Chapter 397 Ellie Contacts Mary
Quillon and his crew had totally scoped out the place earlier, making sure no one was left in the lab.
So, how the heck did this dude just pop up outta nowhere?
While Quillon and his team were checking each lab, this sneaky guy slipped in through the main door. Like a freakin' gecko, he jumped up, spread his limbs, and stuck to the ceiling without anyone noticing.
Meanwhile, Quillon and his crew had kicked back in the duty room to chill.
They weren't gonna check again, and there were still folks in the monitoring room. As long as there was any anomalies in the lab, the surveillance would catch it, so they were feeling pretty confident.
But the guys in the monitoring room, glued to the screens, had no clue their footage was messed with. What they were seeing was just a still image.
So, no matter what went down in the lab, they wouldn't catch it.
The figure that suddenly showed up in the lab made no noise when he landed on the ground and quietly moved toward the main lab.
After days of scoping the place out, he knew all the lab's experimental data was on the main computer in this room.
And he'd been watching it for a day, making sure the computer hadn't been moved.
In other words, as long as he cracked the computer's password, he could finish his mission and snag the $5 million reward.
He, Ghosthawk, and Viperstrike were a team.
This mission was supposed to be a trio job, and the cash bonus was to be split equally.
But now, with Ghosthawk and Viperstrike dead, the $5 million was all his! He was pretty stoked.
To him, Ghosthawk and Viperstrike were just cannon fodder for tonight's mission.
Known as Nightshade, he was the stealth king in the Phantom Assassin Agency.
Plus, he was a master locksmith.
He used to be a legendary thief, robbing major jewelry exhibitors across the country. He'd gone off the grid after a warrant was issued for his arrest and had just recently resurfaced.
For this mission, the Phantom Assassin Agency had set up three people. The first two were to test the waters, and if they failed, it was Nightshade's turn.
Nightshade crouched stealthily in front of the main computer, glanced at the safe, and then pulled out a small laptop from his bag. After typing a string of characters, the laptop started decoding the safe's password.
His hand was already on the safe's combination lock, ready to open it and take the hard drive from the mainframe as soon as the decoding finished.
Even with high-tech tools, cracking the safe would take some time, but Nightshade was patient.
Just as he was about to unlock the first password, a hand silently landed on his shoulder.
In this pitch-black lab, he should've been the only one there, with only the faint beam of his flashlight lighting the area.
But the sudden grip on his shoulder sent a shiver down his spine and filled him with a bone-chilling fear that made him hold his breath.
Could this lab be haunted?
Nightshade was super confident in his stealth skills, thinking no one was better than him.
Plus, even while unlocking the password, he was always alert to his surroundings, listening for the slightest sounds.
He was sure he hadn't heard any footsteps, so how did this hand end up on his shoulder?
Nightshade furrowed his brows, without a moment's hesitation, swiftly drew a shiny dagger from his chest and stabbed it backward.
Whether it was a person or a ghost behind him, he couldn't afford to be careless; his life was on the line!
He didn't expect this stab to injure the opponent, as anyone who could silently appear behind him must be as skilled as he was.
So, his strike was just to create a chance to escape.
But to his surprise, his dagger didn't hit anything. Instead, his wrist was grabbed, like it was caught in a vice, unable to move.
Startled, he immediately pulled out another dagger and stabbed again.
But the result was the same as before.
Both of his hands were now firmly held by the opponent, unable to move an inch.
In the darkness, William exerted force with both hands, causing Nightshade to let out a painful scream. He couldn't hold onto the daggers anymore, which fell to the ground, reflecting a cold gleam.
"Who the hell are you? What do you want? If you're after the lab data too, maybe we can cut a deal!" Nightshade blurted out.
"You're about to bite the dust, and you wanna negotiate?" William scoffed and delivered a brutal, precise kick to Nightshade's head, causing it to buzz and his vision to go fuzzy.
Nightshade's world went dark, and he crumpled to the floor, clutching his head. It felt like all his strength just drained out of him in an instant.
He couldn't wrap his head around it—how could one kick leave him so dizzy and helpless?
It was unreal.
He was one of the top dogs in the organization, yet he couldn't handle a single move from this guy.
Seeing Nightshade sprawled out and not getting up, William didn't waste any more time on him. He walked over and flipped on the lab lights.
The whole lab lit up like a Christmas tree.
In the big, bright lab, it was just William and Nightshade.
Nightshade, still holding his head, lay there for a bit before he managed to sit up, staring at William with confused eyes.
The bright lights stung Nightshade's eyes, and he instinctively shielded his eyes. When he finally made out the figure in front of him, he shouted, "It's you."
"Looks like you know me?" William sneered.
"Yeah, I've seen you hanging around Mary a lot lately. Heard you're her useless husband. I'll give you $5 million, just let me go. Deal?" Nightshade said, his voice low.
As he talked, his hand was sneaking toward a dagger nearby.
When the dagger fell earlier, William hadn't bothered to kick it away.
"How have you seen me?" William asked, standing not far from Nightshade, acting like he didn't notice the sneaky move.
"You're quite the big shot at BK Pharmaceuticals, and this morning, I watched everything in the lab," Nightshade replied.
Like Ghosthawk and Viperstrike, he had snuck into the lab disguised as a researcher to get the job done.
These past days, he'd been keeping a close eye on the employees and execs at the company, noting the close relationship between William and Mary.
Plus, this morning's operation had flopped entirely because of William.
Even though Nightshade hadn't seen exactly how William had acted, he knew William was a serious threat, definitely as strong as himself.
Taking down Ghosthawk and Viperstrike so easily showed that William was no joke.
So, when Nightshade saw William in front of him, he knew his chances of getting out were slim.
If Ghosthawk and Viperstrike couldn't handle him, then he sure as hell couldn't either.
But he wasn't ready to give up. If he could escape, he could live.
So, he had to fight with everything he had to stay alive.
While talking, his hand had already reached the dagger. A faint, cold smile crept onto his lips as he said, "If you let me go, I can give you anything you want."
William's expression full of disdain as he sneered, "You? What can you give me that I want? What I truly want is to kill you. Can you give me that?"
William's words were so confident, they sent a shiver down Nightshade's spine, making him realize William had no plans to let him live.
Luckily, Nightshade kept his cool and adjusted his mindset.
"No, I can't, but I've got tons of priceless treasures in my stash—pink diamonds, antiques, famous paintings. I can give you anything you want. Each one's worth a fortune!" Nightshade said.
"Sounds tempting. Let me think about it," William said with a smile.
But just as William stroked his chin and pretended to ponder, Nightshade's hand, gripping the dagger, shot up. He lunged forward, aiming the cold blade at William's chest.
"Go to hell!" Nightshade shouted.
Seeing the dagger about to pierce William's chest, he laughed excitedly.
Meanwhile, Mary was at home, putting Sarah to bed, with a storybook by the pillow.
Suddenly, the phone on the bedside table lit up.
It was a text message from an unknown sender, with a simple message: [I'm Ellie Jones. Want to know William's secret? Come to 1998 Café. All your questions will be answered.]
