Chapter 389 The Hidden Manipulator

Realizing Mary was in deep trouble, William was about to save her.

But the dude in front of him wasn't having it and blocked William's way, trying to keep him from helping Mary.

"Damn it!" William cursed under his breath and swiftly slashed with his dagger, slicing through the person's wrist in one fluid motion.

Seeing the cut on his wrist, the guy knew he was toast.

He wasn't built for long fights. His last-ditch effort to take William down flopped, sealing his fate as one destined for failure.

The thought of the mastermind behind all this made him shiver. He knew failing meant a death.

Now, his only hope was his accomplice who had Mary held hostage. This accomplice had been lurking in the research facility for ages, and intel said there was another player in the game. But this other person was so deep undercover, even he didn't know who they were.

The man pressed firmly on his wrist wound to stop the bleeding.

He could feel his life slipping away, but he had to suck it up and launch a desperate attack.

His wild fighting style managed to block William's path. William, pissed and frantic, attacked even harder.

"Damn it, you are dead!" William roared.

His roar, sounding like it came straight from hell, sent chills down everyone's spine.

Meanwhile, the researchers around them were scrambling for an exit. Finally, someone found a button and hit it without thinking. Out of nowhere, a heavy metal wall dropped from the lab ceiling.

With a deafening crash, the wall cut off the entrance from the central control panel, causing another wave of panic.

The metal wall was thick and heavy, dropping so fast that one poor soul couldn't dodge in time and got their arm crushed, leaving it a bloody mess. Their screams of agony pierced everyone's hearts.

William, unable to see what was happening inside, got even more furious. His eyes turned red as he kicked the guy in front of him and yelled at the panicked crowd, "Who the hell pressed what just now?"

Someone timidly replied, "It was the person inside the wall who hit the button."

In other words, there was no way to open the metal wall from this side!

In a fit of rage, William started beating the guy he had already slashed crazily!

His ferocity stunned everyone present. He seemed like a demon, yet he had just given them a glimmer of hope just now.

The main door was now open, but no one dared to leave. Unsure if there were more accomplices outside, they had to find the rumored secret passage to ensure a safe escape.

When the metal wall came down, Mary dodged to the side, freeing herself from the guy's grip. She didn't look back and didn't see who had grabbed her.

However, she caught a whiff of a familiar scent from the person but didn't think much of it.

She was now crouched in a gap between the control panel and the wall, right under the intruder's nose.

On this side of the metal wall, it was just Mary, the guy who had taken her hostage, and the unlucky person who had triggered the mechanism.

The air on this side of the wall was noticeably better, and the view was much clearer. The unlucky person stared at the central control panel, gasping for breath, his eyes wide with horror as if he had seen something terrifying.

He raised his hand in disbelief, shouting, "You! It's you!"

From her limited vantage point, Mary could only see the guy's horrified expression but not the face of the intruder.

Seeing his shocked look, Mary was also super curious. The person who had taken her hostage walked steadily toward the unlucky guy.

As the intruder moved closer, the unlucky guy's face grew paler.

He seemed to see something terrifying, begging for mercy and shrinking away, gradually moving out of Mary's sight. Mary, huddled in her corner, could only hear his continuous pleas.

The sickening sound of knife slicing through an artery reverberated through the room, followed instantly by a gruesome spray of blood splattering across the metal wall.

After offing the unlucky guy, the dude who had Mary hostage turned and started heading toward her hiding spot.

Terrified, Mary clutched the backup hard drive tightly, thinking that even if she had to smash it, she couldn't let it fall into the wrong hands!

But the guy didn't bother searching for her. Instead, he stood in front of the screen and started trying to crack the password of their main computer.

As a secret research base, the main computer's password was complicated, making it super tough to crack. The guy had only five tries, and if he messed up more than five times, the system would self-destruct.

What he didn't know was that in the earlier chaos, Mary had already kicked off the system's self-destruct sequence. So, even if he nailed the password, he wouldn't get any useful info.

The guy punched in the password twice without hesitation. From the sound, Mary could tell this dude was definitely from their lab, or someone high up had sold them out.

Only a few people knew the main computer's password, and Mary was relieved she had already activated the self-destruct sequence. The password had been changed, and even she didn't know what it was now. The new password would be uploaded to the headquarters' mainframe, encrypted layer by layer, and then sent back to the researchers.

"Password incorrect."

"Password incorrect."

After two failed attempts, only three chances remained. The guy, visibly rattled, looked around.

He was sure Mary was nearby. The metal wall had dropped so suddenly that there was no way she could've escaped; she had to be here!

So, he started strolling leisurely, stopping in front of each cabinet and asking, "Are you in here? Don't hide, I know you can hear me..."

His voice was raspy and unsettling, like nails on a chalkboard, causing anxiety and discomfort.

He wanted to find Mary because he had seen her at the central control panel during the chaos caused by his buddy, Viperstrike. He had seen Mary take something from the control panel, and she was the last person to touch it. Most importantly, Mary was the owner of the lab, so finding her would surely help him crack the password.

He had taken on another identity to infiltrate the lab and had realized how influential Mary was from his observations. She was a key figure in the lab, so finding her would turn the situation around.

Moreover, William, who was beating up his buddy, had stopped because of Mary, indicating that Mary held special significance to him.

He thought to himself, 'Damn it, why was today's mission such a nightmare?'

At first, Ghosthawk, the assassin, had the patience to search, but the lab was huge. Searching row by row, cabinet by cabinet, would take forever.

Ghosthawk could hear how badly Viperstrike, his buddy, was getting thrashed on the other side of the metal wall. Although he had no deep bond with Viperstrike, they were on the same mission. He had thought it would be a cakewalk, but it turned out to be a big mess. However, he wouldn't let his buddy die on such a mission.

So, he lost his patience and kicked the lab table in frustration.

The sound of metal scraping against the tiles was particularly jarring, making Mary's heart skip a beat.

Mary covered her mouth and nose even tighter, afraid of making any sound.

This guy was so dangerous; facing him meant certain death!

What should she do?

Meanwhile, the air had cleared up here, and the smoky haze had dissipated. Ghosthawk scanned the area meticulously.

He had a thought and stepped onto a table. His eyes, sharp as an eagle's, missed nothing. He knew that if Mary had moved, she would leave traces. As his gaze swept the room and returned to the central control panel, he suddenly noticed a flash of light in the gap beneath it. Seeing the glint, he smiled cruelly.
