Chapter 66 Stop Pretending, Show Your Cards!

William's voice was soft, carrying an apologetic smile.
Yet it caused everyone in the hospital room to freeze.
Especially Margaret, who was staring at William as if she had seen a ghost, then, feeling as if her body was covered in thorns, she burst out cursing,"William, nobody would mistake you for a mute if you kept quiet! Get out of here!"
Margaret was furious.
This William sure knew how to poke his nose into things that weren't his business.
What did he want to do?
To make a fool of himself?
"Do you behold the son-in-law, then cast your gaze upon yourself; is there room here for your discourse?" Margaret yelled at William with a face full of rage.
Margaret yelled at William furiously, "Do you observe others' son-in-law? Then look at yourself; is there room here for your opinions?"
"If it weren't for your uselessness, would I lose face in front of my family? I am blind to have let a good-for-nothing like you become my son-in-law!"
"Look at your aunt's son-in-law, what he buys for her, and then look at yourself. What have you ever bought for me? Do you even have the face to make snide comments here? Go back if you want to, but I'm not going back!"
Faced with Margaret's roaring, William lowered his head, feeling utterly helpless.
His image as a good-for-nothing was deeply ingrained in his mother-in-law's mind.
Dorothy Jackson watched the drama unfold with a sneer, her face growing increasingly scornful.
She hypocritically tried to mediate. "Do refrain from consistently directing your ire towards William; as the adage goes, one marries into the household they choose. The fault does not lie with William Jones; rather, if blame is to be assigned, let it rest upon Mary for her initial selection."
The blame shifted toward Mary.
This aunt was no pushover, stirring up trouble so blatantly.
Upon hearing this, Margaret was even more infuriated.
That incident three years ago had already made it difficult for her to raise her head in front of her family.
Now, thinking back, it was her daughter who insisted on marrying William.
And now, as it turned out, he was indeed a good-for-nothing.
"It's all because of you, you stubborn girl, insisting on marrying this good-for-nothing. Now look, even I can't face going back to my own family."
Margaret cursed like a fishwife, her heart filled with anger. "If you still recognize me as your mother, divorce this good-for-nothing William right now! There's no place in this home for both him and me!"
"Mom, can you stop? What's the point of bringing up the past over and over?"
Mary also felt uncomfortable, losing face being spoken to like this by her mother, especially in front of Dorothy and Jeffery.
"Jeffery, I'm sorry; perhaps you should leave first." Mary turned and said to Jeffery with a smile.
Jeffery nodded and left the hospital room.
Indeed, it was awkward.
After all, he was an outsider.
Before departing, he shot a provocative glare at William, who stood silently in the corner.
It was truly unimaginable to see William, the once celebrated campus genius, now fallen to such a state.
Seeing that Mary didn't agree to divorce, Margaret didn't care anymore. She threw herself on the ground, wailing. "You are heartless. Your father and I raised you for so many years; is this how you repay us? How could you marry this good-for-nothing? I must have sinned in my past life to have given birth to such an ungrateful daughter."
Watching Margaret throw a tantrum on the floor, Mary felt distressed and hurried over to pull up Margaret.
But Margaret refused to stand, continuously pointing at William and cursing sorrowfully.
Mary was at a loss and decided to ignore her. "Margaret, I'm not going to divorce William."
"Mary, have you gone mad? Do you really want to spend your life with this good-for-nothing?"
In Margaret's eyes, a worthless man like William should not have married her daughter.
If she had insisted on not letting them marry and found a good man for her, she would be living a life of luxury just like her sister by now.
"I haven't gone mad. Although William has failed in his business ventures over the past three years and fallen on hard times, he has never complained, and he has been good to me. I won't divorce him." Mary made her stance clear and sneaked a glance at William.
She found that William was still grinning foolishly at her.
Couldn't this guy see that her  mother was very dissatisfied with him?
However, he was still there, smiling foolishly.
