Chapter 290 Malicious
"What's wrong with my card?" Margaret asked anxiously, almost pressing her head against the glass.
"I'm sorry, but we can't check the balance on this card at the moment. Our branch system doesn't have the authority to access it. You'll need to go to our main branch," the bank employee apologized.
This was the first time she had encountered such a situation!
The computer screen showed bold red letters: Access Denied!
What was going on?
"How could this be? Please check again. Last time I checked, there was a lot of money in this card," Margaret insisted.
The employee, at a loss, got up to find the manager.
Upon the manager's arrival, he found the "Access Denied" message perplexing.
He had been in the business for twenty years and had never seen this before.
He had Margaret re-enter her password for verification, but access was still denied.
"Please wait a moment. I'll call someone at the main branch," the manager said politely.
Margaret was furious and started cursing, "What kind of crappy bank is this? I can't even check my balance!"
The manager, frustrated, placed a call and, upon receiving the necessary information, promptly escorted Margaret to the VIP lounge.
"Ma'am, please have a seat here. Someone will be with you shortly," the manager said courteously.
Margaret sat in the VIP lounge, feeling quite superior.
It was her first time in a VIP lounge. Could it be that there was a lot of money in the card?
"You better hurry up. I need to get back," Margaret grumbled discontentedly.
After about ten minutes, the door to the VIP lounge opened, and a man and a woman in black business suits walked in.
A female voice asked, "Are you Margaret?"
The woman in the lead, with a serious expression, shoulder-length hair, and a commanding presence, looked like someone from the government.
"Yes, I am. And you are?" Margaret asked.
She was stunned upon seeing the two, as they clearly looked like officials.
"Please cooperate and come with us," the woman said coldly, her demeanor very stern.
This scared Margaret.
Before she could explain, she was escorted out by the two.
Outside the bank parked a black Audi.
Margaret, guilty and panicked, kept asking in the car, "I haven't done anything wrong. What are you doing? I want to get out. I want to go home. This is illegal detention!"
However, the woman in the passenger seat coldly glanced at the rearview mirror and said, "You are involved in an illegal asset transfer case. We need to take you in for investigation. Please cooperate to avoid any unnecessary trouble."
Margaret understood the undertone of her words and fearfully shut her mouth.
She viewed the scenery through the car window, her phone confiscated, leaving her unable to update Mary on her status.
It was at this moment that Margaret thought of William's goodness.
If William were here, he would surely have a solution.
After a while, Margaret noticed something was wrong. The car was heading towards the bridge and into the mountains!
Margaret, panicked, banged on the car door and screamed, "Where are we going? Who are you guys? I want to get out!"
But the man and woman in the front ignored her.
"Shut up! Madam wants to see you," the woman said coldly, her eyes reflecting a chilling light.
Madam?
Margaret was stunned.
When she arrived, she realized where she was.
It was a large and luxurious estate, like a palace.
She nervously followed the two into the central villa of the estate.
In the hall, every 10 feet stood a burly bodyguard in a black suit, hands behind their backs.
All together, there were dozens of bodyguards!
The hall was vast.
Margaret stood there, head down, not daring to move, her legs trembling in fear.
She was terrified. Where was she?
After a long wait, she saw a noble figure descending the spiral staircase, dressed in a black gown and holding a white Persian cat.
Each step of the high heels on the floor tiles felt like a hammer striking Margaret's heart.
It was Jessica!
Margaret was scared out of her wits.
What did she want?
Jessica glanced at Margaret, sat on the sofa, and stroked the Persian cat in her arms, coldly saying, "Margaret, we meet again."
"Ms. Miller, what do you want? I haven't done anything wrong, have I?" Margaret asked in a trembling voice.
She was terrified, afraid that Jessica might hit her again.
Jessica's lips curled into a cold smile, her eyes full of disdain. "I didn't call you here for anything else today. I just want you to do something for me. If you succeed, you'll get five million dollars."
As soon as she finished speaking, Jessica's subordinate brought out five silver cases and placed them in front of Margaret.
The cases opened, revealing stacks of bills!
It was incredibly tempting!
Margaret was thrilled at the sight of the money.
"Is all this for me?" Margaret shamelessly asked again, smiling broadly. She completely forgot the previous times Jessica had punished her.
Jessica's expression changed slightly. She couldn't believe William had lived under such a mother-in-law for three years.
How did he endure it?
"The money is yours only if you succeed," Jessica said flatly, signaling Zoe behind her to bring a small box out.
Margaret, curious, took it and opened it, finding three small bags of white powder inside.
"What is this?" Margaret asked, puzzled.
"You don't need to know what it is. Just give this to William. You only have three chances," Jessica said coldly, her eyes glinting with a chilling light.
Holding the small box, Margaret felt a bit scared. She asked, "This isn't poison, is it? I won't do it. If someone dies, I can't get away with it."
Zoe stepped forward, forcibly placed the box in Margaret's hand, and said coldly, "It's not poison. It won't kill him. At most, it will make him addicted."
Hearing this, Margaret understood and widened her eyes.
She was even more scared, shaking her head frantically in refusal!
Having anticipated her reaction, Jessica snapped her fingers. Then, a subordinate handed over two documents, saying, "Here are two documents. One is a deed plus two properties. The other is a charge against you, enough to keep you in prison for life. Your choice."
As soon as he finished speaking, the two documents were thrown in front of Margaret.
She hurriedly picked them up and glanced at them, realizing she was doomed.
In the end, Margaret had no choice but to sign, taking the money and the small box as she left Cloud Peak Manor.
Jessica stood on the balcony, looking at the clouds in the sky, her eyes slightly closed.
A tall man wearing a half-mask and with a mechanically altered voice approached from behind, asking, "Did you give her the stuff?"
"Yes," Jessica replied.
Once ingested, that substance would slowly destroy even the strongest will.
Mario was an example.
"This is the next directive from the master. Read and burn," the man said coldly, handing a letter to Jessica.
Jessica took it, glanced at it, and then had Zoe burn it. She then asked, "Can the master really help the Miller family take that position?"
The man coldly looked westward and said, "Do not doubt his ability. The Jones family's power is too vast and has hindered the plans of some very important people. The Jones family must be eliminated. This world, whether economically or militarily, must be under his control."
Jessica fell silent.
She recognized the influence of those individuals; caution was necessary, even for her and the Miller family.
The Jones family had risen because of them, but then Mario came along and changed everything.
Now, those people wanted to regain control of the board and the pieces.
This world, after all, was like a chessboard.
Meanwhile, Margaret returned to the villa from Cloud Peak Manor, feeling very uneasy.
She hesitated for a long time before dialing William's number, saying, "William, are you busy? There's something at home. Can you come back for a bit?"
William chatted with Abigail until he received a call, then returned home.
Sarah and Lucy hadn't returned yet; they were probably out shopping. With Lucy accompanying her, William wasn't worried about Sarah.
"Mom, what's going on?" William asked.
Upon returning home, he found Margaret sitting anxiously on the sofa, looking very uneasy.
Seeing William return, Margaret tried to act calm, picked up a glass of water from the table, and handed it to William with a forced smile, saying, "Thirsty? Have some water first."
William didn't understand what Margaret was up to but took the glass.
