered to ask for it.
Margaret was unhappy upon hearing this and said, "Tyler, are you siding with William now? Just because he gave you a painting? If William is so capable, he should buy me a villa himself, not leave it to me to figure it out."
Margaret was upset and started to act unreasonably.
Tyler sighed and said, "You're being unreasonable. Fine, I'm going out to play chess. You just keep scheming. One day, if William and Mary get divorced and he asks for the money back, what will you do?"
With that, Tyler left. His words did make Margaret ponder.
The money was William's. If William and Mary got divorced and he asked for the money back, what would she do?
Was it marital property or premarital property?
No, she had to find out. She called Mary.
"Mary, I need to ask you something," Margaret said, sitting cross-legged on the couch.
"Mom, what is it? I'm at work," Mary sounded a bit tired on the phone.
Margaret thought for a moment and asked, "Mary, do you know how much money William is hiding?"
There was a moment of silence on the other end, then Mary asked suspiciously, "Mom, why are you asking this? You don't want to ask William for money again, do you?"
Margaret said angrily, "Are you stupid? What if William is hiding money and keeping a mistress on the side? He's your husband, you need to keep track of his assets. Go back and ask him if he's hiding any money. You need to know if it's from before or after your marriage. Marital property is split fifty-fifty, so even if you get divorced, you can still get some money."
Margaret kept talking, getting more and more excited.
When William and Mary got married, not a single person from William's family showed up.
'Could it be that William's family is actually wealthy? Is this money something he hid before they got married?' Margaret was lost in thought.
Mary quickly brushed her off. "Alright, Mom. I'll ask him when I get home. If there's nothing else, I need to hang up now. I'm busy."
Without waiting for Margaret to respond, Mary hung up the phone and tossed it onto the desk, sighing helplessly.
How could Margaret be like this?
Thinking about it, Mary took out the card William had given her a few days ago from her wallet, holding it in her hand and looking at it several times.
Could this card really have money on it?
She stood up, put on her blazer, and walked out of the office with high heels clicking.
"Brenda, I'm stepping out for a bit. Call me if anything comes up," Mary said to her assistant, Brenda.
"Sure, do you want to take my car?" Brenda, always cheerful, asked with a smile.
"That'd be great." Mary took the car keys Brenda handed her and headed straight to the parking lot.
Mary was planning to go to the bank to see how much money was on the card William had given her, mainly out of curiosity.
Meanwhile, William came out of the mall with a princess doll almost as tall as he was.
This was something Sarah had been asking for.
Just as he stepped out of the mall, a flashy pink Porsche 911 stopped right in front of him.
Suppressing the urge to curse, William walked around the car, intending to leave. He couldn't afford to mess with rich people.
But the window of the pink Porsche rolled down, revealing a young girl with purple hair. She was wearing sunglasses and had a very curvy figure, giving off an edgy e-girl vibe.
"Get in," the girl said, turning her head to look at William. Her voice was sweet.
William looked around suspiciously and pointed at himself, asking, "Are you talking to me?"
The purple-haired girl got impatient and exited the car. She wore a black bodycon skirt, showing off her long and fair legs, and mid-heeled boots with a white T-shirt on top. She shoved the doll William was carrying into the car and coldly said, "Get in."
William was bewildered but he had no choice but to get in the car.
He recognized it. Craig had driven it last time.
This had to be Alan's daughter, Betty Jordan.
The pink Porsche roared to life and sped away from the mall quickly.
Just as William left, a woman in a black dress with a handbag, Lori, walked out of the mall entrance.
She looked puzzled in the direction the Porsche had left, muttering to herself, "Wasn't that William just now?"
What was going on?
He actually got into a Porsche, so that girl must be...
Lori immediately thought that William had found a mistress. Sure enough, Stanley's investigation was spot on.
How disgusting!
Looking at the video she had recorded on her phone, Lori's lips curled into a malicious smile.
'William, if Mary finds out about this, you're definitely done for. I'm going to ruin you,' thought Lori.
Just then, Lori's phone rang. Seeing the caller ID, she frowned. She hesitated for a long time before answering reluctantly. A woman's beseeching voice immediately came through. "Lori! Where have you been? Why aren't you home? Your dad went out gambling again, lost a few thousand, and got detained. Hurry up and send money, or he'll be beaten to death."
Hearing this nightmarish voice, Lori trembled all over, angry but helpless. "Mom, stop calling me. Just let that gambler get beaten to death. He's not my dad!"
Lori hung up the phone. Her mood plummeted at once.
Her father was a gambling addict. He had lost everything the family had and now owed tens of thousands in debt.
Over the years, Lori had had enough and ran away.
If it weren't for the need to pay off the family debt, Lori wouldn't have become the gold-digger she was today.
She had never told anyone about this because she feared being ridiculed.
But that leech always managed to find her and ask for money.
If she didn't give it to him, he would beat her. Lori had been terrified of being beaten since she was a child.
Feeling depressed and helpless, a few tears slipped from Lori's eyes as she sniffled.
She didn't have a penny on her now.
Call after call came in, and she had no choice but to answer. She shouted, "Alright! Stop bothering me! I'll send the money right away! This is the last time!"
After hanging up, Lori crouched down, covering her face and crying in despair.
After a long time, Lori browsed through her contacts and found the number labeled "Rich Boss." After some hesitation, she finally sent a text message: [Could you lend me five thousand dollars? I'll pay you back next month when I get my salary!]
