Chapter 387 Sudden Incident
William was totally floored by what he just heard.
"Wait, what? Is she still alive?" he blurted out.
"Boss, after digging deeper into her records, I found out they've been messed with. I don't know who did it yet, but there's a good chance she's still kicking," Benjamin reported.
Tears welled up in William's eyes. After years of guilt, this news hit him right in the feels.
"Dig deeper! Find out everything! I don't care who's behind this, just get to the bottom of it!" William ordered, taking a deep breath. His eyes turned icy, radiating a chilling vibe. He knew if Ellie's info was tampered with, someone shady was pulling the strings.
But no matter their reasons, William was hell-bent on uncovering the truth!
Whoever messed with Ellie was gonna pay big time!
Just as William hung up, a voice piped up from behind him. "William, what are you up to?"
Nancy, in a loose, breezy nightgown, lounged on the rocking chair, grinning at him.
"What are you doing here?" William asked, frowning. Had she overheard anything?
"Nothing much, just need a favor," Nancy said with a cheeky smile, not even trying to be polite.
"What is it?" William asked.
"My classmate's birthday is coming up. Can you hit up George and borrow his Rolls-Royce to take me there?" Nancy asked, blinking and staring at William.
She'd been obsessing over this all day. She must get William to say yes.
Just imagine rolling up to the party in a Rolls-Royce. How magnificent would that be?
All her classmates would be green with envy!
"No way. Go back to bed," William shot her down, knowing exactly what she was up to.
Nancy was an adult, but she still had this crazy competitive streak.
"If you don't help me, I'll tell Mary!" Nancy threatened.
"Tell her what?" William asked, curious about her game.
"Well, I heard your whole phone convo just now," Nancy said with a sly grin, looking like she had him cornered.
She hadn't caught who William was talking to, but a late-night call was definitely fishy.
Had to be an affair!
Especially with Mary being pregnant, William must be cheating!
So, Nancy hinted but didn't spell it out, keeping her ace in the hole.
William's heart skipped a beat. Nancy had heard something. What now?
"Fine, I agree, but you gotta promise to keep it hush-hush!" William said sternly.
Nancy got up, swinging her legs, and happily high-fived William. "Got it, William. Your secret's safe with me."
With that, she strutted away smugly.
William watched her go, feeling suspicious. Did Nancy really hear anything?
It felt like she was bluffing.
The next morning, Margaret woke William up early, dragging him to add her name to the property deed.
After everything was done, she cried and insisted on keeping the deed to prevent William from removing her name later.
William didn't bother to argue, ran some errands, and then headed to BK Pharmaceuticals.
Mary had already gone back to work since the company was swamped lately.
Walking into Mary's office, William saw her sitting in a chair in a black suit, sunlight perfectly highlighting her shoulders. A serene joy filled his heart.
"Honey, what do you need me for?" William asked with a cheeky smile, plopping down on the sofa.
Mary gave him a look, closed the project plan in her hand, and said, "Did you come to work just to nap?"
William shrugged. "Not much to do, just killing time."
Mary put away her emotions and looked seriously at him, "What do you think about what happened last night?"
Last night's assassination attempt was a wake-up call for her, making her realize that many people wanted to kill her.
William looked at Mary, rubbing his chin. "Let me think about it."
He pondered, 'How should I explain this? I definitely can't tell Mary the truth. Damn it! Endymion has caused me so much trouble.'
Ten minutes ticked by, and William stayed silent, chin propped on his hand, eyes shut.
Frustrated, Mary scowled and yelled, "William, you dozed off again!"
William finally snapped out of it and lazily said, "I know, don't sweat it. I got this."
"You? What can you do?" Mary doubted, not entirely convinced. After all, it was an assassination attempt.
Stuff like that only happened in movies.
"I have my ways. Chill," William said, stretching.
Realizing that William didn't want to spill the beans, Mary didn't push but asked worriedly, "Jeffery just invited me to dinner. Should I go?"
"Jeffery invited you to dinner?" William blurted out, raising an eyebrow, sensing there might be more to it.
Was Jeffery trying to invite Mary or test him?
"Yeah, should I go or not?" Mary asked, looking at William.
Unconsciously, she felt she couldn't do without him.
"Go! Free meal? Why not?" William said. "Just remember to take me with you. We haven't had a sit-down in a while."
"You really think so?" Mary asked.
William had always been at odds with Jeffery, entirely because of her.
Mary knew this but couldn't do anything.
After all, Jeffery had really helped her and William a lot in the past.
William answered with a smile, "Yeah, I'm not a petty guy. Maybe Jeffery wants to bury the hatchet."
Mary rolled her eyes at him, stood up, and said, "I'm heading to the lab. Wanna come?"
William shook his head. He hated the lab; it was boring and dull.
"Alright then, remember to take Sarah for her follow-up this afternoon," Mary said as she walked out of the office.
"Be careful. You're pregnant," William reminded her worriedly. After sitting in the office and mulling over his plan for a while, he got up and left.
Back in the marketing department, he started chatting about a game with a few colleagues.
As his colleagues were animatedly talking, a faint sound caught William's ear.
And then the entire building shook slightly.
Someone asked, "An earthquake?"
As his colleagues were puzzled and analyzing the source of the sound, they saw William's face turn serious.
In an instant, William leaped from his seat and rushed straight to the lab.
The lab was the heart and the most confidential place of BK Pharmaceuticals.
It served as the research hub for developing new anti-cancer drugs, with billions of dollars invested.
William had personally seen its top-notch security and advanced technology features.
Only a select few had unrestricted access to it. All the data on anti-cancer drug research was stored there.
Mary used to inspect the lab daily.
However, due to her recent hospitalization, Brenda had taken over her responsibilities.
Today was Mary's first day back at work, so it was natural for her to check on things.
After yesterday's assassination attempt, Mary had ramped up security at the lab early that morning, with cameras monitoring every corner.
The new anti-cancer drug was ready to hit the market, capturing everyone's attention.
It represented a lucrative opportunity, the future of the pharmaceutical industry with boundless potential.
Faced with the immense profits of new anti-cancer drugs, someone's rationality seemed to wane. The new medication became the seed of their criminal ambition.
In the shadows, some people were always watching BK Pharmaceuticals, ready to strike at any moment.
The company's new anti-cancer drug was clearly their prime target.
These individuals disregarded daylight and security measures. To them, profit was the only thing worth pursuing and believing in.
Although the lab had exploded, the shockwave was contained by the high-tech security system, preventing it from reaching the surface.
BK Pharmaceuticals' employees thought it was just another nearby blast. After all, such things happened frequently with nearby construction site, so they continued working as usual.
Only William rushed out immediately.
He knew right away where the sound came from—the lab.
Mary had just gone to the lab!
