Chapter 173 I'll Be Your Support!
As Margaret saw Mary about to drink from the bowl, she felt both anxious and panicked.
'Mary, I'm sorry, but I have no choice. You and William won't have a good ending. Since you won't abort the child, I'll be the bad guy!' Margaret thought to herself, steeling her resolve.
Mary was about to drink when suddenly the phone rang.
She hesitated for a moment, put down the bowl, and glanced at her phone. It was a call from her company.
"Mom, I'll drink it later. I need to take this call."
Mary quickly stood up, answered the phone, and ran out.
Margaret was frantic and shouted, "Mary, drink it first and then take the call."
But Mary had already run out.
Margaret was furious, just one small step away.
Later, when Mary returned, she grabbed her bag, kissed Sarah, and left hurriedly.
"Hey, Mary, take the medicine," Margaret said anxiously.
Mary looked back, her eyes showing resistance, "No need, Mom. Maybe next time. I have something urgent at work."
With that, Mary jogged out of the hospital.
Margaret was so angry that she stomped her feet. She had spent the whole afternoon peraparing the medicine, and now it was wasted.
"Grandma, don't be mad at Mom. She's very busy and tired from work."
Little Sarah, with her sweet, innocent voice, was sitting on the hospital bed playing with a doll, looking adorably innocent.
Margaret turned around, walked towars Sarah. She poked Sarah's forehead with her finger harshly and gritted her teeth as she scolded, "You little brat, it's all because of you! Your dad is useless, and you're a little brat! Your mom is pregnant again. When she has the baby, your dad and mom won't want you anymore. They'll throw you in the trash, and you'll starve to death!"
As Sarah heard these words, her big, watery eyes immediately filled with tears, and she started crying loudly, "Mommy, Daddy!"
Margaret, still not satisfied, yanked Sarah's hair and scolded, "Cry again, and I'll beat you to death, you little brat!"
Sarah was so scared that she sobbed and bit her lip, looking very pitiful and heart-wrenching.
At this moment, the nurse, Lucy Barnes, hurriedly ran in. As she saw Margaret treating Sarah so roughly, she got furious immediately.
"Who are you? Who gave you the right to bully the child?"
Lucy, a tall woman, tenderly held Sarah in her arms, comforting her, "Don't cry, Sarah, don't cry."
Sarah buried her face in Lucy's shoulder, crying her heart out.
Margaret was angry right now. Upon seeing the nurse being so sharp-tongued, she pointed at her and scolded fiercely, "Who are you? Do you have any right to speak here? You're just a nurse looking after the child. How dare you talk to me like that?"
Lucy, retorted as soon as she heard Margaret talking back, "It's wrong for you to scold the child like that. Who are you, anyway? If you don't leave, I'll call for help!"
Margaret sneered. "You're just a nurse hired by my daughter. Do you believe I can have my daughter fire you?"
Lucy was taken aback by this.
"Who are you?" Lucy asked tentatively.
"I'm her grandmother. Now, are you scared? Apologize to me right now, or I'll have my daughter fire you immediately."
Margaret crossed her arms, raised her chin, and looked very arrogant.
Lucy was furious.
This unreasonable, mean-spirited middle-aged woman was actually Sarah's grandmother?
How could there be such a vicious grandmother?
No wonder she had never seen her visit the child before. It was always William and Mary taking turns.
Now Lucy finally understood why.
With a mother like this, how could William and Mary live a happy life.
"Sorry, I'm not apologizing! In fact, you should apologize to Sarah! As her grandmother, the cruel words you just said have seriously hurt Sarah's feelings."
Lucy stood her ground, arguing with reason.
She wasn't afraid at all.
The argument naturally attracted the attention of other patients and their families outside the hospital room.
People were all talking about it.
"Isn't that the child's grandmother? So cruel!"
"Poor kid, how can she scold her like that? I heard it just now, so vicious!"
"I remember the girl's parents are very nice and easygoing. How could they have such a mean mother?"
Margaret couldn't stand the murmurs and stares from everyone.
She walked straight up to Lucy and slapped her angrily, shouting, "Who do you think you are? Our family matters are none of your business. You're just a nurse hired by my daughter. Know your place and don't meddle, or I'll beat up, got it?"
Lucy was stunned, her cheek turning red from the slap.
Margaret was unbelievably vicious and mean.
But with Sarah in her arms, she held back.
"I get paid by your son-in-law and daughter, not you. You must apologize to Sarah today, or you won't leave!"
Lucy was kind-hearted, she couldn't stand Margaret's behavior.
She was like a woman with a heart of stone.
Lucy had never seen someone treat their own granddaughter so harshly.
Margaret, now being scolded by the crowd, was very displeased. She glared at Lucy and slapped her again.
Margaret cursed, "You bitch, say one more word and see what happens. I'll tear your mouth apart. You're a poor wretch, working for our money, so you should know the rules. My daughter is the chairman of BK Pharmaceuticals. Who do you think you are to talk to me like that?"
Lucy's cheeks were red from the two slaps, but she stubbornly held her head high and said, "I work for your family, but I can also quit. You can't humiliate me like this. I'll call William right now and resign."
As Margaret heard it, she panicked a bit. What if William found out?
So, when she saw Lucy take out her phone, she slapped it out of her hand. Her phone smashed on the ground and the screen had shattered.
"You dare to call? I'll beat you up!"
Margaret grabbed Lucy's hair and started pulling, cursing madly, "You bitch, don't you know the rules? William's money is my money, my daughter's money is my money. How dare you talk back to me? I'll beat you up!"
The crowd outside had witnessed all what happened but they didn't dare to intervene.
They were just there to watch the drama unfold, not intened to get involved.
Lucy held tightly to the crying Sarah, enduring Margaret's punches and kicks.
In the end, Margaret pinned Lucy to the bed and slapped her several times.
Lucy had already placed Sarah to the side. Her face was full of handprints and her uniform was torn.
She bit her lip, with her eyes full of tears and grievance.
"You're too much of a bully."
Lucy covered her mouth and cried out. She ran out of the room.
Margaret, feeling triumphant, pointed at the crowd at the door and scolded, "What are you looking at? Get out of here!"
The crowd were angry, but they didn't dare to act.
After scolding the onlookers, Margaret glanced at Sarah, who was standing in the corner sobbing, she pointed at her viciously. "I'll deal with you next time."
With that, she turned and left.
Meanwhile, Lucy ran out of the hospital to the garden, covering her face and crying her heart out.
She felt so wronged.
Lucy had never been humiliated like this before. She was poor, but she had dignity.
What right did Margaret have to bully her like that?
"What's wrong, Lucy?"
Suddenly, William walked over, with a lunchbox and some fruit in his hand.
Upon hearing William's voice, Lucy quickly turned her back and wiped her tears.
"Nothing."
Lucy forced a smile, her eyes red and swollen from crying.
William frowned and said, "Nothing? Look at you, crying like this. Tell me, who bullied you? I'll stand up for you."
"Who else? It was Margaret!"
Suddenly, a young nurse walked over, glaring at William, "She just beat Lucy in front of everyone."
"Oh, stop it. William, don't listen to her. It's not true."
Lucy tugged at the young nurse's sleeve, signaling with her eyes.
Margaret?
"What happened?" William asked worriedly.
The young nurse couldn't stand it anymore. "You don't want me to say it, but I will. William, I'm telling you, your mother-in-law is really awful. She just..."
After hearing what the young nurse said, William got furious suddenly, his whole body radiating coldness.
He grabbed Lucy and said coldly, "Come on, I'll be your support."
