Chapter 406 Mother-in-Law

Seeing Margaret's eager face, William sneered inwardly.

"Come on, quit being all secretive and just spill it," Margaret pushed, clearly dying to know.

"What if I told you I have a trillion dollars?" William said, grinning.

Margaret froze for a sec, her happy face turning icy real quick.

'What the heck is William on about? Is he yanking my chain? A trillion dollars, my foot!' she fumed inside.

But she had to keep her cool. William was the big shot at Crescent Investment Group.

Even if he wasn't rolling in hundreds of billions, he had to be worth a few billion at least.

"Cut the crap, just tell me straight, how much dough do you really have?" Margaret asked again, trying to stay calm.

William chuckled, got up, and said, "Got other stuff to do."

With that, he walked out the door.

As Margaret and Delia watched him leave, their excited faces turned cold.

"Margaret, did you see how William acted? He totally disrespects you," Delia grumbled.

Margaret saw it too, thinking, 'No wonder William didn't care about this villa. Dude's loaded.'

"Disrespect me? I'm his mother-in-law! Just wait. No matter how much cash he's got, it'll be mine eventually!" Margaret snapped.

'Does he really think he's all that just 'cause he's rich? He'll always be my son-in-law! It's only right he forks over the cash!' Margaret thought to herself.

About an hour later, Mary came downstairs, looking sharp in a white suit.

Margaret saw her and casually asked, "Mary, where you headed? Aren't you gonna rest a bit more?"

Mary replied, "Off to the office."

Margaret nodded, watching Mary leave. Then she jumped up from the sofa, ran to the door to make sure Mary was gone, and headed back inside.

Coincidentally, Delia came out of her room, carrying a bulging bag. She said, "Margaret, I'm heading out for a bit."

Margaret took one look and knew it was stuffed with the skincare products William had bought.

Delia often snuck out a few boxes to sell.

Margaret turned a blind eye. They were family, after all, and she couldn't really say anything.

"Oh, okay, just be back later," Margaret said with a smile.

Soon, Margaret was the only one left in the villa.

Lucy had taken Sarah to a nearby amusement park and wouldn't be back for a while.

Seeing the coast was clear, Margaret got excited and quickly ran upstairs to William and Mary's bedroom.

She started rummaging through everything.

She was hunting for a bank card.

With such a vast fortune, she guessed that William had to deposit his savings into a bank account.

Sure enough, she found a bank card.

"Gotcha," she said, happily pocketing the card and heading downstairs.

But just as she was about to leave the bedroom, she spotted a ring in the drawer.

Her eyes lit up.

William had hidden some valuable stuff; how had she missed this before?

Margaret walked over, took out the ring, and admired it for a bit.

Since she found it, William probably didn't care about it.

So she pocketed the ring too and went downstairs.

Coincidentally, William came back and saw Margaret sneaking downstairs with her hand in her pocket.

Margaret panicked when she saw William, forcing a smile to hide her nerves, and said, "Why'd you come back so suddenly?"

William nodded indifferently and went upstairs without giving Margaret much attention.

Seeing William go upstairs, Margaret felt a mix of relief and anxiety, and she plopped down on the sofa.

Five minutes passed.

William didn't come down.

Ten minutes passed.

William still didn't come down.

Margaret finally relaxed, took a sip of water from the cup on the table.

But suddenly, a cold voice came from behind her.

"Margaret," William called chillingly.

Startled, Margaret choked on her water. She coughed a few times and stood up in a panic, asking, "What's up?"

William stood at the top of the stairs, walked down, and stared coldly at Margaret, asking, "Did you go into my bedroom?"

Margaret denied immediately, "No. Why would I go into your bedroom?"

Then she suddenly raised her voice. "Oh right, Lucy went into your bedroom to clean this morning. Is something missing? I told you, Lucy isn't a good guy, living in our house and still stealing things!"

Margaret tried to throw all the blame on Lucy.

William gave her a cold look and turned to leave.