All this time, Mary had been patient with William, thinking she would divorce him.
But then, when that incident happened suddenly one day, and today, when she saw that video, Mary realized that she cared about William, and she would still be very anxious for him.
"William, you once said to give you one more year, and you would give me an unlimited future, is that true?"
"It's true."
"I don't want you to be constantly ridiculed as a good-for-nothing, I don't want you to become the butt of other people's jokes, I want those who look down on you to regret it. Can you do that?"
Mary's eyes were red, staring intently at William.
"I can."
William simply uttered two words before turning and leaving.
From beginning to end, Mary was concerned about how William was doing, rather than herself.
Behind her, Margaret's roaring voice came,"William, if you leave now, never come back! You are a good-for-nothing. What are you trying to prove?"
However, William paid no heed.
He had made a promise to Mary, and he intended to keep it.
Just as he stepped out of the hospital, the sound of a car horn startled William.
A BMW X8, the top configuration.
Jeffery sat inside, his expression cold and proud.
William frowned slightly, walked over, and asked coldly. "What do you want?"
Jeffery stepped out of the car, took off his sunglasses, and put them in his chest pocket, sneering. "I felt embarrassed for you back there in the hospital room. How do you even stand it?"
It turned out he was just looking for an opportunity to mock him. William couldn't be bothered and turned to leave.
But Jeffery blocked his path, mocking. "William, it's been three years. What have you given Mary? Let go, divorce Mary, and I will give her a better future."
Jeffery looked down on William.
Too useless.
However, William coldly said, "Jeffery, do you think you're rich? Do you think Mary would like to be with you?"
Jeffery sneered. "At least I can make millions a year. What about you? A garbage delivery guy, earning such a meager salary every month. What can you give Mary? What can you give Sarah? The one million for the surgery, can you afford it?"
"Millions?" William scoffed. "Jeffery, you're just a pitiful joke in my eyes. I advise you not to provoke me and stop aiming for Mary, or else I will make you regret it!"
Jeffery was taken aback, followed by a loud laugh.
"William, do you even know what you're saying? You want me to regret it, just based on you, a good-for-nothing?"
Jeffery laughed, completely disappointed with William, who was nothing more than a loser.
"William, you used to be my friend. Back in college, I thought you were brilliant, everyone's idol. But now? Look at yourself. What right do you have to speak to me like that? Make me regret it? Come on then." Jeffery taunted.
William clenched his fists, holding back his impulse.
However, Jeffery intensified his provocation, pushing William several times and cursing, "Good-for-nothing! I'm officially telling you today, I've set my sights on Mary! If you dare, try to stop me!"
After speaking, Jeffery got into his car with great satisfaction.
The brand new BMW X8 drove away from William, nearly hitting him.
Watching Jeffery's BMW disappear, William took out his phone from his pocket and then silently put it back.
This was the last chance he was giving Jeffery.
The last one.
Afterward, William hailed a cab and headed straight to the Golden Age Group building.
This time, under the secretary's guidance, William went directly to the Chairman's lounge.
Since that incident, the company had conducted training, and nearly everyone recognized William, but it was confidential.
George came in with a face full of smiles and respect. "William, what brings you to my office at this time?"
William stood before the floor-to-ceiling window, overlooking the streets of Lindwood City, his heart overwhelmed with emotion.
"In a few days, it's Mary's grandfather's seventieth birthday. Prepare a generous gift on my behalf." William said.
George immediately nodded. "Understood."
Without lingering, William returned to the hospital.
Margaret and Dorothy Jackson had already left.
When he saw Mary, William noticed her complexion was poor, and she looked worried.
"What's wrong, Mary?" William asked.
Mary's expression was gloomy, and she glanced at William. "Jeffery just called me. He said that Charles has another patient to treat and won't have time to see Sarah for the next half a month."
So Mary was worried about this.
"Mary, do you want to know who Charles's other patient is?" William suddenly said to Mary.
