Chapter 412 Jessica's Cruelty
In a flash, the atmosphere throughout the room grew tense.
Margaret's heart raced. More drugs?
"No way, I can't. William already busted me last time, I..." Margaret stuttered, shaking her head.
Jessica slapped her hard. Her icy stare cut through her shades, freezing Margaret in place. "You messed up last time. I let it slide. How dare you refuse now?"
Margaret clutched her cheek, head down, too scared to speak.
Jessica's vibe was just too intense.
One look from her and Margaret was shaking, sweating bullets.
Finally, Margaret caved, her voice barely a whisper, "What can I do for you?"
Jessica's voice was cold, "I need Mary to find out the baby's gender at the next checkup. If it's a boy, let her eat this."
Jessica's bodyguard handed Margaret a small box.
This was something Jessica couldn't do herself, nor could her subordinates.
Only Margaret could pull it off.
Margaret took the box, her hands trembling, "What's in here? Abortion pills?"
She knew what Jessica was up to. A boy would mess with the family inheritance.
Jessica wanted William to have no son.
She was so ruthless!
Jessica shook her head, "Don't ask futher questions. Just remember, if it's a boy, make Mary take it."
Margaret was terrified and torn, "What if William finds out?"
"Then you take it yourself," Jessica sneered.
With that, she strutted out and hopped into a custom Rolls-Royce waiting outside.
Zoe was at the door.
In the car, Zoe asked, "Madam, are you sure about this? If Mary takes that drug, her baby will be deformed and mentally disabled."
Jessica took off her shades, giving Zoe a sharp look, "Since when do you care about Mary?"
Zoe quickly bowed her head, "Madam, I was wrong."
"Let's go," Jessica said flatly.
The Rolls-Royce sped away from the Smith Family's old house.
Inside, Margaret sat on the sofa, staring at the small box on the coffee table.
It was open, showing a small round glass bottle with blue liquid inside.
There was an instruction manual, saying it just needed to be dissolved in water and given to the other person to drink.
Should she really do this?
Margaret's mind was a mess. Mary was her daughter, after all.
But thinking about what William had done to her just now, she was filled with anger.
Just then, Tyler came back.
Margaret quickly hid the stuff, looking guilty, "I'll go make dinner."
Tyler, confused, watched her head to the kitchen but said nothing.
The Sunshine Bay City Medical Association was the biggest deal in the southern coastal area.
It was a private gig. As it grew, it became a big name in the medical world.
Loads of pharma companies and drug makers were tied to it.
A company needed its stamp of approval to make or sell a drug. Its approval was like gold in the industry.
Big pharma companies teamed up with it for their products.
Any new drug it backed would be a market hit.
The building had forty floors.
Inside, it was all fancy, with people from all walks of life.
It was a typical domestic and foreign joint venture.
In the president's office of Celestia, the vice president of the medical association, Leander Fairchild, sat in front of the desk.
He was the guy who had beef with William last time, Maya's husband.
Maya was there too, sitting on Leander's lap, whining, "Honey, just do it. For me, okay?"
Leander threw up his hands, "Maya, BK Pharmaceuticals is one of the big players in Lindwood City, and they're about to drop a new drug that'll shake up the industry. I can't ban their drug over personal stuff. It's against my ethics."
"No way! I can't stand Mary. Just 'cause she's a chairman now, she was so smug that day," Maya snapped.
She got off Leander, fuming, "You have to help me with this, or I'll post evidence of your affairs with those women in the association to your work group!"
Leander's face turned red with anger, "Maya, you've been spying on me?"
Maya shrugged, "I can ignore you mess with another woman, but you gotta help me out here. Even just causing them some minor trouble would be enough. I can't stand Mary's smugness."
Leander was stuck; the thought of his private life getting exposed freaked him out. It'd mess up his gig as president at Celestia.
With no other option, Leander sighed, "Alright, I'll get the branch to pull their license."
Maya lit up, jumped on him, and kissed him, "You're the best, babe. Love you."
Leander, looking defeated, pushed her away and dialed the branch association's general manager in Lindwood City.
Soon, a voice dripping with respect came through, "Leander, what can I do for you?"
"I need you to revoke BK Pharmaceuticals' license," Leander said.
On the other end, a middle-aged guy with slicked-back hair lost his smile, confused, "Leander, they haven't done anything wrong. Isn't it a bit much to revoke their license?"
"Don't ask any questions. Just do it," Leander ordered.
He lowered his voice, "Keep this quiet. Got it? I need them to stop production for three months."
Sterling Hargreaves frowned. As the head of the Lindwood City branch, he knew how big BK Pharmaceuticals was for the city. Shutting them down for three months would be a disaster!
"Leander, what's going on? Should I talk to their chairman?" Sterling asked.
Leander quickly cut him off, "No need. Just follow orders."
With that, he hung up.
Sterling, being in his position, knew BK Pharmaceuticals must've pissed off Leander.
So, he made his move.
He quickly called his subordinate, "Revoke all licenses for BK Pharmaceuticals and tell them to stop production for three months."
Then, he grabbed another phone, dialed a number, and leaned back in his chair, grinning, "Caius, I need a favor."
A smooth voice, sounding like he was in his thirties or forties, replied, "What can I do for you? It's my pleasure."
Sterling chuckled, "Here's the deal. I'll provide you with some information, and you create some turmoil for BK Pharmaceuticals using it."
Since he was doing Leander a favor, he had to go all out.
Revoking the license wasn't enough; he wanted to drag BK Pharmaceuticals down.
His brother's company was also in pharma and had always been overshadowed by BK Pharmaceuticals.
This was his chance.
Caius Beaumont, on the other end, said confidently, "No problem. Send me the info, and I'll ensure it causes a big stir!"
"Great, $200,000 upfront, and $500,000 when it's done! I'll cover all the promo costs," Sterling laughed.
After hanging up, Sterling sat back, looking out the window with a sinister smile.
The Hargreaves family's time was coming.
Meanwhile, at the villa, Mary was playing with Sarah when her phone rang. It was Brenda.
Brenda sounded frantic, "Ms. Smith, we've got a problem! The medical association revoked our license and ordered us to stop production for three months. Our drugs are being returned, and the internet's full of negative comments. Partners are demanding compensation for breach of contract."
Brenda was almost in tears, rattling off the bad news.
Mary was stunned but tried to stay calm, "Don't panic. Have Evelyn stabilize the situation. I'll be at the office ASAP."
She hung up, grabbed her coat, and rushed out.
At the door, she bumped into William.
William saw her in a hurry and asked, "Mary, where are you going?"
"Something's up at the company," Mary said quickly and drove off.
William frowned, watching her speed away.