Seizing the moment while William went upstairs, Margaret hurried into Lucy's room and hid the ring.

After thinking for a moment, she placed it conspicuously on Lucy's desk.

Only then did she let out a sigh of relief. Then she ran out of Lucy's room and leisurely sat in the living room, eating the dessert.

Meanwhile, William was in a panic; the Noble Command ring was missing!

How could this be?

He had turned the entire bedroom upside down but couldn't find the ring.

It was his fault for leaving such an important item in the bedroom.

At that moment, Lucy returned with Sarah.

Margaret seemed intent on stopping Lucy from entering the bedroom, loudly calling out, "Oh, Sarah's back? Come here. I have some cupcakes."

She hugged Sarah, who sweetly sat beside her and said, "Thank you."

Seeing Lucy about to enter the bedroom, Margaret quickly called out, "Lucy, clean up here."

Lucy nodded and started tidying up the coffee table.

William came downstairs and asked, "Lucy, did you clean the bedroom this morning?"

Lucy nodded, "Yes, I did a bit of cleaning."

"Did you see a ring?" William asked again.

Lucy looked puzzled and shook her head, "No, I just did some basic cleaning. I didn't touch anything else."

William found it strange and turned to leave.

However, Margaret immediately stood up, pretending to be very concerned, and asked, "William, is something missing?"

Then she turned and slapped Lucy hard in the face, pointing at her nose and yelling, "Tell the truth, did you steal something? You wretch, living in our house and stealing from us? Confess, or I'll call the police and have you arrested!"

Lucy held her cheek, tears welling up in her eyes, staring at Margaret in disbelief. "I didn't steal anything. I just cleaned up a bit!"

William frowned; he didn't believe Lucy would steal his ring.

But Margaret wouldn't let up. "What do you mean? I saw you sneaking around this morning, and you say you didn't steal?"

Scared, Sarah immediately clung to Lucy's leg, crying and defending her, "Lucy wouldn't be a thief. It wasn't her."

Margaret glared at Sarah and accused Lucy, "She's the only outsider in this house. If it wasn't her, who else could it be?"

"Daddy, Lucy wouldn't be a thief," Sarah cried out, running to William and clutching his pants.

Lucy, with her head down, wiped her tears and sobbed, "I didn't steal anyhing. You're falsely accusing me."

"Fine, let's search your room!" Margaret said, sneering inwardly.

"Search all you want. I didn't steal anything!" Lucy said stubbornly, refusing to admit it.

Margaret had been waiting for this, leading William to Lucy's room. She opened the door and said, "You won't admit it? If we find the ring, you're out of this house!"

With that, she rushed in, pretended to search, and then went straight to the desk where she had placed the ring, shouting, "Still saying you didn't steal? Look, William, is this it?"

William immediately saw the ring, his brow furrowing.

Lucy panicked, crying and sobbing, "No, it's not me. I really didn't steal it."

Lucy felt deeply wronged; she would never steal anything.

Being falsely accused like this made her heartbroken, and she cried uncontrollably.

Margaret, however, gloated and scolded, "Busted, and you're still trying to deny it? I'm calling the cops right now!"

"William, it's really not me. I didn't even know where it was," Lucy insisted, her  eyes red from crying.

"Who are you trying to fool? The ring was in the drawer..." Margaret blurted out and quickly covered her mouth.

Stunned, William turned to Margaret with cold eyes. "How did you know it was in the drawer?"

"Isn't that obvious? Where else would you keep such a thing?" Margaret stammered, inching towards the door.

"Stop right there!" William shouted angrily, grabbing Margaret by the back of her neck. "Margaret, you've really caused enough trouble. Have you forgotten my warnings? Do you really think I can't deal with you?"

Margaret, knowing she was exposed, acted fearless. "What do you want to do? Hit me? Kill me? I'm your mother-in-law!"

"Damn it! I must teach you a lesson!" William roared and slapped Margaret hard in her face.
