Chapter 392 Jeffery Arrives
"What the hell are you talking about?" William chuckled, trying to play it cool.
"Stay put, I'll handle it. It's gonna get messy over there. Not a place for a girl like you. What if you get all freaked out?" William said.
One assassin was down for the count, and the other was dead. William needed to figure out who was behind it, and he wasn't gonna be gentle. Bringing Mary along would just cramp his style.
"But they came to kill me today," Mary shot back.
Her stubborn streak kicked in. She marched up to William, locked eyes with him, and said, "This is my business too. I'm coming!"
"Mary, why don't you ever listen?" William said, frowning and getting a bit ticked off. He stood in front of her, grabbed her arm, and said, "Be good, stay here. I'll take care of it. Trust me."
"No way, I'm going with you," Mary insisted. After what just went down, she was super worried about William.
So, she had to tag along.
William snapped, "How many times do I have to spell it out? You can't be so damn stubborn. You gotta listen to me on this! What if something happens to you again? What about Sarah? What about our baby? You know the mess we were just in. What if there are more of their buddies in the lab?"
Mary was taken aback by William's outburst. She pouted and said, "I'm just worried. Why are you yelling at me?"
William rolled his eyes, frustrated, and looked at Mary, whose eyes were now teary. "Alright. Don't sweat the rest. Just chill here, okay?"
Mary shook her head stubbornly and said, "Nope. If you go, I go."
William was about to lose it and said, "Mary, can you just listen? Don't take everything on yourself. I'll handle this. Can you just wait for my news? If you don't listen, I'll spank you!"
Mary glanced at William and said, "Fine, go ahead."
She turned around and stuck out her butt.
William immediately slapped her butt lightly.
Mary's face turned red with embarrassment. She glared at William. "How dare you hit me?"
Just then, Jeffery burst into the office, looking all worried when he saw William.
"Are you guys okay? I heard something went down in your lab. Mary, you alright?" Jeffery asked, sweating bullets.
A few minutes ago, he got word about the dangerous incident at the lab and rushed over.
When he showed up, William's eyes turned cold.
Why did Jeffery show up now?
"We're fine," Mary replied flatly, showing no other emotions. "How did you know something happened?"
How did Jeffery know about this?
Wasn't the news supposed to be sealed?
"Oh, I heard it from someone," Jeffery explained. Then he saw the marks on Mary's neck, his eyes filled with anger. "Damn it! Have they been caught? Who did this?"
Mary shook her head.
"Two people, one dead and the other seriously hurt. I was just about to go grill them," William said, then looked at Jeffery with interest, a cold smile on his lips. "You got here pretty quick. Does this have anything to do with you?"
Jeffery practically confessed without being asked.
It had just happened, and he rushed in alone.
Could this have nothing to do with him?
"William, what do you mean?!" Jeffery snapped, his face cold, his eyes fierce as he glared at William. "I have a friend working here. He told me, so I rushed over. And now you're suspecting me?"
"Which friend?" William pressed.
At this moment, the door to the boardroom was pushed open again. Abigail rushed in and said apologetically, "Ms. Smith, I'm sorry. I was the one who told Jeffery."
Abigail's sudden appearance threw William off his game.
William shot a cold look at Jeffery, then shifted his gaze to Abigail.
"Nice excuse," William sneered.
Mary was a bit taken aback and asked, "Abigail, you know Jeffery?"
Abigail nodded and said calmly, "Yeah, he helped me out before. We were high school classmates."
William looked at Abigail and Jeffery, frowning, trying to find any cracks in their story.
Could it really have nothing to do with Jeffery?
"Jeffery, I'm warning you, don't push my buttons. If I find out you're involved, you'll regret it!" William declared, stepping forward and blocking Jeffery, his face ice-cold.
Jeffery chuckled, "I don't know what you're talking about. I just heard the news and came over."
Mary, feeling the tension, said, "Alright, William, don't jump to conclusions about Jeffery."
She knew William and Jeffery didn't get along, so she had to step in to cool things down.
Mary suddenly had a thought and asked, "Is this related to what happened at the party last time?"
"What happened at the party?" Jeffery immediately asked.
Could Savannah have acted behind his back?
Mary glanced at William and then filled Jeffery in on the assassination attempt at the party.
After hearing it, Jeffery slammed his fist on the desk in anger. "Damn it. Who would dare do such a thing! Cowardly scum! I won't let them get away with it!"
"I already handled the party incident. It's not the same group as today," William chimed in, crossing his arms and thinking. Glancing at Jeffery, he added, "Even though we've caught two, we can't guarantee the lab is completely safe. There might be more assassins."
William's words hit Mary like a bucket of cold water, sending chills down her spine.
Even though they had caught two, they couldn't guarantee there weren't more hidden threats.
Mary took a deep breath, worriedly asking, "What should we do now?"
Although Mary had been in the business world for years, she had never faced such a dangerous situation. She looked at William, hoping he had a plan.
William seemed to be the one with the say among the three of them, at least in handling this mess.
"Let's wait until I finish the interrogation. Right now, it's all just speculation," William suggested.
He wasn't an expert in interrogation; he could only do his best.
If those two assassins were professional and well-organized, they might end up with nothing. Therefore, William had to prepare for the worst.
William didn't want to argue with Jeffery over this and turned to leave. Just as he was about to go, Mary followed closely behind.
"I told you that you can't go. Stay here!" William snapped, turning around, his face cold.
"No way. I'm your wife," Mary said stubbornly.
She finally found a reason, albeit a flimsy one. She really wanted to see how William would conduct the interrogation and know who was behind it all.
William frowned, feeling helpless, and said, "The interrogation will be brutal. If you can't handle it, leave."
"Alright, I got it," Mary said, annoyed by William's nagging. The reason she wanted to follow him was because he mentioned there might be more assassins hidden. Only by staying with him could she feel safe.
Jeffery also wanted to follow, but William shut him down.
"Jeffery, you stay here and wait," Mary said apologetically. Given the sudden situation, she had to be cautious.
The head of security, Quillon, was pretty efficient. He had cleared out a storage room at the company, and the two bloodied men were thrown in there.
To be precise, one of them was already a cold corpse, and the other was barely alive, unconscious.
Quillon stood at the door and, seeing William and Mary approaching, quickly stepped forward and said, "William, Ms. Smith, they're inside."
