Chapter 244 Finally Meeting
Dylan smiled and said nothing more.
The two parted ways. Upon returning to the villa, Mary's mind lingered on Dylan's final words.
"The person I've always seen is still the one I know," Mary murmured.
William flashed through her mind. Was it him?
After recent events, Mary realized that William was becoming more enigmatic.
She thought, 'Who exactly is William. What is he hiding?'
Thinking about it, Mary opened her bag and took out the bank card William had given her before.
She decided to check the balance tomorrow.
She remembered there was something else.
After rummaging through her things, Mary finally found the gold card with "Miller" embossed on it that Jessica had given her.
It was said that as long as she had this card, she could find Jessica at any store in Lindwood City with the Miller sign.
Mary's mind was in turmoil. She trusted William, but recent events prompted her to verify things herself.
Especially Dylan's words tonight made her suspicious of William's identity.
It seemed that William was hiding a lot.
Moreover, Jessica was William's stepmother.
Jessica clearly wasn't just an ordinary restaurant owner.
"Mary, you're back," Margaret said.
At this moment, Margaret walked in with a cup of hot milk, smiling broadly.
"Mom, do you need something?" Mary tidied up and asked.
Margaret looked at the bank card and the gold card in Mary's hand, puzzled. So she asked, "What are you doing?" Mary smiled, put them away, and said, "Nothing. By the way, did you need something?"
Margaret didn't mind and said with a smile, "Mary, I have some good news for you."
Seeing Margaret's beaming smile, Mary smiled and asked, "Mom, what's the news that's making you so happy?"
Margaret said, "This villa now has your dad's and my names on it. From now on, our family of three will rightfully own this villa. William can no longer boss us around or order me around."
Margaret was very happy at the thought.
She was finally the owner of the villa, so she wouldn't have to act according to William's whims anymore.
These past few days, she was done pretending to be nice and obedient in front of William.
Moreover, in Margaret's mind, William had always been a useless person. Being told that William had bought the villa and was wealthy all of a sudden was hard for her to accept. Mary was very angry when she heard this and muttered, "Mom, what did you say to William this time?"
She knew Margaret had this idea, but she didn't expect her to actually pull it off.
"Hey, what's with your attitude? Did I do something wrong? I'm doing this for our family's security. Even if William is rich now, he's still the son-in-law of the Smith family, my son-in-law. He should listen to me. What's his is mine, is ours," Margaret said through gritted teeth, raising her eyebrows.
"You didn't say that before. You couldn't wait for me to divorce William. Now you recognize him as your son-in-law? Mom, you change your tune too quickly," Mary said, laughing sarcastically, her tone full of disdain.
Margaret got angry, twisted Mary's head, and scolded, "You're my daughter. Why are you always siding with outsiders? Even if I treated William badly before, wasn't it because he was a loser? He was so rich, why did he pretend to be poor in front of us?"
Mary didn't bother to respond to Margaret. Margaret only cared about money anyway.
Knowing that William was rich now, she still didn't restrain herself.
"Hey, Mary, do you think William is guarding against us? He's been staying with us for three years, acting all meek. Is it because he doesn't want us to use his money? I won't stand for that," Margaret said.
Then she shook her head vigorously and continued, "So that's his game, huh? Mary, you have to stand by me this time. Let me handle it. We have to get all his money. It's compensation for the three years he owes us."
"Mom, why have you become so unreasonable?" Mary asked, exasperated.
She was almost driven mad by Margaret. She remarked, "Before, when William had no money, you looked down on him, scolded him, hit him. Did he ever complain? Now that William has money, you still look down on him and want to take his money. Mom, have you lost your mind? What are you thinking all day?"
She thought helplessly, 'What's wrong with Margaret? She's becoming more and more unreliable.'
Furious, Margaret glared at Mary and scolded, "I've raised you for over twenty years, and you think I'm doing this for myself? I'm doing it for our family, for your future well-being!"
"Stop it. We all know who you're doing it for. I won't go along with you. William is my husband, and I trust him," Mary said firmly.
"Trust him?" Margaret sneered, full of sarcasm. She continued, "Mary, I'm telling you, you're really naive. Men change when they get money. Besides, William has been hiding things from us for three years. Do you know what he's been doing all this time? How do you know he doesn't have a mistress out there? What if he even has a child?"
Thinking about what she had caught at the hospital earlier, Margaret was furious.
She thought, 'William's definitely no good. No man is any good.'
Mary felt uncomfortable hearing this and retorted, "Mom, how can you think of William like that? Don't you know what kind of person he is?"
"What kind of person?" Margaret asked, rolling her eyes sarcastically.
Then she earnestly advised, "Mary, trust me on this. William is definitely a douchebag. You need to be prepared. For starters, you must secure this villa. That way, these three years won't be in vain. You've already had a child with him, and there's another one on the way. If he cheats on you and wants a divorce, what will you do then?"
"Mom, please leave. Can you stop talking nonsense?" Mary snapped.
She was really fed up with Margaret, who would say anything.
With that, Mary grabbed her clothes and went to the bathroom.
Margaret, left alone and fuming, sat in the bedroom and poured the milk into the trash can, muttering, "No one understands me!"
After a few more complaints, she left the room.
Half an hour later, Mary, wearing a trench coat, left the villa and drove to a store in Lindwood City.
Mary parked her car and entered the store with sunglasses and flowing wavy hair, exuding elegance.
It was an antique shop.
The shop owner came out, wearing gold-rimmed glasses, and looked Mary up and down. He said, "Hello, how can I help you?"
Without wasting any time, Mary took out the card Jessica had given her from her bag and handed it to the owner, saying, "I need to see her."
The owner initially didn't think much of the card, but when he saw the cloud pattern and the "Miller" embossed on the gold card, he panicked.
"This is... Please wait a moment!" the owner stammered.
He didn't dare to delay and hurried to the back of the shop, dialing a number. "A guest is here with a gold card, asking to see Ms. Miller."
"I understand," a voice came from the other end.
The call was quickly ended.
The owner returned to the main hall and asked Mary to wait for a moment.
Within five minutes, three black cars pulled up outside the shop, and several bodyguards in black suits got out and entered the store.
The lead bodyguard bowed slightly and respectfully addressed Mary, "Ms. Smith, please."
Mary was a bit stunned but followed them out of the store and got into the car.
The cars quickly drove into the night, crossing the river bridge and heading straight for Cloud Peak Manor.
Meanwhile, at Cloud Peak Manor, after talking with Nicholas, William returned to the hall.
Jessica, with a gentle smile, looked at the two and said, "I've had dinner prepared. Why don't you stay and eat?"
William coldly replied, "No, I have things to do."
With that, William turned to leave.
But Jessica smiled and said, "William, don't be in such a hurry. A guest is on her way, and I think you should meet them."
A guest?
William turned around, looking puzzled at Jessica, and noticed that her smile had a hint of something he couldn't quite decipher.
Her smile carried extreme gentleness yet a chilling undertone.
'What's Jessica planning?' William wondered.
At this moment, the three cars had already arrived at the gates of Cloud Peak Manor.
Mary got out of the car, stunned by the luxurious estate.
'Where is this place?' she wondered.
Following the maid, Mary cautiously walked towards the central villa.
"Ms. Smith, please wait a moment," the maid said with a slight smile.
The heavy door slowly opened, and William turned to look.
