Chapter 396 To Ask or Not to Ask

After a bit, William rolled up to Mary's office.

Even after the morning's drama, Mary was still her usual calm self. But William could tell something was off.

Her eyes were all over the place, like she was lost in space. She'd stare at a page for a long time without even flipping it.

This wasn't the Mary he knew. Something was definitely bugging her.

William plopped down across from her, watching her closely. "You're still hung up on this morning, aren't you?"

Mary shook her head, trying to play it cool.

"Don't pretend. I can see right through you," William said, finding her stubbornness kinda cute. She was clearly rattled but trying to act all calm.

'Why are you doing this to yourself, Mary?' William thought, feeling a bit helpless.

Mary wasn't like him; she needed time to process stuff.

"It's normal to feel weird. You'll get used to it," William said.

"Get used to it?" Mary shot back, frowning. She had no clue what he meant.

Was this gonna be a regular thing?

"Totally. Think about it, the cash from this new anti-cancer drug is insane. Tons of people are eyeing BK Pharmaceuticals. There are all kinds of sneaky folks out there. You think you can just chill? No way," William explained.

"How could this be..." Mary mumbled. If she'd known this, she might've thought twice about developing the new drug.

The idea of living under constant threats made her skin crawl.

"But don't sweat it. I got your back. You just run the company, and I'll handle the rest," William said confidently.

Mary looked at William and saw a glimmer of hope. "Thanks. How about I treat you to dinner?"

"Dinner?" William asked.

"Yeah," Mary replied.

"When?" William asked.

"Tomorrow night," Mary said.

William grinned, "Sure, sounds awesome."

He leaned back, crossed his legs, and started humming.

Mary shot him a look, "You're this happy?"

"Of course!" William said, all excited. "I'm happy you'll treat me to dinner."

Mary rolled her eyes, "Wipe the drool off your face."

William snapped to attention, "Oh, there's one more thing we gotta do."

"What is it?" Mary asked, frowning. She sensed something serious from his tone but couldn't put her finger on it.

"We still need to keep digging," William said, his playful vibe gone.

Mary remembered what William had said earlier.

This morning's scare showed the other side was ready and probably had a backup plan.

If those two hitmen were just a warm-up, there might be a third lurking around.

If this third person struck when BK Pharmaceuticals let its guard down, things could get ugly.

"Start now? If someone's hiding, wouldn't they have already bailed?" Mary asked, confused.

She checked the time; it was already four in the afternoon.

If William wanted to investigate, why didn't he start right after the morning mess instead of waiting?

"This is my strategy." William said.

He quickly explained, "Think about it. If we started right away, the hidden person might've stopped and split. But if we act like we're chill, they'll probably try again!"

"That makes sense, but what do we do?" Mary asked.

She frowned, "There are hundreds of employees. Investigating everyone will take forever. It's not a half-day job."

"Don't worry. With me here, it's all good. You just go home like usual," William said.

"And then?" Mary pressed.

"And then, I'll..."

As he talked, William got up and leaned in super close to Mary, his cheek almost brushing her ear.

"What the heck are you doing?" Mary snapped, totally thrown off by William's bold move.

It was so awkward that William was acting all up in her office.

"This is top-secret stuff, so I gotta get close. What if someone's listening in? We can't risk it," William said, dead serious.

Mary's face turned bright red, realizing she totally misunderstood, making her feel even more embarrassed.

William's mouth was so close to her ear that his warm breath felt like tiny ants crawling on her skin, making her giggle despite herself.

Listening to William, she nodded slightly.

Even though William was just a regular employee, he'd done so much for the company. Thinking about it, Mary felt a warm feeling spread through her.

William always showed up when she needed him, like her knight in shining armor.

Mary had no clue that William had already made up his mind to take down the Phantom Assassin Agency for good.

After work, William drove Mary back to her villa. The ride was super quiet, neither of them saying a word.

It wasn't until they pulled up to her place that William finally said, "For the next few days, don't go out unless you have to. Stay home, and Lucy will take care of you and Sarah."

Mary nodded, biting her lip like she wanted to say something but held back.

She'd been dying to ask about what Jeffery said at the office.

But those questions were tough to bring up, and she didn't want to push William away.

Seeing her uneasy look, William smiled and asked, "What's up? Got something to say?"

"No, just come back early. I'll be waiting for you," Mary said.

Then she gave him a quick kiss on the cheek and got out of the car.

William sat there, amused, watching her walk away.

Around eleven or twelve at night, the BK Pharmaceuticals building was dead quiet. The company had shut down early because of the emergencies that occurred during the day, and the lab doors were locked tight.

The whole main building was almost pitch black, with only the occasional flashlight beam as Quillon and a few team members did their rounds.

After the morning's scare, Quillon was extra cautious. He didn't want anything else to go wrong; otherwise, he might lose his job, forget about a raise.

So he decided to lead the patrols himself for the next few nights.

After checking the main building, he said, "Let's go check the lab."

He led the team to the underground lab entrance, inputting his fingerprint and password to open the door.

As soon as the door opened, the smell of blood hit them.

A day had passed, but the bloody smell in the lab hadn't gone away.

The smell reminded Quillon of the two bodies he'd dealt with earlier, sending a chill down his spine and almost making him puke.

In the dark, Quillon and his team stood at the lab door with flashlights, the smell of blood filling their noses, creating a creepy vibe.

Normally, he would've just shouted a few times and left. But tonight, he had to go in and check; otherwise, he wouldn't feel right.

"Check everything, every corner and cabinet!" Quillon ordered. After taking a deep breath, he stepped inside first and turned on the lab lights.

Once the lights were on, they felt a bit better.

The mess from earlier had been cleaned up; the broken glass was swept away, and the bloodstains were washed. But Quillon still felt like someone was watching him, making his back sweat!

After carefully checking around and confirming there were no issues, he sighed in relief and said, "Looks good. Let's go, make sure all doors and windows are locked. That should do it."

Taking one last look at the empty lab, Quillon finally closed the door.

After Quillon and his team departed, a figure silently descended from the ceiling into the pitch-black lab.

There was someone else in the lab!
